Is Guilty Of Punching Horse
Wednesday February 28,
A jockey has been found guilty of punching his horse in the head in a temper tantrum after losing a race. Lodewijk De Smet, one of the world's leading equestrians, yanked hard on the reins and galloped towards horrified spectators and children after hitting the animal. The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons said De Smet - who is also a vet - was guilty of using unjustifiable force against his horse. It now has to decide whether the punch amounts to disgraceful conduct before making any (Advertisement) sanction. De Smet could be suspended or even struck off from his profession. The Austrian vet had been competing in a relay race with his wife for the Banwen Miners Hunt. But De Smet became angry after losing to a group of youngsters on the opposition team, the Celtic Blood Hounds. He began his tantrum as soon as he crossed the finish line. Diane James, the master of the rival team, told the hearing: "My view was that he was embarrassed to be beaten by a group of youngsters." The event's commentator and organiser Christine Chambers said she heard De Smet swear at least six times. Members of the panel had watched a video recording of the race in Brecon during the three-day hearing in central London. De Smet, of Ammanford, Camarthenshire, told the hearing he had never been criticised for his conduct and had never hit his horse. Biut he added that he was embarrassed and "very, very sorry" he had lost his temper

Greater Israel --
What Does It Really Mean?
2003 - 2005
(NOTE: This web page was first created in early 2003 at the start of the US-led war on Iraq. A few additions have been made [and are marked as such] that provide new material in 2004 or refer to then 2003-present events as past. Please note that the material as it was first posted in 2003 clearly stated that other nations besides Iraq would soon be on the attack list as shown on our Uncle Sam poster next. And that this wider war instigated by the Neo-Conservatives in the Bush administration was primarily on behalf of the interests of Israel.)
The U.S. led war on Iraq... and eventually many other Muslim nations may be part of an Israeli plan to let others die for the goal of its expansion into Greater Israel. Extremist Zionist sympathizers in Bush's administration are the perpetrators of this scheme to have American military men and women die for Israel. See the arguments below for this claim.
Are Arabs and other Muslims really "crazy"
to believe that the War on Iraq may be part of
an Israeli and American "Zionist" plot to
dominate the entire Middle East?
KING SAUD INTERVIEW BY LILIENTHAL
ON ARAB-AMERICAN RELATIONS
AND ZIONISM
The Federal Herald
October 1954
From middle column of second page below:
Mr.
Lilienthal: …Your Majesty a few months ago… said that the Arabs do not
care if they sacrifice a few million persons in order to put an end to
the Zionists in Palestine.
His
Majesty then said: Frankly what I said is what I urge and preach. It is
the only answer to what has been published by the responsible persons
of Israel about the necessity that Israel should expand to comprise the
beds of the Tigris and Euphrates, the Sinai Peninsula and the northern
part of Saudi Arabia, including Medina, which is one of the two Holy
Towns and the Burial place of the Moslems’ Prophet, and which is after
all my own land and the land of every Arab and Moslem. We have learned
of this Zionist ambition from the statements of Israeli leaders and its
creators who pleaded the course yesterday, and are still pleading it
today. They are making no secret of this scheme, and they have made its
study part of the school curriculum in Israel, where they cram the
students’ heads with these fanciful schemes. There is no answer to what
they are after except this antidote, and the preparation of what we can
in field of might and force.

This 1954 quote from King Saud provides an important insight that Americans and other Westerners rarely hear about as to why the Arabs, in the early days of Israel in the late 1940s and early 1950s, made fierce statements about the need for "driving the Jews back into the sea."
Fifty years later, another (very infamous) Arab professes the same view that Israel intends to rule all the territory from the Nile to the Euphrates.
Do Americans realize that many Arab-Muslims believe they are defending their own lands and existence -- and not just that of the Palestinian Arabs?
Would we see it as only mindless Bin Laden style "terror" -- if there was any basis for their claim to need to defend themselves against American and Israeli plans to conquer the entire Middle East and subdue all Muslims?

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) -- An audiotape purportedly from Osama bin Laden calls President Bush "stupid" and claims American war plans against Iraq are part of a plot to attack Muslim nations in the Middle East and North Africa.
The tape appeared to be the same 53-minute recording of which a few excerpts were released Thursday by the British-based Islamic Al-Ansaar news agency. It began appearing in full Sunday on Islamic-oriented Web sites. Al-Ansaar had said it acquired the tape from a seller who advertised it over the Internet.
The United States' goal in waging war against Iraq is to change the regional map to benefit Israel, according to the raspy voice said to belong to bin Laden.
"It is clear that the preparations to attack Iraq are part of a series of attacks prepared for nations of the region including Syria, Iran, Egypt and Sudan,"the voice said.
"The aim of the Crusaders' campaign is to prepare the atmosphere for the establishment of the so-called greater Israel state, which includes great parts of Iraq, Egypt, Syria, Jordan and large portions of (Saudi Arabia),"it said.
DUBAI, Feb 16 (Reuters) - An Islamist website broadcast an audio tape purported to be the voice of Osama bin Laden telling Muslims to fight against the "enemy" United States and saying holy war was the only way to win Muslim rights.
If authenticated, the recording broadcast by the Jihad Forum site would be the latest proof that bin Laden had escaped the 2001 U.S.-led military campaign to flush him and his al Qaeda operatives from Afghanistan.
The voice on the tape was very clear and sounded like previous audio and video recordings allegedly made by bin Laden.
"Regarding this Zionist Crusader war on the nation of Islam,it is the duty of Muslims to fight for the sake of God and to incite the faithful to fight the infidels," the speaker said.
U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said there had been some speculation about a second tape swirling around within the intelligence community for the past couple of days.
"Obviously we haven't authenticated it. But again, the message is consistent. The values of the West are anathema to these people," he told the ABC "This Week" program.
"If you don't believe, you're an infidel, and they're going to do everything they can to undermine the United States as the primary target...," he said.
Jihad Forum said the new message was made on the occasion of the three-day Muslim Eid al-Adha feast, which this year coincided with the threat of a looming U.S. war on Iraq and heightened anti-American sentiment in many Arab countries.
"It is the utmost duty to fight the enemy that sabotages the world. The only way to deal a decisive blow in the conflict with the enemy is through killing and fighting," the recording said.
The Saudi-owned Al Hayat newspaper first published excerpts of the recording, which they said could be found on the Islamist "Jihad Forum" site hosted by the www.arabforum.net website.
It follows another tape broadcast last week by Qatar's al Jazeera television in which the Saudi-born militant called on Muslims to stage suicide attacks to prevent a U.S. war on Iraq.
Jazeera, which normally obtains bin Laden's tapes, aired the latest 53-minute tape retrieved from the Internet over a picture of bin Laden in camouflage with a rifle by his side.
Both recordings coincide with a state of high alert in the United States and its ally Britain. They said they had concrete information that al Qaeda was planning a slew of attacks.
Attacks have in the past followed messages by bin Laden, and recent tapes by him have heightened fears of an imminent strike.
WAR TO CREATE "GREATER ISRAEL"
Bin Laden said an attack on Iraq would be followed by U.S. "aggressions" against more Arab countries such as Egypt, Sudan, Iran and Syria for the benefit of its ally Israel.
"This attack on Iraq is part of a new crusade to prepare the region, after dividing it, for the creation of a Greater Israel. This means the whole region will be ruled by Jews,"he said.
The recording began with bin Laden identifying the United States and its "foolish" President George W. Bush as the enemy.
It said Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair wanted to carve up the Middle East like a 1916 British-French pact that divided up the territory of the Ottoman Empire.
"The United States' goal to divide the Middle East is not just a passing fancy," the al Qaeda leader said. "The only way to defeat the infidels is through Holy War.
"Oh Muslims, do not fear America because we have defeated them repeatedly and they are the most cowardly of people when you meet them face to face," he declared.
He lauded wars Muslims had fought and won against "Western Crusaders" throughout history and recounted the times militants -- some from his al Qaeda group -- had bombed U.S. and Western targets in Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Somalia, Kenya and Tanzania.
He also praised the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington, which the United States accuses him of planning, saying they "exposed the ugly face of America and revealed the reality of the conflict between Crusaders and Muslims."
"At a time of great depression for Muslims, when the Zionist American alliance was killing our sons...a group of youth hijacked enemy planes in a beautiful, courageous attack.
"They destroyed the idols of America...They rubbed America's nose in the dirt and wiped its pride in the mud. They destroyed the Twin Towers of New York and with that the legend of America, the superpower."
Bin Laden lambasted America's Arab allies, singling out Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah for his peace initiative last year in which Arabs offered Israel full ties in return for withdrawal from Arab land occupied in the 1967 Middle East War.

NOTE:
This is the answer to the question everyone has been asking: WHY DO THEY HATE US?
Bin Laden is wicked and wrong just as the deception and brutality of Ariel Sharon is inexcusable. Both count as vicious terrorists. Yet American leaders make Bin Laden's case look valid -- that the U.S. is out to fight for Israel's right to expand and rule the entire Middle East. What is really going on behind the scenes?
Question: What did the assumed Bin Laden tape recordings accuse? Answer: U.S. military attacks prompted by Israel against many Muslim nations.
Here is an American official immediately proving the accusation to be correct!

U.S. Undersec'y of State John Bolton
Syria and Iran are next.

U.S. Undersecretary of State John Bolton said in meetings with Israeli officials on Monday that he has no doubt America will attack Iraq, and that it will be necessary to deal with threats from Syria, Iran and North Korea afterwards. (maybe not that last part... about North Korea... any time soon)
Bolton, who is undersecretary for arms control and international security, is in Israel for meetings about preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction.
In a meeting with Bolton on Monday, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said that Israel is concerned about the security threat posed by Iran. It's important to deal with Iran even while American attention is turned toward Iraq, Sharon said.
