History of the Free Fringe

.......The one and only, truly free Fringe!.........

The Free Fringe began in 1996, founded by Peter Buckley Hill, with his show Peter Buckley Hill And Some Comedians.

Peter saw the Fringe as it then was: performers losing thousands of pounds, venues with four or five people in them, and complaints about high ticket prices. He saw that this was a vicious cycle. As costs to the performers rose, ticket prices rose. As ticket prices rose, fewer people went to shows and even fewer went to shows by artists they hadn't heard of. And this was bad for comedy; you can't make people laugh if there are only four of them, one in each corner of an otherwise empty room. And the more empty the audiences were, the more prices went up, to cover the rising costs of the venues. There seemed no escape from the cycle, and yet it was providing no opportunity for performers to rise through the ranks. The circle had to be cut.

Making the space free to performers would not be enough. The benefit had to be passed on to the consumer. Only thus could more people be attracted to see more shows.

The show that started the Free Fringe ‘Peter Buckley Hill And Some Comedians’ was the first of its kind. Peter paid a promoter for the space (there was no other option) and absorbed the loss. People called him mad. But audiences came. And came again. The bar broke all previous sales records.

In 1997 a different promoter attempted to force Peter to charge for admission. He resisted, and won. Peter Buckley Hill And Some Comedians II went ahead, and this time he didn't have to pay for the space. Indeed, it turned out that the promoter had not been charged for the space by the venue; she had sold the slots to her fellow artists and kept the money. The middleman was cut out, and the principle was established that increased drink sales were enough to satisfy the venue.

1998: PBHASC III became more established and increased its length to 1 1/2 hours. Name comedians played guest slots. But the pub manager left, and the area management didn't want the show to continue. A new venue had to be found. The experiment could have died at that point, but PBH was determined that it shouldn't.

After some searching, a new venue was found: the Three Quarter Sports Café on Grassmarket. This converted church had a wonderful performing room on two levels upstairs; this arrangement was marred only by the management's occasional cancellations of the shows to broadcast football and other sports on the big screen. It was in this venue that the first attempt to broaden the Free Fringe idea to more shows was made. The idea was to use weekday afternoons for a three-hour long rolling preview of any Fringe shows that wanted it, in 15-minute slots. This was an ambitious plan involving vast co-ordination between slots in the days before everybody had a mobile phone, and consequently suffered from occasional no-shows and dropouts. For these reasons, it didn't always succeed, but often it did, end the public took it in good part, often having lunch while watching the varied previews going past them. PBH bought an electric piano for this show; it was played twice. He still has it, and he still can't play it.

There were three years at the Three-Quarter; the public came in increasing numbers and name comedians played the shows. But the bar was closed and the venue sold, and yet another venue was needed. This was quite difficult to find.

Eventually, the Canon's Gait was approached. The then manager enthusiastically agreed to host PBH's two shows, but no more than that. Any expansion would have to wait for the future. In fact, the 2002 shows nearly did not take place, since that manager then left and the message about the shows was not passed on. Fortunately, the situation was rectified in time and PBHASC VII took place in the Canon's Gait. Smaller than the Three-Quarter, in nevertheless boasted a warm atmosphere and the audience flocked. After so much upheaval in the past, the Free Fringe had found a home and a place to expand in. Or so it seemed.

It was not to be. One of the numerous parasites who spoil the Fringe intervened. Declaring himself a comedy promoter, he persuaded the Canon's Gait's management that he could programme the space with better shows. PBH said he could do the same, but the management went with the 'promoter'. Who proceded to organise no shows whatsoever, having offered the space he was given free at £2000 per one-hour slot to performers. Meanwhile, no free venue was available to PBH and the cause seemed lost.

A chink of light showed through this darkness in June 2003, when the former manager of the Canon's Gait, Linsay Watts, telephoned PBH to say that she was now manager of a trade union club in Brunswick Street, and would PBH be interested in doing his show there? By that time the Fringe programme had long since gone to press, and PBH had made other arrangements for August. Driving to Edinburgh and back in the same day, he and his partner looked at the space offered, and though he could not change his arrangements, he promised to make something happen. A show called Some Comedians Without Peter Buckley Hill was put in place, and did well despite being in an unfamiliar building, in an otherwise Fringe-less part of Edinburgh, and having no entry in the programme. The enthusiasm of the organisers, and the loyalty of the audience PBH had built over the years, carried the day.

2004 saw the return of PBHASC VIII, and this time another opportunity to expand the Free Fringe, using extra space in the UCW Club. And it was then PBH made the biggest mistake in the whole saga of the Free Fringe. Seeking an easy source of variable-bill shows to complement his own two successful shows, he approached the Laughing Horse organisation. They put on a third variable-bill show and offered PBH a small sum to attach their name to the venue.

The shows went well. The formula worked. Now, after all the years, the opportunity to expand had finally arrived. For 2005 the Canon's Gait was brought back into play, so the Free Fringe had two venues. PBHASC IX went back to its third home, and a full raft of shows was booked for both venues. The booking was supposed to be a joint operation; instead, the Laughing Horse did it and presented PBH with a fait accompli. They also appended, without PBH's agreement, their name to the venues. Well, these were minor annoyances, and the important thing was that the shows went on. It was proven that the Free Fringe concept could work on a wider scale.

2006 saw a collaboration between PBH and the Laughing Horse organisation. This also saw the expansion on the Free Fringe. This worked exceptionally well, with full capacities seen at all venues, to the delight of both audiences and performers. However, behind the scenes the relationship between Laughing Horse and PBH was breaking down. There was a clear division between Laughing Horse’s commercial approach, and PBH’s collaborative not-for-profit ethos. The behaviour of the Laughing Horse organisation during this period was reprehensible, attempting to take control away from Free Fringe founder Peter Buckley Hill, even trying to ban him from his own venues and events.Much about these events has been written elsewhere on the internet.

Truth & Lies

In 2005 my collaboration with Laughing Horse left me suspicious of their motives, but the shows went ahead, and they were successful.

For 2006 I found two new venues, bringing the total to four. A second performance room was also opened at the UCW Club, bringing the number of spaces to five. The expansion could proceed. Shows were booked; again, behind my back (This also happened in 2005). Some of these booked shows promised to be good, and indeed were; others should never have been accepted. The good news was that the expansion worked; full audiences were seen at all venues, and they were happy. So were the performers.

It was on Thursday 24th August, ten minutes before my one man show started, that the Laughing Horse accosted me and informed me that they were taking over and that he was to consider himself sacked from the Free Fringe. I was also to consider myself dis-invited to the Free Fringe closing party.

I, Peter Buckley Hill, own both the name ‘Free Fringe’ and the majority of shares in The Free Fringe Ltd., so the position was ridiculous. Nevertheless, the Laughing Horse captured three of the four venues used in 2006 for the rival festival they intended to organise, and made a determined attempt to capture the fourth. Had they succeeded, free shows may well have taken place, but the ideals and ethos of the Free Fringe would have died at that point. The concept of performers operating collectively would have been replaced by performers working for a promoter; no effective change to the status quo ante. The interests of promoters and performers can never be identical.

Once more, I had to fight for my invention. This time, I blame myself for involving the Laughing Horse in the first place, and not placing curbs on their activities sooner. But with the enormous help of supporters and those who believe in the true ideals of the Free Fringe, new and better venues were found. Performers will go back to acting as a collective and co-operating with each other, as was the original plan.

And this brings us to the present day. The Free Fringe has seven venues, with good performers doing all sorts of shows. We have even taken on some plays and other types of show. The Free Fringe concept shouldn't be limited to comedy; we can help other art forms also to do the Fringe at a reasonable cost.