Bolton also met with Foreign Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Housing and Construction Minister Natan Sharansky.
NOTE: Netanyahu and Sharansky along with Sharon are all well known for their avowal of the right of settlement and eventual claim to the West Bank and Gaza as part of Greater Israel -- although Sharon is currently lying that he is willing to enter into a peace process again after Iraq and other Arab nations are vanquished by the U.S. military. Is Bush such a fool, or does he know he is cooperating with these criminals?
The man behind the Bush Zionists in U.S. --
Sharansky in Israel
(who tells Cheney and Wolfowitz what to tell Bush to say)
Date: Fri Jul 5, 2002 10:53 am Subject: Coincidence? Parts of Bush speech match Sharansky proposal
Washington Post
July 2, 2002
A Sound Bite So Good, the President Wishes He Had Said It
By Dana Milbank
Is Natan Sharansky working in the White House speechwriting office?
Sharansky, Israel's housing minister and deputy prime minister, is the former Soviet dissident and head of a right-wing Russian-immigrant party. But by coincidence -- or something more -- the Israeli-Palestinian peace plan Sharansky published in the Jerusalem Post on May 3 sounds a lot like the peace proposal Bush delivered in the Rose Garden on June 24.
"The time has come for new leadership" for the Palestinians, Sharansky wrote. "The Palestinians must be encouraged to form an open and free society that is not burdened by the fear, hatred, and terror that have been sown in recent years by Arafat and his leadership."
Here's Bush's version: "Peace requires a new and different Palestinian leadership so that a Palestinian state can be born. I call on the Palestinian people to elect new leaders, leaders not compromised by terror."
Sharansky wrote that his seven-point plan "cannot happen overnight" and called for a "three-year transition period."
Bush, in turn, said a final agreement "could be reached within three years from now."
Sharansky envisioned an "international coordinating body" headed by the United States that could, with a Palestinian Administrative Authority, "develop the infrastructure for democratic life among the Palestinians." There would also be an "international economic fund" for industry and infrastructure.
And Bush? "I've asked Secretary Powell to work intensively with Middle Eastern and international leaders to realize the vision of a Palestinian state, focusing them on a comprehensive plan to support Palestinian reform and institution building." The president said the United States would work with the World Bank and international donors on "a major project of economic reform and development."
Finally, Sharansky argued that only a "free and open" society "can serve as a solid guarantee for normal relations between the two peoples." For this reason, "we owe it to ourselves and to our future to help the Palestinians help themselves."
Bush, seven weeks later, submitted that "a stable, peaceful Palestinian state is necessary to achieve the security that Israel longs for." Israel should "take concrete steps to support the emergence of a viable, credible Palestinian state," he added.
The Sharansky and Bush plans are not entirely the same; notably absent from Sharansky's version was Bush's call for Israel to freeze its settlements in Palestinian territory. Still, Sharansky themes began to tumble from the lips of Bush officials.
Speechwriting director Michael Gerson did not return a phone call asking about the coincidence.
The following article shows how Sharansky's influence came to Bush through Cheney, Perle, Wolfowitz, and other Zionist sympathizers (these can be either Christian fundamentalists or Jewish dual loyalists) in the Bush administration. Sharansky speaks in public about "democracy" but actually is a leader of right-wing elements in Israel that believe in the ethnic superiority of Jews and eventual take-over of all Palestinian territory through expansion of Zionist settlements and eventual transfer out of all non-Jewish residents from the West Bank and Gaza.

Newsweek
July 15, 2002 Sharansky’s Quiet Role
What pushed Bush to demand that Arafat must go? Part of the answer lies on a forest path in Colorado
By Dan Ephron and Tamara Lipper
Natan Sharansky, one time Soviet dissident and now an Israeli cabinet minister, had been hammering at the same themes for years in lectures and private meetings with U.S. officials: peace would never be possible without democracy. Suddenly something clicked at a conference of conservative heavyweights in Beaver Creek, Colo., last month.
VICE PRESIDENT DICK Cheney was there, taking notes. So was Paul Wolfowitz, the deputy Defense secretary. The two Americans had been working with others on a major Middle East policy speech for the president, and though they had both met Sharansky many times before, his address struck a chord. Dump the region’s dictators, and make democracy a precondition for peace. “It was pretty much the talk of the conference,” says Richard Perle, an influential Pentagon adviser who helped bring Sharansky to the forum. Two days later President George W. Bush announced the United States was fed up with the Palestinian leadership and effectively ended the era of American engagement with Arafat.
Score one for Sharansky and his crusade to alter the course of American diplomacy. Bush’s speech, possibly the most significant Middle East policy announcement by the United States in a decade, was hardly his doing alone. Arafat fatigue in the Bush administration had been on the rise at least since January, when U.S. officials believe the Palestinian leader lied to Bush about an arms shipment from Iran. Israeli intelligence kept up a steady stream of information linking Arafat to the financing of suicide attacks. By the time Cheney and other delegates arrived at the June 20 conference, Bush advisers had been working on the address for weeks and written nearly 30 drafts, according to one official. Sharansky may have strengthened the resolve of officials who argued against wording that would keep lines open to Arafat. The decision to drop the Palestinian leader was made shortly before Bush spoke out.“Sharansky provided an important bit of last-minute affirmation,” says Perle.
Palestinians object that Arafat is no dictator. He was elected in a 1996 ballot deemed free and fair by observers. And though his regime has jailed political opponents and trampled free speech, Israelis have hardly done better. Palestinians never had full civil rights during decades of Israeli rule.
Sharansky is hoping he had a hand in reshaping U.S. policy. At the conference, he says, he spoke privately with Cheney for more than an hour Saturday, two days before the Bush announcement. “More than half our talk was devoted to what would be said in the speech,” he says.Later Saturday, Sharansky andWolfowitz were due at a dinner reception, but as an observant Jew, Sharansky said he couldn’t drive on the Sabbath. Instead, he and Wolfowitz trudged through a forest on foot to get to the dinner, their bodyguards in tow. “It gave us a chance to talk about everything—Arafat, international terrorism, Iraq and Iran and, of course, Jewish history, our roots and so on,” Sharansky says.
That coziness reflects a meeting of minds between Sharansky and Bush’s chief ideologues. Sharansky reads the Bush speech as a broader policy statement about dictators everywhere and says the United States should withdraw support not only for Arafat but for regimes like the one in Saudi Arabia. That might be going too far for Washington, where officials say Bush had mainly Palestinians and Israelis in mind. But as far as the Israelis are concerned, it’s a big step in the right direction.
NOTE: Zionist leaders in the foreign state of Israel,
in other words, can and do determine U.S. Foreign Policy.
Sharansky's motive is obviously not democracy for the Arab people. Read next about the deception behind Sharansky's influence on the "Bush doctrine" of using U.S. military force to "liberate" first Iraq and then force "progress" upon the several other Arab nations.
We have chosen to profile Anatoly Sharansky, the Israeli deputy prime minister and leader of Yisra'el Ba'aliyah, the Russian immigrants' party in Israel, because he encapsulates the paradox of the Jewish inhabitants of Israel, a paradox that is the hallmark of Zionists throughout the world. That is, how can a people that has suffered so much over the ages, from pogroms in Europe to Nazi genocide, emulate their historical oppressors and be so lacking in empathy with their victims, the Palestinian Arabs?(We salute the tiny minority of Jews in Israel and elsewhere who have risked opprobrium by consistently speaking out for Palestinian rights.) Anatoly Sharansky (we shall call him by his birth name, Anatoly, rather than Natan, the name given to him by the Israeli ambassador to West Germany upon his release from prison) was born in Ukraine and educated in Russia as a mathematician. In 1973 he applied for an exit visa to Israel, but, like all Soviet citizens who had worked in the military-industrial complex, he was refused on security grounds. He then became involved in an Israeli-sponsored worldwide campaign to put pressure on the Kremlin to give special treatment to Soviet Jewish citizens by allowing them to emigrate to Israel, irrespective of whether or not they had worked in the defence sector. In 1977 he was arrested on suspicion of spying for the US, and in the following year he was found guilty as charged and sentenced to 13 years imprisonment. He was released in 1986 in a US-Soviet spy exchange. Prior to his emigration to Israel, Sharansky liked to portray himself as a symbol of the struggle for human rights, and since then he has made much of his status as a former "victim of totalitarian oppression". However, his belief in human rights, nurtured at the height of the Cold War, appears to have been heavily tainted with the culture of the Soviet-American power struggle, which justified the cynical use of practically anything as ammunition in the superpower rivalry for global dominance. Unlike most of us, Sharansky apparently does not believe that human rights are universal and indivisible, that is, applicable to all human beings everywhere and irrespective of their race, colour or creed. Not only does he oppose any Israeli concessions that may eventually lead to the realization of the Palestinians' right to self determination, but he advocates policies that could only mean the dispossession of more Palestinians living in Israel, and the illegally occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. No wonder that he was one of the very few people to have amicable relations with the former ultra right-wing prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu. Sharansky began his political career in Israel by becoming head of the Zionist Forum, an organization dedicated to lobbying on behalf of Soviet immigrants. However, not content with being a mere "welfare worker", in 1995 he founded the Yisra'el Ba'aliyah party, with the immediate aim of bringing in another million Jewish immigrants from the former Soviet Union and of encouraging a further million Jewish citizens of the United States and the European countries to immigrate to Israel. For him, the value of peace with the Palestinians is measured solely by the extent to which it would work towards achieving the overriding goal of encouraging Jewish citizens of other states to immigrate to Israel. Thus, addressing the founding congress of Yisra'el Ba'aliyah in June 1995, he said: "Without the hope for peace, you cannot convince people to come here." That the "ingathering of the Jews", that is, the bringing into Israel and the occupied territories of millions of foreign Jews who, like Sharansky himself, had no link whatsoever to those lands, could only mean the dispossession of more Palestinians from the land of their ancestors is a fact that could hardly have escaped our human rights hero. Or perhaps, having been brought up in a society where ideology and the class struggle dictated one's view of life and where all conflicts were seen as a zero-sum game, with victors and vanquished, be they a class or a superpower, he was blinded by his own ideology, Zionism. For almost in the same breath as reiterating his commitment to the "ingathering" of millions of foreign Jews, Sharansky is perfectly at ease with publicly objecting to any hint of allowing Palestinians to take up residence in the territories administered by the Palestinian National Authority or to the right of refugees to return to those territories, even if they had families living there. Indeed, the impact of the Soviet system on Sharansky's mind appears to have gone much deeper. Thus, like the Soviet habit of remoulding the history books to suit themselves, our human rights hero insists that any Israeli withdrawal from the occupied territories should be made contingent on, among other things, the Palestinians rewriting their school books "to remove all language that denies the legitimacy of Israel and Zionism". In other words, Palestinian children should be taught that their uprooting from the land of their forefathers by foreigners from the former Soviet Union, Europe and the United States was perfectly legitimate. Sharansky resigned as Israeli interior minister in former Prime Minister Ehud Barak's government over rumours that Barak was contemplating some trivial "concessions" over Jerusalem, territory and the refugees at the Camp David talks with Palestinian leaders in July 2000. But, judging by the unpopularity among Israelis of making any concessions to the people they had uprooted, and given his solid support among the Russian immigrants, Sharansky must now have his vision firmly fixed on the position of Israeli prime minister. In the meantime, it would do him well to learn from the history of his Slav cousins in the Balkans. For while the Zionists have the dubious honour of being the twentieth century's first ethnic cleansers, Sharansky's kith and kin in the Balkans (let us not forget that our human rights hero is a Russian, albeit of the Jewish religion), have taken that tradition to its logical conclusion, with tragic consequences for themselves and their victims. His blind ambition aside, Sharansky has a responsibility to his compatriots and co-religionists in Israel because, as in the Balkans, the burden of history weighs heavily on the shoulders of the indigenous people of Palestine whose continuing misfortunes are unlikely to let them forget the architects of their plight. As a Russian, Sharansky should know more than anyone else that great powers, even nuclear ones, come and go and that the fall can be sudden and cruel. But, with his contradictions and double standards, our human rights hero is unlikely to learn anything. Rather, when the time comes to write his obituary Anatoly Sharansky will most probably be remembered as Israel's great Russian dissembler, with his years as a so-called "human rights campaigner" not warranting even a footnote.