We're still under threat; the rival "Free Festival", formed specifically to undermine the Free Fringe, will confuse the public. The Laughing Horse, who registered the domain freefringe.co.uk on behalf of the Free Fringe, are refusing to relinquish it, and it points to their web site.  But we've fought off threats before; we're standing up to the bullies, because we believe in what we're doing. It's a good deal for performers, public and venue owners alike. Please support us.

Peter Buckley Hill and Some Comedians - Free

The man who wants to set the Fringe free

KATE COPSTICK

THERE is a revolution gathering strength in Edinburgh this August. And when next year comes around we could well see the biggest change to the face of the Fringe since William Burdett-Coutts established the Assembly Rooms and created what has almost become a class system within it.

Over the years the price of hiring a venue has risen and tales of well-known comics coming up to the Big Three Venues, selling out their run and still going home with a four-figure debt abound. One of the main topics of conversation is the mounting costs of venue hire, PR hire, Fringe entry, accommodation, posters, flyers and the whole nine yards. No-one ever hears of any performer who makes a profit.

Audiences increasingly complain about ticket prices and bar tariffs. They also feel - if my eavesdroppings have been representative - disappointed that they don't get value for money. It is a year-on-year source of rancour. Many of Edinburgh's best-known names have, this year, decamped to Tommy Sheppard's Stand Comedy Club. There they get the kind of deal that performers at other venues dream about.

They play to small houses, the toilets are grim and their audiences have to wait outside because the space is so small, but they have a ball and they go home with a few quid. From an audience point of view, ticket prices at The Stand are pretty reasonable, especially considering the quality of acts on down there. All this is, of course, possible because The Stand is here all year round. It is tougher if you have to gear up only for August.

But all across Edinburgh, just for August, in pubs from Bruntsfield to Leith, something really very exciting is happening. The Free Fringe is an inspirational example of what can be done with a dream, determination and a lot of wholehearted cooperation.

In five separate venues, around 69 comedy performers are posting House Full signs. Happy punters are pouring out on to the street, pausing only to check out the leaflets advertising other Free Fringe acts. And the Free Fringe does exactly what it says on the label. The performers do not pay a thing for the venues and the public are not charged for the shows. The venues are happy to take the increased trade and it really works. It is a win-win situation. There is such a thing as a free lunch. Metaphorically speaking, anyway.

Established names like Steve Day and Andrew J Lederer have quit their mainstream venues and are delightedly playing to capacity houses under The Laughing Horse banner in Lindsay's in Brunswick Street and The Canon's Gait on Canongate respectively. I have seen five or six shows in Free Fringe venues and not one dud among them.

In fact, one of precious few five-star reviews I have given this year went to the unbelievably brilliant Martha McBrier, whose show goes on down in Leith at Lindsay's. The night I was there, I took my beer out into the garden and watched 20 comics sit under an awning, kicking back, having a normally priced beer and a smoke and a really good time with their peer group. It reminded me of something we used to have... oh yes, I remember... The Fringe.

The Free Fringe is the brainchild of Peter Buckley Hill, Edinburgh legend and long-time eccentric. In 1996 he brought just his own show and gave it away. Now he is giving away 69 shows. "People thought I was mad," he says. "Why charge nothing for admission when you could charge something? There's an easy answer: if you make it easy for people to come, they will. If you make it easy for people to try something they haven't heard of, they will. And if they don't like it - and however good or famous you are, there's always someone who doesn't like it - they don't feel resentment at having been ripped off. Because they haven't been."

Hill is intensely passionate about getting performers a fair deal. This is not just a guy bringing a bunch of shows up to Edinburgh, this is something close to a sociopolitical movement. Performers are expected to help each other with their shows, there is no real central organisation, there are no charges, hidden or otherwise. "Maybe 2 per cent of comedians make a profit in the Fringe. The rest make a loss. And it's their own money they lose, often five-figure sums. At the Free Fringe, the most you can lose is your Fringe fee and your accommodation."