NOTE: This is the man behind the nonsense of Bush's promotion campaign for "democracy" in the Arab world. Is it little wonder that "the Arab street" and some Arab leaders suspect that the real goal is the expansion of Greater Israel?
Greater Israel (the grander view)
The Israel of Theodore Herzl (1904) and of Rabbi Fischmann (1947)
In his Complete Diaries, Vol. II. p. 711, Theodore Herzl, the founder of Zionism, says that the area of the Jewish State stretches: "From the Brook of Egypt to the Euphrates."
Rabbi Fischmann, member of the Jewish Agency for Palestine, declared in his testimony to the U.N. Special Committee of Enquiry on 9 July 1947: "The Promised Land extends from the River of Egypt up to the Euphrates, it includes parts of Syria and Lebanon."
NOTE: Sometimes the term Nile to the Euphrates is used, whereas the Brook of Egypt may be another lesser waterway about 100 miles East of the Nile. Either way, it adds up to the confiscation of a huge amount of Arab territory.
Selections from
The Zionist Plan for the Middle East
Translated and edited by
Israel Shahak
(Concentration camp survivor and anti-Zionist Jew)
In 1982 Shahak wrote the following commentary on the Israeli policy text he translated into English. Note that the main schemer then was Ariel Sharon whose invasion of Lebanon was part of this plan for division and conquest of the entire Arab world. Sharon is now again in power but has used American Zionist sympathizers like Perle and Wolfowitz to have the U.S. military carry out his scheme for the ultimate establishment of Greater Israel.
These men are not reprehensible because they happen to be Jews. Many American Jews oppose both the war against Iraq and Israel's cruel occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. These men may be guilty of questionable loyalties that appear to place the interests of Israel above the security of the United States. It is not their religious or ethnic group that is being questioned. It is their political and military influence upon Bush apparently due to a fanatical commitment to Zionism that is at issue.
The following essay represents, in my opinion, the accurate and detailed plan of the present Zionist regime (of Sharon and Eitan) for the Middle East which is based on the division of the whole area into small states, and the dissolution of all the existing Arab states. I will comment on the military aspect of this plan in a concluding note. Here I want to draw the attention of the readers to several important points:
2. The strong connection with Neo-Conservative thought in the USA is very prominent, especially in the author's notes. But, while lip service is paid to the idea of the "defense of the West" from Soviet power, the real aim of the author, and of the present Israeli establishment is clear: To make an Imperial Israel into a world power. In other words, the aim of Sharon is to deceive the Americans after he has deceived all the rest.
NOTE: American Neo-Conservatives run the American Enterprise Institute where President George Bush gave his February 26, 2003 "War on Iraq" speech with all its lying nonsense about how the goal is liberation of the Iraqi people and democracy in the Middle East. He clearly stated how proud he is that 20 members of this Zionist dominated "think tank" are part of his administration's top planners.

Zionists who practiced brutal conquest --
See their photos and confessions next.
Here is an example of an ultra-Zionist who preached and practiced this doctrine that King Saud opposed. Just in case we think such ideas are no longer honored by extremists in Israel, this biography is from a Zionist website that honors Avraham Stern -- a well-known killer whose "Stern Gang" perpetrated massacres and assassinations during the period leading up to the creation of the State of Israel. Many Arab leaders knew exactly what plans for bloody conquest of their own homelands Zionist fanatics like this intended.
The new coalition government that Sharon recently established contains many open advocates of the "ethnic cleansing" (so-called transfer) of all Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza. What would the world say if Bush made a coalition government in the U.S. with the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazis who would fiercely advocate the deportation of all non-whites from American soil? The ultra-Zionists in the Israeli government right now consider these racist murderers below to be heros.
Also, the settlements Sharon originally encouraged many years ago and Sharansky has more recently promoted are mostly populated by vicious fanatics who believe in the Greater Israel scheme and are prepared to annihilate Palestinians and other Arabs to bring it about. These too are their great heros.
AVRAHAM (YAIR) STERN: THE IDEOLOGY OF THE LEHI
National Revival Principles (HaTechiya) The Fighters for the Freedom of Israel (FFI) - The LEHI by Avraham (Yair) Stern, zt"l
1. THE NATION
The Jewish people is a covenanted people, the originator of monotheism, formulator of the prophetic teachings, standard bearer of human culture, guardian of glorious patrimony. The Jewish people is schooled in self-sacrifice and suffering; its vision, survivability and faith in redemption are indestructible.
2. THE HOMELANDThe homeland in the Land of Israel within the borders delineated in the Bible ("To your descendants, I shall give this land, from the River of Egypt to the great Euphrates River." Genesis 15:18) This is the land of the living, where the entire nation shall live in safety.
3. THE NATION AND ITS LAND
Israel conquered the land with the sword. There it became a great nation and only there it will be reborn. Hence Israel alone has a right to that land. This is am absolute right. It has never expired and never will.
4. THE GOALS
1. Redemption of the land. 2. Establishment of sovereignty. 3. Revival of the nation.
There is no sovereignty without the redemption of the land, and there is no national revival without sovereignty.
These are the goals of the organization during the period of war and conquest:
5. EDUCATION
Educate the nation to love freedom and zealously guard Israel's eternal patrimony. Inculcate the idea that the nation is master to its own fate. Revive the doctrine that "The sword and the book came bound together from heaven" (Midrash Vayikra Rabba 35:8)
6. UNITY
The unification of the entire nation around the banner of the Hebrew freedom movement. The use of the genius, status and resources of individuals and the channeling of the energy, devotion and revolutionary fervor of the masses for the war of liberation.
7. PACTS
Make pacts with all those who are willing to help the struggle of the organization and provide direct support.
8. FORCE
Consolidate and increase the fighting force in the homeland and in the Diaspora, in the underground and in the barracks, to become the Hebrew army of liberation with its flag, arms, and commanders.

UNKNOWN SOLDIERS Anthem of the Fighters for the Freedom of Israel (LEHI)
by Yair (Avraham) Stern, zt"l
We are unknown soldiers, uniforms we have none,
In death's shadow we march, in its terror,
Volunteering to sever to the end of our days,
Only death from our duty can us sever.
In days red with slaughter, destruction and blood,
Nights black with pain and despair,
Over village and town our flag we'll unfurl,
Love and freedom the message 'twill bear.
Not like slaves brought to heel were we dragged to the fight,
In strange lands our life's blood to squander,
And if we must die our people to free,
We are willing our lives to surrender.
In days red with slaughter...
With obstacles rising to block every move,
By fate cruelly sent to entrap us,
Neither enemy, prison or miserable spy
Will we ever permit to divert us.
In days red with slaughter...
Should we happen to fall in some building or street,
To be furtively buried by night,
Many thousands of others will rise in our stead
To defend and continue the fight.
In days red with slaughter...
With the tears of mothers bereaved of their young,
Sacred infant's blood want only spilt,
We'll cement the bricks of our bodies for walls
And our homeland will surely be built
In days red with slaughter, destruction and blood,
Nights black with pain and despair,
Over village and town our flag we'll unfurl
Love and freedom the message 'twill bear.
Do these Zionist fanatics sound any less fanatical than Bin Laden?
Is it only a "crazy Arab" notion that some Zionists then and now
have intended to eventually conquer most of the Muslim world?