After each show there is a bucket at the door that you can put some money in - or not. The odd thing is that the Free Fringe shows I have reviewed are the only ones I have ended up actually paying for, such has been the quality of the shows - because I wanted to.

You should take in some Free Fringe shows. What do you have to lose? The worst that can happen is you don't like the show. But at least here you can walk out without thinking: "Crikey, there goes £12." And you can experiment, see someone you've never heard of. Discover your own new favourite comics.

Remember when we all used to do that? As Hill says: "This is more like what a Fringe should be. There's no point having a Fringe Festival in which people only go to see acts who are already popular. That would be a mainstream festival, not a Fringe.

"At a Fringe people should be able to take risks. With the Free Fringe, they can."

Were I bringing a comedy show to Edinburgh next year, I would be giving three weeks on the Free Fringe some very serious thought. Over the years there have been many attempts at taking the Fringe back to its roots - giving the Fringe a Fringe. None has worked.

The comedy section of the brochure has come to dominate, and the Fringe increasingly looks like a trade fair. It is right that the people spearheading the best chance the Fringe has ever had to become a real Fringe again, are comics. The Fringe is dead, long live the Fringe.

• Free Fringe shows can be seen at the following venues: Laughing Horse @ Canon's Gait (Venue 78); Laughing Horse @ Jekyll & Hyde (Venue 259); Laughing Horse @ Lindsay's (venue 56) and Laughing Horse @ Meadow Bar (venue 264).

Brian & Krysstal's Pick 'n' Mix + Pear Shaped Afternoons
Brian & Krysstal
Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. Brian Damage and Krysstal are a unique comedy duo performing all around the UK and London Comedy Circuits. They have been regulars at the Edinburgh Festival since they met there in 2000.

This year they’ve decided to do a show of pure unadulterated silliness. No guests, no themes, just Brian & Krysstal doing what they do best – having fun. With the spin of a home-made wheel, the audience get to Pick ‘n’ Mix from old and new songs, jokes and characters within the categories of “Old, New, Borrowed or Blue”. Thus the show will be different every night as the duo draw on their vast bank of silliness.

Characters making an appearance are Madge and Monty, the Two Biddies, The Arthurs, The Grumpies, Mucky Finger Gardeners, Terri the Sheep Shearer and a few we haven’t met yet.

Brian & Krysstal’s Pick & Mix + Pear Shaped Afternoons
TWO SHOWS FOR THE PRICE OF NONE!

Due to venue closures and problems we are combining both our shows "Brian & Krysstal's Pick & Mix" and "Pear Shaped Afternoons" at The White Horse Bar, Canongate. VENUE 296.

The show starts at 3 15pm until 5pm and believe it or not is absolutely free! (but don’t let that stop you chucking a few quid in the love-bucket on the way out if you enjoy the show) Warning: This show contains language, music and the occasional sex scene.

Please don’t bring the kids unless you want them to learn some new words.

We are delighted to be part of PBH’s Free Fringe

……………………………….

Don't come to see us at Madogs – we won’t be there. We are very grateful to them for coming to our rescue when The Ivanhoe closed down at the last minute, but sadly the place is not very comedy friendly (it’s mildly disturbing to see somebody actually trying to dance to your jokes.) Extremely nice management - it's not their fault.

The White Horse Bar on the other hand is a great room for comedy very nice audiences and actually has it’s own ghost. By the time we’ve finished – there will be hundred’s of ‘em!

So if you really do want to see us in Edinburgh - come to the White Horse Bar 266 Canongate [VENUE 296] every afternoon (not 20th) at 3 15pm to 5pm until the end of August.

IF not COMedians
Nick Hodder / Rob Alderson / Tom Greeves
Three dashing young comics giving their intelligent brand of humour away for free. Arguably they're not dashing, and one isn't young. But they are up and coming, and they promise they're not worthy or earnest.

The line-up includes BBC award winning comedy writer Nick Hodder, former Tory speech writer Tom Greeves, and ‘Laughing Horse’ finalist Rob Alderson.

These lads are fresh faces on the comedy circuit, yet they have had quite an impact on the grass roots comedy scene. This is their first Edinburgh, and this free show provides an opportunity to see three of the best up and coming comedians, for absolutely nothing.

Little Love Affairs/The 'F' Show
Keara Murphy
KEARA MURPHY: LITTLE LOVE AFFAIRS
Expressive character comedy from one of Scotland's finest comics: A character-based stand-up show based on the lives of four women who were born on the same day, in the same hospital, in Glasgow. Now in their early forties their lives have taken very different turns however, they share one thing: none of them has been able to find true love. The women have never met, apart from lying side-by-side in incubators as babies and now, when they come together during Denise Robinson’s phone-in section on This Morning.

Told through a set of comedy monologues, voice-over, music and song, the ladies catastrophic lives are exposed: Stacey Broon is a bitter pub landlady and sadistic husband beater; Madeleine Morningstar is a failed Vegas stripper; Lady B is the racist and deluded president of a decaying tennis club and Grainia O’Grady is an ungainly and gullible Irish nurse.

THIS SHOW MAY SAVE YOUR LIFE!
(But it probably won't)

Men with Bananas offer you another hour of high energy buffoonery as they attempt to save the planet (and themselves...) from...BANANAGEDDON!

Bananas are the Uk's favourite fruit. 80% of UK households buy bananas every week. An unstoppable virus is currently decimating banana plantations around the world. According to current predictions the common banana will become extinct within 10 years.

Men are UK womens' favourite method of fertilisation. 88% of UK females prefer to sleep with men. However, due to a defective and rapidly deteriorating Y chromosome, men are expected to become extinct by the year 2270.

But let's put this into perspective. We probably won't last that long.

Information for Performers

We're pleased to announce that the Free Fringe has these venues available for shows in 2007, and may yet have more.

VENUE A is the Canon’s Gait. This highly successful venue will continue to feature as the flagship for the Free Fringe. PBH And Some Comedians will happen here, as will my one-man show.

VENUE B is the White Horse, Canongate. This is very close to the Canon’s Gait, with easy access. It is a 50-seater function room attached to a pub but with a separate entrance which will be opened for the Fringe. It is a good rectangular space with character, and has not been used as a Fringe venue before.

VENUE C is the Outhouse, Broughton Street Lane. This is very close to Picardy Place and less than five minutes from The Stand. It is a wonderful bright and newly-furnished rectangular room, capable of holding 60, above a modern bar with a beer garden which has a substantial clientele of its own. This is a busy and lively part of town.

VENUE D is the Phoenix, Broughton Street, two minutes’ walk from The Outhouse. It is in a popular pub; a basement space with its own entrance. It has its own small bar, or drinks may also be got from upstairs. The stage be at the opposite end from the street entrance; the bar curves into the room slightly and there are some crannies, but it has a nice atmosphere and is conducive to good shows. Broughton Street is lively and well known to Edinburgh residents. There are many gay venues in the area, but it is by no means a ‘gay ghetto’ and the pub welcomes all orientations.

VENUE E is the Mercat Bar, West Maitland Street, EH12, near Haymarket Station, on the main road to Princes Street. This is an area of Edinburgh that has not previously been used for Fringe events, but is absolutely right for them. Edinburgh residents regard this as central, and there are many hotels in the area which will accommodate fringegoers. The bar itself is wonderful and the management enthusiastic. We will use the basement, reachable by a staircase from the main bar. This is a good performance space holding 80 and an opportunity to spread the geographic reach of the Free Fringe.

VENUE F is the Ivanhoe, South St David St. It is just off Princes Street, opposite the Scott Monument and opposite Jenner's. It's a 50 seater basement room well located and comfortable, a minute from the Café Royal. This is a very busy part of town and very easy to get to; the room will work well for comedy.