One Truth and Not Two
by Uri Zvi Greenberg
(interpreted from Hebrew by Laurence Cramer)
Your Rabbis taught: A land is bought with money
You buy the land and work it with a hoe. And I say: A land is not bought with money
And with a hoe you also dig and bury the dead.
And I say: A land is conquered with blood.
And only when conquered with blood is hallowed to the people
With the holiness of the blood.
And only one who follows after the cannon in the field,
Thus wins the right to follow after his good plow
On this, the field that was conquered.
And only such a field gives nourishing and healthy bread
And the house which arises on its hill is truly a fortress and a temple,
Because in this field there is honorable blood. Your Rabbis taught: The messiah will come in future generations:
And Judea will arise without fire and without blood.
It will arise with every tree, with every additional house.
And I say: If your generation will be slow
And will not grasp in its hands and forcibly mold its future
And in fire will not come with the Shield of David
And in blood will not come with its horses saddled -
The Messiah will not come even in a far off generation.
Judea will not arise.
And you will be living slaves to every foreign ruler.
Your houses will be straw for the sparks of every wicked one.
And your trees will be cut down with their ripe fruit.
And a man will react the same as a babe
To the sword of the enemy -
And only your ramblings will remain - yours...
And your statue, an eternal curse. Your Rabbis taught: There is one truth for the nations:
Blood for blood - but it is not a truth for Jews.
And I say: There is one truth and not two.
As there is one sun and as there are not two Jerusalems.
It was written in the Law of Conquest of Moses and Joshua
Until the last of my kings and my traitors have consumed. And there will be a day when from the river of Egypt until the Euphrates And from the sea until the mountain passes of Moav my boys will go up And they will call my enemies and my haters to the last battle. And the blood will decide:
Who is the only ruler here.
Here is some information about how Zionist extremists and their American Christian supporters are working together to create chaos and bloodshed and may thus be engaging in a self-fulfilling prophesy of a great Armageddon. Consider President Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Ashcroft in on this dangerous and deluded scheme. The American ultra-Zionists who are influencing them are Richard Perle, William Kristol, Paul Wolfowitz, Eliot Abrams, and others who appear to place their loyalty to Israel above the true interests of the United States. Our men and women in the U.S. military are being sent to fight and die for Israel to be safe from Arab countries that are concerned about Israeli designs upon their own nation's soil. In the process, many innocents on both sides of this conflict will perish needlessly. This below is the mentality behind our current events. The Muslim claim of a Zionist-Christian "crusade" does not sound so absurd if we know the facts often unrevealed by our usual media.
In the Shadow of Stern: The Inside Story of a LEHI
Intelligence Officer
B’tzedek Volume 1, Number 2
Summer/Fall 1997/ 5757
by Arno Hakohen Weinstein
DURING THE early days of Israel's formation as an independent nation, there were those who saw the Jewish quest of two thousand years as a diplomatic struggle, and there were those for whom it meant war.
It may be that history has yet to judge the more critical of the two, for each position developed followers that continue to struggle with each other, as they did from the earliest years of the Zionist mission.
Those elements within the nascent Jewish State that relied on the violent removal of foreign powers from Mandate Palestine included the Fighters for Freedom of Israel (LEHI). The organization was founded by Avraham Stern and sought the liberation of Eretz Israeland the establishment of an autonomous Jewish polity.
This is the story of one intelligence officer of the LEHI. His name is Stanley Goldfoot. South African by birth, Mr. Goldfoot today resides in Jerusalem, and remains ever vigilant of Israel's future. The editors of B’tzedek were granted an interview with Mr. Goldfoot in an attempt to better understand one of the more dramatic events in the history of the LEHI and the nation of Israel. That event was the execution of United Nations' mediator Count Folke Bernadotte in the fall of 1948...
To read the entire "glorious" confession of how Bernadotte was assassinated, just go to the Zionist site that honors Goldfoot's crime:
To see how Jerry Falwell also honors this terrorist and assassin, read the selection below and then the entire article by Grace Halsell, an American journalist and former White House speech writer during the Johnson administration.
Christian Fundamentalist And Jewish Orthodox Cults Plot Destruction Of Al Aqsa Mosque
For three decades, Gershon Solomon, a militant Israeli who heads an organization dedicated to the destruction of Jerusalem's most holy Islamic shrine, has led Zionist zealots in armed assaults on the Muslim grounds of Haram al-Sharif, or Noble Sanctuary, that encloses both the Dome of the Rock and Al Aqsa mosque. No Israeli political leader has spoken out against the assaults on the Mosque, holy to a billion Muslims around the world. Moreover, no Israeli rabbi has condemned them. Indeed, beginning in 1967, many of the assaults were led by Jewish rabbis.
I first heard about the Israeli militants' intent to destroy the mosque in 1979 when I went to Jerusalem. I talked at length with Bobby Brown, a third-generation American from Brooklyn, flying to the Jewish state and instantly became a new citizen, confiscated land from Palestinians to help build an illegal Jewish settlement. "The mosque," he told me, "has got to go. It is a blot in our land."
Militant Jews such as Brown and Solomon want a Jerusalem that is pure Jewish - without evidence of inhabitants of the other monotheistic faiths and their shrines. Surprisingly, millions of U.S. evangelical Christians endorse and financially support this Jewish plan. Although united in the immediate goal of destroying the mosque, the Israeli militants and Christian zealots have different long-range agendas.
Secular Jews, such as Stanley Goldfoot, one of the perpetrators of the dynamiting in 1946 of the King David Hotel which killed some 100 Christian, Muslim and Jewish civilians, want the mosque destroyed for political reasons. Other Jews believe that the building of the temple on the Muslim grounds will usher in the Jewish Messiah. A growing number of Christians embrace the idea that in all history, Israel is on the center stage. They say God has planned epochs of time ("dispensations") such as the "in-gathering of the Jews in the ancient land of Canaan. One epoch, they say, includes the present time when Jews are obligated to build a Jewish temple and re-institute animal sacrifice, Such epochs or "dispensations" are necessary, they say before Christ can return.
Ironically, while Christian dispensationalists place Israel as the most important nation in all the world, they do not respect or even like Jews- as Jews. Yet, because they believe Christ can only land in a "safe" area near Jerusalem, they make a cult of the land. They thus give total, unquestioned support to Israel.
Goldfoot and Solomon are welcome in countless U.S. pulpits, where Christian Zionists give generous donations of money, as well as their gold wedding rings and gold earrings to finance the mosque's destruction. They know its destruction might well trigger wars culminating in Armageddon, but they welcome this. They push Armageddon along, saying they, as "Born Again Christians," will be spared any suffering, because they will be "Raptured," wafted up into heaven to view the slaughter below.
"I am not worried," Lynchburg, Virginia televangelist Jerry Falwell shouts. "You know why? I ain't gonna be here!" This dispensationalist doctrine, less then 200 years old, pervades Assemblies Of God, Pentecostal and other charismatic churches, as well as the 16 million-member Southern Baptist Convention and countless so-called Bible churches and mega-churches.
It's estimated that at least one out of every 10 Americans is a devotee of this cult. In both Israel and the U.S., a conspiracy of silence reigns as militants lay siege to the Jerusalem mosque. No political leader - or religious leader- in Israel or the U.S. has addressed this issue. In the case of Israeli rabbis, if they themselves have not aided and abetted planned assaults on the mosque, they have kept silent. In the case of all major U.S. Christian church leaders - the voices that are heard throughout the land- if they themselves are not raising money to destroy the mosque, they keep silent about the conspiracy...

Forcing God's Hand: Why Millions Pray for a Quick Rapture-- And Destruction of Planet Earth
Does God want--even demand--that those of us living today destroy Planet Earth?
Jim Jones led his followers to death telling them the end is near, so let's get on with it. Today, most TV evangelists say the same. David Koresh of the "Branch Davidians" and leaders of "Heaven's Gate" led followers to death declaring the world was doomed to imminent destruction.
The danger to America, however, lies not so much in the so-called "crazies" as with mainstream Christians who have embraced a theology less than 200 years old. It gives them a free Rapture ticket. While they are certain there will be a great Tribulation--of wars ending in a final war--they are brainwashed to believe they won't suffer a moment of agony. As Jerry Falwell puts it, "I'm not worried. You know why? I ain't gonna be here."
These cult members look like your average next-door neighbors. They attend a variety of Protestant churches, including those known as charismatic. They are rife among the 16-million-member Southern Baptist Convention. They also are members of so-called Bible churches and mega-churches, such as those attended by Special Prosecutor Kenneth Starr in McLean, Virginia, and Congressman Tom DeLay in Sugarland, a suburb of Houston.
One of every ten Americans is a member of this cult. By praying for their Rapture and the End of Time, might they force the hand of God--to bring it about? Forcing God's Hand was Grace Halsell's last book. Her death occurred in 2000, less than a year after its publication and shortly before now Israel Prime Minister Sharon intently provokes a crisis and new "Intifada" by going to the "Temple Mount" with soldiers.
We will soon have a Memorial page for humanitarian Grace Halsell
at this website with many photos and articles. 1923-2000
Not all Zionist warriors had quite so vast a conquest in mind as Egypt to Iraq. This is the "map" the Irgun, headed by later Prime Minister Menachem Begin, saw as representing the territory they were to seize from the Arab inhabitants. Begin took part in "terror" activities such as the bombing of the King David Hotel and massacres of Arab villagers. Albert Einstein and other Jews who opposed viciousness condemned the behavior of Begin and others like him. Christian Fundamentalist preacher Jerry Falwell also became a great buddy to Begin and continues to promote other Zionists today who call for "ethnic cleansing" of the West Bank which Falwell refers to as Judea and Samaria.
Greater Israel (the lesser views) Rak Kach
Emblem of the Irgun which shows all of Palestine and Transjordan as the conquest goal in the late 1940s.