VENUE G is the Hudson Club in the Hudson Hotel. It is on Hope Street in the West End, just off Princes Street, and is downstairs in a new boutique hotel. The bar occupies the centre of the room with spaces at either end; we will concentrate the seating at one end and deploy the 30 or so seats there around the stage. There is room for many more standing. You can see various shots on http://www.thehudsonhotel.co.uk/club.htmlooking at the slide show at the top. I will upload when I get the chance. We have this room up to 7pm, after which it reverts to the hotel/bar/nightclub that it is for the rest of the year.
Now
If you want to do a show at the Free Fringe, now is the time to register your interest. This is the deal:  All venues will be free of charge to the performer. All performers' shows must be free of charge to the public. Collections are acceptable; excessive bottling is not. All shows must at their own expense take a regular entry in the Fringe Programme.  All shows must in their Fringe Programme entry have the phrase ‘PBH’s Free Fringe’ as all or part of their group name.  All shows will be listed in the Free Fringe leaflet/programme free of charge. All performers are expected to help with the Free Fringe and to co-operate with other Free Fringers, in ways including but not limited to the following:
1. Giving out the Free Fringe Leaflet alongside shows' own leaflets;
2. Helping the show before by controlling the crowd (i.e. holding back your audience until the audience for the previous show has cleared);
3. If asked to, holding the collection bucket for the previous show;
4. Ensuring that your show finishes on time (no matter when it has started);
5. Ensuring that your audience clears the venue, unless they're staying for the next show;
6. If performing in the first week, rigging the venue on Friday 3rd August;
7. If performing in the last week, de-rigging and tidying the venue on Sunday 26th August;
8. Lending to the Free Fringe such useful equipment as they might own, such as mics, mic stands, leads, cables, amplifiers, CD players, extension power cables, spotlights, lighting stands and gaffa tape;
9. Putting at the disposal of the Free Fringe such expertise as they might possess, such as advertising sales, web design etc;
10. Not being the sort of person who is obsessed with his/her own success to the exclusion and annoyance of his/her fellow artists.  All venues will be simply rigged and have no technical staff. Shows with lighting cues or complex technical requirements will not be suitable for the venues. There will be a stage, mics and a CD player. Any more complicated requirements should be agreed well in advance, and used in such a way that they can be easily rigged before the show and de-rigged afterwards with no inconvenience to the shows before and after. The costs of the Free Fringe to the performer are therefore limited to programme entry fee and accommodation, plus whatever publicity the performer deems necessary. Any collection is managed by the performer him/herself and goes straight to the performer him/herself without any check or deduction. This is in contrast to other venues where there may be usage charges and other fees for central services provided by the venue. It is possible to break even on a Free Fringe show. The number of posters to be printed is up to each show, but it is suggested that a low number is needed, for display in and near the venue. Similarly, the number of leaflets needed may be low, since the Free Fringe leaflet will be distributed by all acts. 5000 is a suggested maximum number of individual leaflets needed. Thus, expense is also saved. Interested performers/shows should provide details of their suggested show to PBH by email. Details of any upcoming London gigs may also help.  The Free Fringe hopes to accommodate all sorts of shows. Within that, there is an approximate priority order of desirability:

1. variable bill shows
2. sketch shows (but not requiring staging or teching)
3. three-and four-handers
4. one-man shows from experienced performers
5. first one-man shows at Edinburgh, varied
6. first one-man shows at Edinburgh, single talking head
7. Known non-team players and assorted arseholes.