This is the Israeli coin that some Arabs seem to see having the image of a map of the grander
"Greater Israel," although, if it is a map at all, it would appear to be more like the Irgun emblem.
See below an account of how an American discovered that Palestinians in Gaza do believe in Israeli intentions to conquer from the Nile to the Euphrates. Why would these oppressed people not suspect Zionist plots that might appear to us as "paranoid" unless we realize the very real fears behind them? Are these Palestinians crazy, or do they know the long history of Zionist schemes which rarely is revealed in our U.S. media?

I'm not sure what conclusions to draw from these experiences. Life is very bad here. It seems that the daily hardship and humiliation these people suffer at the hands of the Israelis can only lead to hopelessness. And people with nothing to lose are much more likely to take drastic measures than people who feel secure. I have met many people here who condemn the operations against Israel. Everyone I've met here says they want peace, that all they want is the right to live freely in their own land, that 60 years ago Jews, Christians, and Muslims all lived here together peacefully. Everyone I've met has told me that they believe this land is for all the people of the world to share. People here ask me what else they can do when everything they have tried has failed. I don't know what to tell them. The situation seems hopeless.
The ten agorot coin is the smallest value coin in circulation in Palestine and Israel. When I first saw this coin, before anyone told me what it was, I thought the image engraved on the back was a map with a menorah superimposed over it. Many Palestinians believe that this image is a map of the biblical land of Israel, a map of all the land from the Euphrates to the Nile, two-thirds of Iraq, all of Jordan, most of Lebanon, all of the Sinai Peninsula, and of course all of the West Bank and Gaza. Every Palestinian I have asked about the image has told me this.Yasser Arafat always used to carry these coins with him as evidence of Israel's expansion plans. The designer of the coin claims that this is not a map at all, that it is simply the outline of an ancient Judean coin, the smooth edges of which had worn away centuries ago. Any resemblance to a map, we are told, is purely coincidental. Even if the designer did not intend for this image to be interpreted as a map, it seems strange to me that no one bothered to see if Palestinians would find the image on the coin offensive before putting it into circulation. But it's not so strange really. Even if this coin isn't proof of Zionist expansion plans, it is definitely evidence of the State of Israel's insensitivity to the needs of Palestinians. Only a year ago the five agorot coin was taken out of circulation because the Israeli currency is declining so rapidly. Two years ago, the New Israeli Sheqel was worth about 33 cents. Today, it is worth just a little over 20 cents, a decline of over 30%. There are 100 Agorot in a sheqel. So this coin that has generated so much controversy is worth only about two cents today. About the only thing it can buy is a small piece of candy for a child. In fact, children are the only people I have ever seen spending one of these coins. When I arrived here a month ago, the exchange rate was 4.7 sheqels to the US Dollar. Now it is 4.9. Soon the ten agorot coin will be as worthless as its predecessors and will be taken out of circulation as well. If only the ideas it represents to so many people would lose currency as easily.
Below is map of (the pink areas) where current extremist Zionists are telling Jews worldwide to come to live even if it means driving all Arabs out. This area actually goes well beyond present Palestinian territory (the West Bank and Gaza) into a wider intended Israel that includes areas already returned in peace accords like the Sinai to Egypt after the 1967 war. Recruiting new Jewish immigrants worldwide to resettle some of these areas would mean a new war to reoccupy them.
QUOTE FROM ZIONIST SITE: You need this land and it needs you, many of you. Millions of new Jews pouring into Israel will fill up its empty spaces,
guarantee the retention of all the liberated lands of Judea, Samaria, Golan, Gaza, and Sinai;
assure a vast Jewish majority; add Western democratic and technical skills to the land.
Eretz Yisrael will never again be lost to us!
(from the ahavat-israel.com site -- appeal for Jews to come to settle areas above)
NOTE: The Sinai would have to be reoccupied to do this.
This image of the grander "Greater Israel" is the only one presently on a Zionist site in English. The implication is that this may happen not necessary as a political or military objective but perhaps after the Jewish "Messiah." The map, however, is very clear that these Zionists see themselves as eventual rulers of most Arab lands.
Greater Israel Map In Hebrew
Does this image make it clear enough that what the Arabs and other Muslims have claimed,
about schemes for Israeli expansionism, is actually a valid concern and not baseless craziness?
These other "Greater Israel" images are at anti-Zionist sites that make the accusation of Israeli conquest plans.

Leaders Crave Area from Egypt to Iraq
by John Mitchell Henshaw
NOTE: The late John Henshaw was chief legman for columnist Drew Pearson, who later broke with Pearson. At that time, Henshaw’s expenses were paid by the Anti-Defamation League, a lobby for Israel, which had a "special relationship" with Pearson. Thus Henshaw’s Middle East insights are unique.
Israel Plans Britzkrieg to Capture Arab Oil Fields Operation Shekhinah -- February 2002
by Joe Vialls
If there is any validity to Mr. Vialls claim -- it would appear that ultra-Zionist sympathizers in Bush's administration have now seen to it that American men and women military persons will be the ones to fight and die for Israel's need for oil and expansion plans into Greater Israel.
Video on Internet of settler saying
"Nile to Euphrates" belongs to the Jews
Some folks say that our Greater Israel web page is ridiculous and that Israelis today do not believe that most of the Middle East belongs to the Jews because of an ancient promise to Abraham (which if even interpreted fairly would mean Arabs and Jews, not just Jews alone). Of course, their quick denial is because they do not actually read all the material and visit the more extensive evidence through the many links we provide. The reality is that there are many Israelis who do not lay claim to all of the Middle East stretching out to the Euphrates river. But there are many who do, and many of these many happen to be the most aggressive and fanatical settlers in the West Bank and Gaza. Please do not forget that Ariel Sharon used to be the Housing Minister who greatly encouraged the establishment of these settlements (illegal colonies to put it more bluntly). You can count on it that he does know what these people stand for and that any so-called plans for any kind of unilateral withdrawal or peace plans are just Sharon's latest trickery. Here below we have some new evidence.
Our alfredlilienthal.com webstats tell us where a visitor has come from -- for instance Google search, or some Mideast related website, or from a specific message board. Sometimes I go and visit the place of origin. At one message board that resulted several days ago, I found discussion about the idea of whether Israel has designs on expanding into the rest of the Middle East. Someone there had posted this information below. I checked it out and found it valid. Although I do not know Dutch, you can tell from the written words on the screen at the point where Tigris and Euphrates are being said by the settler named Yossi Neumann that the words match. Someone who knew Dutch had translated what was actually said into English at the message board.
When you click on the video link at the website, pick Real Player as your viewer. Once the video appears, click on the (r) on the right of the play bar and choose "Play in Real Player". That will put it into a mode where you can see the minutes and seconds going by. Then click and hold on the knob toward the left on the play bar (it is shaped like this: >| with a circle around it. This will fast forward the video with the minutes showing. Go to about 11:00. Soon after (about 11:20) will be the statement by the settler and a map that shows the area of Greater Israel. The rest of the video from start to finish is very good (even without understanding most of what is said) and shows many scenes of the horrors done to the Palestinians and the contrasting comfortable lifestyle of the settlers. Of course we do not see such scenes on American TV reports.
Here is what was actually posted at the message board. I have corrected the spelling from Eufrates to Euphrates. Suzanne Nicole, webmaster for Alfred M. Lilienthal
A mainstreampolitical program on Dutch public television called 2-Today not only showed the relationship between Sharon's Likud Fraction, his IDF and the Gush Emunim Settlers but also interviews in which Zionist Settlers propagate that the Zionist State is from the Nile (in Egypt) to the Euphrates (in Iraq) and that this is government policy.
The program continues by showing footage of an animated picture of the 'Greater Israel' and how it occupies the Arab peninsula.
Following transcript corresponds to the minutes 11.40 - 12.20 on the video.
Yossi Neumann, the settler (colonist is the term in the video), says: We Jews read the bible and believe that our forefathers were told what the borders are of the Promised Land. From the Euphrates & the Tigris in the north till the Nile in the south.
The narrator says: That is the religious dream of the colonists, the Jewish state from the Nile in the south till the Euphrates in the north. .
The animated picture map shows not only an occupied Palestine, but an expanding Israel that reaches throughout most of the Middle East.
Is there any independent confirmation of King Saud's and Bin Laden's claim (if the reported tape is actually from him) of this grander Zionist scheme for taking over the entire Middle East as Greater Israel? Note that Saud claimed this was being taught in Israeli schools back in 1954.
An Honorable American Witness
Photo 1974 -- now deceased
Edwin Wright was born in Iran of missionary parents and knew the area well. He also studied Hebrew, and when assigned to the Near East issues at the U.S. State Department during the Truman years, he went to Palestine to find out for himself what was really going on. Here are some of his findings as given in his "Oral History" interview for the Truman Library.
This period is very important for what I have to say about serving under President Truman, because while I was there I realized that there was going to be a war between Jews and Arabs; that was just certain. This was because of the concepts of the two societies. One has to get into the attitude of mind and the philosophy of these two societies to understand this problem.
I made a special study of Zionism, and I talked with as many people as I could find who were the leaders of the Zionist community. I interviewed Golda Meir at that time; she was then labor secretary. I had conversations with Reuven Zaslani, who later was called Shiloah (all these people changed their names later on); Dov Joseph, who became the mayor of Jerusalem during the war; and Teddy Kolleck. I made a special effort to meet them, talk with them, and find out what Zionism is; what it stands for. I also found that there was a school in Tel Aviv, known as the Gymnasia Herzliya. It was the training school in which most of the modern leaders of Israel had gone; Moshe Dyan and others. I talked with a number of the teachers and professors there. I felt that this was a school dedicated to inculcating and indoctrinating [Theodor] Herzl's ideas into the minds of the young Jews in Palestine. [See: Moshe Menuhin, The Decadence of Judaism in our Times, Exposition Banner Book, 1965. He was a graduate of this school.]