Performers new to the Fringe are advised to expect a much broader audience than the average comedy club, and usually a nicer one. Picking on individuals in the audience, unless they start it or unless it is done in a supportive and non-humiliating way, is discouraged. Remember: your show is an advertisement for others at the Free Fringe. People new to the Fringe are strongly advised to perform within their limits and not to do a one-hour solo show unless they have seen the standard required. Such performers are best advised to get together with others and create a three-, four- or five-handed compilation show. These shows are more popular with the public and provide good peer support in a festival which can break performers as well as make them.  The Free Fringe no longer has any association with the Laughing Horse organisation. It will henceforth be run as a co-operative of performers, directed by PBH. In formal terms, the Free Fringe Ltd is registered in the UK, directors PBH and Melanie Hill-Stephens. All offers of help welcome. We need screen printers, Public Relations experts (no fee) and others.  I am also particularly interested in hearing from people willing to book and run variable-bill shows in some of the venues. Such shows are usually well received and attended, which will keep the venue owners happy with the takings. They also provide performance opportunities for people who don’t have a full Fringe show, thus helping the next generation. Truth and Lies

In2005 my collaboration with Laughing Horse left me suspicious of their motives, but the shows went ahead, and they were successful.

Doubt Us productions
started their company and show because they were tired of conventional stand-up.
They wanted to do something unique and different from what seemed to be the norm at comedy clubs.
"Beat Off" Dirty Yanks
is the first installment in a run of completely original character comedy shows.
The show is a fresh and completely original alternative to most stand-up shows.
"Beat Off" Dirty Yanks
doesn't really contain well written jokes with witty punch-lines. The show doesn't focus on the joke but more on the chance to meet unique characters who happen to be funny people.

 "Beat Off" Dirty Yanks
deputed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival '07 and has been leaving audiences perplexed,
half cheering in hysterics and half with dropped jaws.
DoubtUS Productions is a fresh, completely original alternative to your average stand-up show.
DoubtUS hopes to redefine the comedy experience by claiming "Death to Stand-up!"

Here is a brief overview of the people behind the Doubt US crew.

Tim Schwartz:
A true traveler at heart, Tim has spent the better half of three years traveling the world as a means to ease
his old soul. Tim is a man, full of passion, he spent his last summer as a volunteer in a Bulgarian orphanage.
He has always had knack for comedy and began a career last fall as a stand-up in
Los Angeles. Quickly picking up his bags he moved to London and advanced his career in a scene full of conventional stand-up comedians.
He is a true believer in karma and feels the world is unjust and un communal. His spirit is strong and therefore keeps a strong support system around him. His dream is what started the DoubtUS team,
therefore he brought his friends with him, those that he enjoys their company and admires their work.
While on his travels, Tim has studied different forms of performance art. He has studied improvisation at the
The Groundlings theatre in
Los Angeles. He has studied dramatic acting in London at CityLite
Theatre and has performed comedy throughout
London and Los Angeles.

Ty Twiss:

Working at a youth hostels in Los Angeles is where Ty first met Tim. Becoming friends quickly after finding themselves having similar views of the world, the two jokers took on peoples perceptions of reality with
obscure antics and stylish personas. Tyler moved to Central America though, but after months of life in the
sand Tyler and Tim met again in
London. While Tim worked on his act with the help of the young stallion,
Ty squated in Shoreditch running a speak easy to make ends meet. He also was a part of a co-op
which ran a vegan cafe in the urban area of Hackney. For months Tim and Tyler worked along side each
other, creating experimental comedy in clubs throughout
London. As time progressed they decided
upon the idea of forming a company to be perceived as professionals.
DoubtUS Productions was then born, and Ty and Tim began to formulate outlandish ideas for a
comedy scheme. The path has now begun to be forged, all that is left is to take the
first step towards success.