At that time many of Herzl's writings were not yet translated into English. In fact, they were not translated until 1952, so no one had really any easy access to this material unless he knew German or Hebrew. I don't know either one of these very well. I studied some German and some Hebrew, but I talked with the people who were the professors there and also got to know Edwin Samuel, the son of Lord Samuel who was the first High Commissioner of Palestine.
With Edwin Samuel, I made trips all through the kubbutzim. We spent several days at Ein Geb, Mishmar Ha-Emek, and at various other of the kubbutzim. During this period I became convinced that Americans didn't know what Zionism was at all.
The material was not in English. There was very little of it known to America, and I came to the conclusion that it was a very dangerous type of philosophy of living.
What I found out was that Herzl had taught that all the Jews of the world should go to Israel. This was the idea that dominated the Yishuv (the Yishuv means the Jewish community of Palestine) and even Ben Gurion, who was at that time Secretary of the Jewish Agency.
The Jewish Agency was a shadow government. It already was a government of Israel; simply waiting for the veil to be pulled and it would emerge. It had all the functions of government. I found their ideas were that all Jews should leave the Gentile world. This is in Herzl: "Gentiles hate Jews, they are going to destroy the Jewish world." It's a paranoic view of things. The only way Judaism can be saved is for the Jews to leave the Gentile world completely; to go to a Jewish state, as Herzl put it in his book. There they would rule themselves and be able to get away from the hatred of the Gentile world. The Gentiles are out to destroy Judaism. [See: Theodore Herzl, The Jewish State, N.Y., 1943. Diaries in II Volumes]
I did not believe this. I think it's a false concept of society, and especially false of American society. Nevertheless, this is the foundation of Zionist thinking.
The second step was that this Jewish state must be in Palestine. This is the sacred home of the people; its literature was developed there, and their attitude was that Judaism cannot survive in any other place except Palestine itself. That's where it grew and germinated, and it's got to get back there in order to save itself. Otherwise, Jews are going to assimilate in other countries. Herzl himself made the statement that, when the Jewish state is set up, if a Jew does not go to live in it he is anti-Semitic because he chooses to live with Gentiles rather than live with Jews which are his real community.
I got all these ideas through talking with people who were Zionists. The third step in Zionism was that they must have large enough a state in order to keep the whole Jewish population there. At that time there were about fourteen million Jews, and now that meant owning a very large territory. It is not brought out in Zionist propaganda in America, but what they claim is all the territory from the Suez Canal clear north to the mountains of Cappadocia, in southern Turkey. [Statement by Herzl. Also see Numbers 34; Genesis 15:18, Joshua 13, II Samuel 8:5-6.} It includes all of Lebanon, much of Syria, Jordan, and Sinai. This is the territory they call "Eretz Israel," the land of Israel, which is mentioned in the Bible.
Furthermore, in the Bible you will find the boundaries of "Eretz Israel" as given by God. There are several places these are found, Numbers, the 34th Chapter and so forth.
One of the men whom I discussed this with was Rabbi Meyer Berlin, the Chief Rabbi in the Mizrachi group. These are the ultra-orthodox group, who accept the Old Testament literally. Everything that it says is exactly just as it's described.
This means from the Nile to the Euphrates --
just as King Saud warned in 1954.
Truman listened to Clark Clifford and other ignorant people who never cared to find out the facts as Ed Wright did. Truman later covered up his own blame by calling good men in the State Department like Wright: Arabist anti-Semites. President Truman could have known the truth and protected the Palestinians and other Arabs if he had listened to Secretary of State George Marshall and other advisors who told him not to sponsor and recognize a "Jewish" state based on racial and religious discrimination toward non-Jews. Instead, Truman foolishly listened to Zionist American schemers like Abraham Feinberg who raised the initial money for Truman's 1948 re-election campaign. This disgraceful conduct by an American President has been repeated in one form or another by many American leaders since. Read about the showdown between Clifford and Marshall at this link to see how a half century of horror in the Middle East could have been prevented.
Remembering General George Marshall’s
Clash With Clark Clifford
Over Premature Recognition of Israel
NOTE: General and now Secretary of State Colin Powell has called George Marshall the greatest Man of War and the greatest Man of Peace that America has ever known. Let us hope that Powell and others now will find the honor and courage of Marshall and refuse to support any of President Bush's future wars against other Mideast nations.
Will even more innocent Americans and Arabs (beyond what is already happening in Iraq) -- as well as innocent Jews in Israel and the U.S. who oppose extremist Zionism -- now die because we have been denied the facts for over 50 years?

How great can you get and is the world big enough? William Bowles Wednesday, April 16, 2003 At first sight, an alliance between right-wing Christian fundamentalists and right-wing Zionist fundamentalists might appear too bizarre to be true. But not if their long-term aims coincide as they do with the Bush and Sharon governments. How the two strands of neo-imperialist thinking connect is instructive and helps explain a lot of the events of today. Oil and land, you gotta have one with the other Sharon’s ‘Greater Israel’ crusade represents the fascist side of Israeli colonialism, masquerading as a ‘defence’ of the ‘Jewish homeland’. And it has suited US imperialist ambitions since the founding of Israel in 1948, to go along with this vision because the creation of Israel acted as a block to Arab nationalism and of course, as long as the Arab nations remain divided, gives free access to the vast oil reserves so crucial to the US economy. Taking out Saddam is clearly the first step in US attempts to redraw the map of the Middle East and take care of the Palestinian ‘problem’ at the same time. But will it work? And whilst the Bush/Blair alliance is happy to bleat about Saddam Hussein’s reign of terror, for decades the USUK was quite happy to turn a blind eye to the US puppet, the Shah of Iran’s reign of terror (and even supported the Ayotollah in the early days when it looked like a left-leaning, anti-western government would replace the Shah), the Feisal’s in Saudi Arabia, and the various and sundry petty potentates of the United Arab Emirates, not to mention USUK’s cynical support of Saddam Hussein, Muburak in Egypt, the right-wing Christian fundamentalist Falangists in Lebanon, King Hussein of Jordan. The list is long but the current onslaught only makes sense when put in the context of western imperialist ambitions following the collapse of the ‘Evil Empire’ in 1989. Who are the players? Whilst I am sure I’ll be accused of being a conspiracy nut, let’s look at who the players are in this latest US adventure starting with William Kristol, editor of the right-wing Weekly Standard, which published an Open Letter to President Bush a few days after 911, which asserted that it was imperative to "remove Saddam Hussein from power" and to "retaliate" against Syria and Iran. Kristol is also head of The Project for the New American Century and a former hack for Enron where he was paid $100,000 to say nice things about Enron in the columns of his publication. The Washington Post critic Howard Kurtz wrote that, "He…[Kristol, has] become part of Washington's circulatory system, this half-pol, half-pundit, full-throated advocate with the nice-guy image," who is "...wired to nearly all the Republican presidential candidates." (Feb 2000.) The Open Letter was published in the Weekly Standard, which was founded by Kristol with a $10 million gift from the ultra-rightwing press baron Rupert Murdoch. 41 leading neo-conservatives are all signatories to the Open Letter, including: Norman Podhoretz, editor of the right-wing Encounter magazine, and his wife, Midge Decter, also a writer with ultra-rightwing credentials Frank Gaffney of the Center for Security Studies Robert Kagan, also of the Weekly Standard Charles Krauthammer of the Washington Post, and, of course Richard Perle, ‘prince of darkness’ who is also a director of the Jersulem Post which is owned by right-wing Zionists And of course, the other suspects who are by now, well known to us but it’s worth listing them nevertheless: Paul Wolfowitz, father of the invasion of Iraq, is No. 2 in the Defense Dept. Douglas Feith, friend of Perle, heads the Pentagon Planning Board John Bolton is a State Department Undersecretary Eliot Abrams, responsible for the Middle East in the National Security Council, heavily embroiled in the Iran-Contra-Israel scandal. Another Iran-Contra player and convicted felon, Oliver North, is a member of the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs Michael Ledeen, also involved in the Iran-Contra scandal, advocates total war not only against Iraq, but also against Israel's other enemies, Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia and the Palestinian Authority Dov Zakheim who is comptroller for the Defense Department. Along with Vice-President Dick Cheney and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, nearly all are associated with the "Project for the New American Century", the ‘bible’ for US world domination. Other key players include: Meyrav Wurmser, Director of the Center for Middle East Policy at the Hudson Institute who also writes for the Jerusalem Post and is co-founder of the Middle East Media Research Institute which according to the Guardian is connected to Israeli Army Inlelligence. Meyrav's husband, Davis Wurmser, is at Perle's American Enterprise Institute, in charge of Middle East Studies. William Safire of the New York Times and an avid supporter of Ariel Sharon And Perle associate, Robert Bartley, who is the editor of the Wall Street Journal. The Christian Fundamentalist connection Extreme right-wing Christian fundamentalists, who now control Bush's Republican Party include: Jerry Falwell of the Moral Majority, who got a jet plane as a present from Menachem Begin, former prime minister of Israel. Pat Robertson of the Christian Coalition and the Christian Broadcasting Network, which help to finance the Christian Embassy in Jerusalem of J.W. van der Hoeven, an organisation that supports the settlers and their right-wing allies. Last but not least we have General Jay Garner, an ideological partner of Paul Wolfowitz and the neo-conservatives, who has been appointed head of the occupying forces in Iraq. In 2001, he signed a petition organized by the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs, praising the Israeli Army for "remarkable restraint in the face of lethal violence orchestrated by the leadership of the Palestinian Authority," After leaving the army in 1997, he became a defense contractor specializing in missiles. This year he obtained a defense contract for $1.5 billion, as well as a contract for building Patriot systems in Israel. Media complicity It is important to note the role of the mass media in this gallery of rogues as it includes influential writers on the main mouthpieces for US imperialism, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and of course, Murdoch’s Fox News Network. (For more the media’s role in pumping up the war, see http://www.fair.org/) But will it work? On paper, the USUK/Israeli alliance looks fine. Taken together, the military might of the alliance has no opposition. And with Israel’s Weapons of Mass Destruction, a Sword of Damocles hanging over the captive populations of the Arab world, who is to stop them? Yet of course, the world has changed. USUKIsrael can no longer count on the EU and global opposition to the warmongers plans is almost total. Yet is this enough to reign in the ambitions of the imperialists? If it’s simply down to military might, it’s obviously no contest. The question we must ask is whether or not USUK can carry out its plans using only its military dominance? The US economy is in dire straights. Indeed Western capitalism is in the throes of a crisis comparable only to the Crash of 1929. They are moreover, divided along a fault line which hinges along the issue of global warming and the potential environmental catastrophe the planet faces. A catastrophe which in no small part, is the result of unrestrained consumption, primarily by the US. In 1990, when the first climate conference took place in Rio, it is instrumental to note that it was the countries of Europe which first took on board the longer term implications of climate change, led by the then Chancellor Kohl of Germany. And in spite of all the fine words at the time, Clinton and later Bush Snr wouldn’t back them up with deeds. At first sight, it might appear that the issue of the planet’s biosphere and the imperialist ambitions for global domination are unconnected, yet the two are intimately linked through oil. The fault line then is the future of the capitalist economies and it’s the crossroads at which Europe as a whole and the US part company. Where does the UK fit into this game plan? Again, at first sight it’s difficult to determine what the Blair government stands to gain from its involvement. My own inclination is to put it down to tired old white men trying to recreate the empire of their dreams. For whatever the rationale was in the beginning of this disaster, it no longer holds. Are the interests of British capital tied to Europe or to the US? Blair has to decide. As it stands, he risks being caught in the middle of game he’s just not up to playing as he now in the league of the big guys. Current events back up my thesis. As the post-war scenario unravels, it’s clear that the Blair government is increasingly uneasy about the route the US warmongers are taking, though what he’ll be able to do about it is open to question. Not only because the WMDs have failed to materialize (though I’m sure the US will make sure they ‘turn up’ at some point). But crucially the handling by the USUK occupation forces is revealing to the world just how little they actually care about the Iraqi nation, its people and its culture. The trashing of Iraq’s national heritage while the ‘forces of freedom’ stood by and simply watched an act of cultural genocide being committed, and which is a crime against humanity (along with all the other crimes the USUK invasion has committed) under the UN Convention on Human Rights. Already, there is talk of the actual complicity by the USUK occupation forces in this crime. In addition, it’s clear that what actually faced the invading forces, far from being some kind of bloodthirsty army bent on taking over the Middle East and points North, South, East and West was in actuality, the rag tag remains of an army and a country that has been bombed into submission for the past twelve years. History repeating itself? The Balfour declaration of 1917, that promised the Jews a homeland in Palestine, was the brainchild of Lord Palmerston and Lord Shaftesbury. Palestine was selected because of its strategic position in relation to the Suez Canal and Britain’s control of the canal which it ‘stole’ from the French and the sea routes to its colonial possessions in the Far East. Richard Perle’s ‘grand plan’ echoes this vision which sees the occupation of the Arab nations and their oil whilst advancing Sharon’s vision of a ‘Greater Israel’. Indeed, Perle has publicly stated this as an objective. What can we do? First and foremost, inform ourselves. The media onslaught on both sides of the Atlantic is formidable with even the supposedly anti-war London Independent going with the flow. To give you a taste of the kind of double-speak we have to deal with, here are just a few statements from today’s (April 16) edition: Concerning the ‘evidence’ that Colin Powell submitted to the UN in February on intelligence material ‘proving’ that Iraq had acquired uranium (yellowcake) from an African country, the US now admits that it was "forged by a Western intelligence agency, possibly MI6 or Mossad." The Independent incredulously states the following: "The obvious question is: if President Hussein had such weapons, why didn’t he use them?" Duh? Obvious question? Surely the obvious question to ask is why did MI6 or Mossad forge them in the first place and, why did Powell choose to use information that was so obviously a forgery? Could it be because it order to justify the invasion of a sovereign state is was necessary to invent a reason? And if so, why doesn’t the Independent (independent?) ask this question? Or, here’s another classic piece of newspeak: "But what precedent has the Iraq war set for solving the problems of WMD [Weapons of Mass Destruction] in other countries such as North Korea, Iran or Pakistan?" But why no mention of Israel? And given all the crocodile tears spilt over Hussein’s treatment of Shia and Kurdish minorities, it has this say without breaking its stride: "Any Shia rebellion is likely to be crushed by America and its sponsored Iraqi forces [My emph. WB], just as Saddam and his predecessors did in previous times." Crushed? What like Saddam crushed them? One of the reasons I thought USUK went to war for in the first place was to put a stop to this kind of behaviour! Or finally, the issue of the Iraqi National Congress, headed by convicted felon Ahmed Chalabi (he embezzled $70 million from the Jordanian-based Petra bank and was sentenced to 22 years hard labour in abstentia) about which the Independent says: "…the most visible [in Iraq] exile opposition group before the war…" Visible? Who says? The Pentagon that’s who. Or, if you prefer, let the head of the INC in Washington tell us just how visible he or the INC is to the Iraqis: "They may not know the man. But he represents their views." Oh really? And why no mention of the INC’s connection to US oil interests? "The INC is quietly courting the American oil companies. In mid-October, Chalabi had a series of meetings with three major U.S. oil firms in Washington. "The oil people are naturally nervous," says INC spokesman Zaab Sethna, who took part in the meetings between Chalabi and the oil executives. "We've had discussions with them, but they're not in the habit of going around talking about them." That's true. In interviews, oil company officials speak cautiously and only on background about Iraq, laughing nervously at the idea of being quoted. They are extremely wary of associating themselves with the INC or with U.S. war plans for fear of angering Saudi Arabia and other oil-producing countries in the Persian Gulf. Asked about talks with the INC, one U.S. oil executive blanched, saying, "I can't discuss that, even on background."" For more on this puppet of US oil interests see http://www.prospect.org/print/V13/21/dreyfuss-r.html from which this extract is taken. If I can find it in about 10 seconds on Google, why can’t the Independent? Perhaps it doesn’t want to? I could go on but it hardly seems worth it. I’d rather you, the reader use this incredibly powerful tool we have, the Internet, to do your own investigating. After all, I’m not paid to do this, I just have an abiding interest and concern about what happens to the planet I live on. From the International Press Centre Sharon, Bush and the race for ‘Greater Israel’
By Patrick Seale 17 October 2003
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and his friends in Washington are in a hurry. They are racing to achieve their objectives before anyone stops them. And when they are in a hurry, they are particularly dangerous. Syria and Iran are in their sights, with further down the road Saudi Arabia, and even Egypt. Political and economic pressure, financial penalties, sanctions, intervention, regime change by military force, these are their chosen instruments for bending the Arabs to the will of Israel and its United States patron. Sharon’s main objective is the building of a “Greater Israel” on the ruins of Palestinian nationalism. His latest instrument is the wall or separation barrier which is imprisoning the Palestinians on a fraction of their territory, cutting them off on all sides from contact with their Arab neighbors. The wall is due to be finished in eight months’ time. Sharon is determined that nothing must prevent its completion. At the UN Security Council this week, he won a major victory when the United States vetoed a resolution, proposed by Syria, condemning the wall. Within hours, a radical Palestinian group attacked the motorcade of an American delegation in Gaza, killing three Americans and wounding a fourth. Sharon will no doubt exploit this latest incident to rally American opinion against the beleaguered Palestinian president, Yasser Arafat. Sharon’s main worry, however, and the reason for his haste, is that George W. Bush could be thrown out of office at next year’s US presidential election and with him the whole band of pro-Israeli neoconservatives which have set the administration’s agenda since Sept. 11, 2001. These are the men who pressed for war against Iraq as a first step toward reshaping the geopolitics of the entire Middle East. But the sluggish US economy, the mess in Iraq, and the anti-American anger sweeping the Arab and Muslim world are now making Bush look vulnerable. A Democrat in the White House may not be so tolerant of Israel’s foolhardy ambitions or so ready to endorse the neocons’ aggressive policies. Sharon has other worries closer to home. The political fallout from the current police investigations of his two sons, Omri and Gilad, for alleged sharp practice and bribe-taking could drive Sharon himself from office in 2004. And to compound his fears, the Israeli left which for the past two years has seemed terminally ill and politically irrelevant is showing faint signs of revival. Leading opposition figures such as Yossi Beilin, Amram Mitzna and Avraham Burg have joined with Palestinian moderates, led by Yasser Abed Rabbo, in drafting a detailed peace plan for a two-state solution the so-called Geneva Accords. The plan, the result of two years of secret negotiations funded by the Swiss government, is due to be signed formally in Geneva next month, putting flesh on the bones of the tentative agreements reached at Taba in January 2001. It represents everything that Sharon and his friends detest and which he has spent his life seeking to destroy. It provides for an Israeli withdrawal to the 1967 borders (with some marginal modifications) to allow for the emergence of a viable Palestinian state; some major settlements close to the Green Line to be annexed to Israel but those deep inside Palestinian territory to be evacuated; Jerusalem as a shared capital; Palestinian sovereignty over the Haram al-Sharif (Temple Mount); Israeli sovereignty over the Wailing Wall and the Jewish quarter of the Old City; and a major Palestinian concession the abandonment of the “right of return” to towns and villages lost in 1948. An international force would monitor implementation of the plan