Ronald Prouty:

Ron is shrouded in spirituality and personal growth. A regular practitioner of transcendental mediation,
he finds an outlet for his bizarre and outlandish behavior on stage. Ron has a talent for combing
quick-wit with wild physical humor. Ron's favorite outlet is comedy, he finds everything to be comical and
enjoys bizarre and outlandish forms of expression. Alone in
Los Angeles while Ty an Tim we're in London,
Ron developed his own unique and outrageous characters. He showcased his talents in clubs throughout
Los Angeles and brought his audiences on rollercoaster rides. Ron met up with Tim and Ty in London to begin DoubtUS Productions. He enjoys his spirituality as well as being an eccentric and rather intriguing individual. An avid surfer, Ron feels most happy while at the beach or on stage. Ron has studied improvisation at both The Groundlings and The Second City Studio theatre in Los Angeles. He has been a regular performer in
over 6 improvising groups and has performed in comedy clubs all over the greater Los Angeles area.

THE RACKET -

A Living For Today Production-Directed by Anna Barry and Andrew Neil

A tale of two men, one beautiful idealist, one dead general...
Oh and one bloody war.
Click here for video video clip of
The Racket

A political drama of two lives affected by war -
told with humour and pathos.

Who runs the RACKET?

Simon Brook

The world is a crazy place and Baghdad is its burning centre. Simon Brook's job is to write some sense into it all. And he's ok with that, providing there is a ready supply of whiskey. But what happens when this jaded old journalist falls in love with a beautiful young idealist?

Kenny Yates

Meanwhile Kenny Yates is on a mission. With nothing more than a back-pack and his very own live tour Kenny is ready to tell the world about one of its greatest heroes.

Part drama part stand up, Simon and Kenny's stories intertwine twisting their way through laughter and tears, love and hate, loss and hope. And behind it all a bloody and terrible war.

Richard Walker- Writer and Performer

Richard Walker trained at The Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art and since then has appeared in theatres throughout Great Britain. He has also made more than a hundred appearances on television.

The Cambridge University ADC presents the World Premiere of
APOCRYPHAL TALES TOLD IN THE DARK
A New Play by Orlando Reade.

World Premiere and Press Night – Thursday 27 August 2007, 7pm.
C Cubed (Venue 50), Brodie’s Close, Lawnmarket, Edinburgh.

Attempt 3.4- Present Attempt....
FOUR CITY TOWN PLANNERS OF THE APOCALYPSE DRAWN THE BlUE PRINT AND BULD THE CITY IN 60 MINUTES

ON AT C3 50
Brodie's close LAWN MARKET
9.45pm (1hr.05)
Attempt 3.4 unfolds a map of the city...which city we are not quite sure.... they seem to build a different city each night.....
Four people... lost.,,, coloured light bulbs illuminate their search for each other as they travel the grid of the city.
Sometimes they meet,
sometimes they just brush shoulders,
sometimes they just slip through the web,
but instead of loss, they discover the pleasure of falling......

A play that is clever, zany and sometimes absolutely madness.. which grips all the way as the actors take you into their city building world..
you will never ever see a city built like this again.......
This play stands on its own with a free form script that is written by the actors which is constantly changing and moving and is set to be a world wide hit in all countries through the world with the actors and thge play developing into almost cult status which would see this play runs for years through the world.. an every cahnging world...as the city they build each night is every changing.... a play that you could see time and time again as it is gripping...changing and evolves, never the same......

Another special play that well deserves USA WEEKLY NEWS 100 star rating award...

Apocryphal Tales Told in the Dark
Six Bible stories, no longer timeless, become twisted in the context of a modern dystopian London. Apocryphal Tales is a challenging new work exploring the timelessness of love and loss in a broken society.
An underworld of drug dealing delinquents, recovering alcoholics and a lone female tramp clashes with a deeply middle class married couple in crisis. Whilst faithful to the original Biblical dilemmas the stories prove that although the questions remain the same, the answers change. Orlando Reade has thoughtfully created a beautiful
work with a wide appeal. Picked up by the renowned Cambridge University Amateur Dramatic Club – a stalwart of the Fringe for the past two decades –
the show premieres on Thursday 2nd August at C Venues (C Cubed - Venue 50), Brodie’s Close, off Royal Mile.