while radical Palestinian groups would be tamed and shut down. These Geneva Accords may, in the present climate, seem hopelessly utopian. They have no chance whatsoever of being implemented while the Sharon government, or anything resembling it, is in power. Their potential importance, however, lies in offering the Israeli public what it lacks and longs for most hope that the nightmare of killing and counter-killing can be brought to an end. In other words, a change in Washington, and a move back to the center by an Israeli public won over by a credible peace plan, could yet pose a threat to Sharon’s ambitions. He has reacted to the Geneva Accords with barely suppressed rage. “By what right,” he snorted, “are left-wing people proposing moves that Israel can never do, nor will ever do!” Sharon has always wanted one 100 percent of Palestine, an ambition which would have involved expelling most, if not all, of the Palestinian population of the West Bank to Jordan, which would then have become a Palestinian state. As the obstacles to such a project are formidable, Sharon has opted for something a shade more modest: the seizure of about 90 percent of historic Palestine, confining the Palestinians to some 10 percent of the overall territory behind the notorious wall. No doubt he calculates that, once the wall is finished, it will in due course come to be accepted by the international community, and by the Palestinians themselves, as defining Israel’s borders. Hence, his determination, and that of his American supporters, to move ahead with all possible speed while the regional and international environment is in their favor. Sharon’s major asset is President Bush himself. Backing off from engagement in the Arab-Israeli conflict, the Bush administration appears to have decided to leave Israel to manage the Palestine problem on its own terms. So much is clear from its veto of UN Resolutions condemning the wall and Sharon’s recent strike inside Syrian territory, from its silence over continued settlement expansion and from its failure to react to Israel’s massive destruction of Palestinian property at Rafah, on Gaza’s border with Egypt, which this week left 1,500 Palestinians homeless. As he nervously prepares for his election campaign, his ratings slipping in the polls, Bush’s collapse before Sharon must be judged one of the blackest pages in recent American history. It has provoked incredulity in Europe and, more ominously, bitter hatred of the United States in Muslim communities around the world. Yet, Sharon has much cause for satisfaction: While Israel faces no strategic threat, its enemies tremble. A shattered Iraq is under American occupation; Iran, facing great international pressure over its alleged nuclear weapons program, is wracked by internal conflicts between conservatives and reformers; the Arab Gulf, seemingly indifferent and content, lies under America’s military umbrella; Egypt, neutralized by its peace treaty with Israel and by America’s annual subsidy, hardly dares open its mouth in defense of the Palestinians; while Syria faces harsh and threatening pressure on all sides from Washington, now preparing to vote into law the economic and diplomatic boycotts enshrined in the Syria Accountability Act; and from Israel, which last week sent its planes to strike at Syria and seems ready to do so again. Sharon still thinks he can bludgeon the Palestinians into submission. The attack on the Palestinian camp near Damascus, together with Israel’s repeated incursions at Rafah, are clearly intended as warnings to Syria and Egypt to halt all support for the Palestinians or face the consequences. But Sharon has not yet found an answer to the suicide bombers who have traumatized the Israel public, ruined the economy, killed the tourist trade and cut off foreign investment. They are a profound embarrassment to Sharon, but he may think it a price worth paying. His priority is land, not security. That, he believes, will follow once the wall is built and the Palestinians surrender. The sources (The Daily Star).
Israel's Grand Design:
Leaders Crave Area from Egypt to Iraq by John Mitchell Henshaw
Nearly 34 years ago, an America-firster used The American Mercury magazine to warn of the danger posed by Zionism and its rule of Washington and the Mideast. John Henshaw wrote this article shortly after Israel laid claim to the annexed land during 1967 Arab-Israeli war. This article first appeared in the spring of 1968.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*
The metamorphosis of tiny Israel from a midget to a giant is in the making. The grand design of Judaic-Zionist expansionist doctrine is to seize all the oil-rich lands from the shores of the Euphrates to the banks of the Nile.
In defining the aims of Zionism, Hebrew scholar Levnoch Osman recently said: "In our eternal Book of Books (the Torah), the lofty ethical teachings of which are cherished by all mankind, the land of Israel is described not as a long, narrow strip of land with wavy, crooked borders, but as a state with broad natural borders. God has promised to Patriarch Abraham the following:
"I give unto them the land where they have sown their seed, from the river of Egypt unto the great river of Euphrates’ (Genesis 15:18). And so, in order to realize the words of this prophecy, the Israeli state had to continue, not in the borders it has today but within its broad historical boundaries."
And as far back as 1952 Moshe Dayan, the present Israeli defense minister, declared:
"Our task consists of preparing the Israeli army for the new war approaching in order to achieve our ultimate goal, the creation of an Israeli empire."
The British historian Arnold J. Toynbee, who served as an adviser on Near Eastern affairs to the British delegation at the Versailles Conference, in a newspaper article published in June last year stated the Zionist aims in these words:
We are Jews, the living representatives of Judah, one of the 12 tribes of Israel that conquered most of Palestine in the 13th century B.C. We held Judah’s share of the conquered territory for seven centuries, till we were deported by Nebuchadnezzer in 587 B.C. We were back again within less than half a century, and we then held Judea, once more, for the next 773 years, till we were evicted by the Romans in A.D. 135. We have never renounced our claim to the land of Israel. We have always hoped, believed, and proclaimed that we shall get this land back again. It is our land, we contend.
After another 1,883 years we did recover a foothold there in 1918, and during the half-century since then, by devoted hard work, ability and military valor, we have built up our present national State of Israel, and have inflicted three smashing defeats on the Arabs, who have been trying to evict us again.
We want to have a country of our own again, like other peoples and like our own ancestors. We also need to have a country of our own, because, since the conversion of the Roman empire to Christianity in the fourth century A.D., we have been penalized and persecuted by the Western Christian majority among whom we have had to live.
The persecution has culminated in the unprecedented crime of genocide, which has been committed against us in our lifetime by a Western people, the Germans, in Europe. We are not going to let the Arabs commit the same crime of genocide against us here, in our own land of Israel.
Genocide in Six-day War
Apologist Toynbee omitted mentioning the fact that the Jews themselves are currently engaged in genocide. During the Sis-Day War last summer, Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Dayan ordered Brig. Gen. Yesha’ahu Gavish, the Israeli commander of the Sinai campaign, to ruthlessly drive the hapless Egyptian troops into the Sinai Desert to die of thirst, hunger and heat. Temperature on the arid Sinai rise to more than 100 degrees during the day. For over two weeks thousand of wretched Egyptian stragglers wandered over the swirling wastes finally drop dead in their tracks.
U.S. reconnaissance planes flying on the perimeter of the Sinai Desert took hundreds of pictures of the stragglers and reported there were 50,000 Egyptians dead or dying on the desert at the time. The U.S. Air Force loaded 60,000 gallons of water in five-gallon jerry-cans on pallets and prepared to drop them in the area where stragglers were observed. However, Defense Secretary Robert McNamara ordered the projected mission of mercy halted after he received phone calls from White House foreign policy-planner Walt Rostow and UN Ambassador Arthur Goldberg.
This flagrant violation of the Geneva Convention on the treatment of prisoners of war amounted to genocide, designed to destroy a whole nation.
Newspaper reporters visiting the war zones in Syria and Jordan, reported that if one sniper in a village fired on Israeli troops, the whole village was destroyed including the women and children. Napalm is frequently used.
This systematic extermination is an ideological doctrine of Zionism. The leading exponent of genocide is the chauvinist Moshe Dayan, whom the Zionists have proclaimed a Biblical "messiah" on a white horse. Arrogant, boastful Gen. Yitzhak Rabin, chief of the Israeli General Staff, who plotted and executed the Six-Day blitzkrieg last June, is in direct charge of the projected expansionist program from the Euphrates to the Nile.
The scope of this ambitious scheme of territorial seizures and exploitation has been recognized by at least a few of our American military strategists for years. This writer recalls that a dozen years ago an Army lieutenant colonel, who was a student at the War College, confined that some of his instructors believed the Zionist expansionist policy would provide the spark to ignite World War III.
(Incidentally, the then lieutenant colonel is now one of the top commanding generals in Vietnam.)
By guile, treachery and bloodletting, the Zionists plot to annex all of Jordan, virtually all of Syria, half of Iraq and a large part of Saudi Arabia and all of the rich cotton lands of the Nile Valley. It would be a simpler matter then to grab Yemen, Aden, Muscat, Qatar and Oman with their rich oil development. Israel is already well advanced in the development of its first nuclear warhead.
According to the Zionists’ schedule of operations, within a decade the Israeli empire be the master of the Middle East and take its place as a nuclear superpower on equal footing with the Soviet Union and the United States. David Rockefeller’s Standard Oil Company will pay its royalties to the Israeli military usurpers instead of the Arab sheiks.
Fabulous Oil Reserves
The stakes are high in this traditionally British-protected region. The Persian Gulf and adjacent countries hold 70 percent of the non-communist world’s oil reserves and produce half of its oil output. British with-drawl from Aden creates a power vacuum that will inevitably be filled by Israel and the Soviet Union.
The British have expressed the pious hope that their withdrawal would galvanize the Arab rulers into dropping their feuds and really unite in a mutual defense pact. However, the spreading oil boom is intensifying the territorial ambitions of rival kingdoms, sultanates and sheikdoms. Iran is selling oil to Israel, another aggravating factor in Mideast tensions.
Like the tentacles of an octopus the Israeli armed forces struck out in all directions into Jordan, Syria and Egypt in Israel’s Six-Day aggression. Last June. Even when encountering no resistance, the Israeli armored forces abruptly halted at predetermined strategic terrain points; they had accomplished their mission in the first phase of the Zionist Grand Design of imperialistic conquest. It was time to stop and consolidate their gains rather than risk spreading their forces too thin.
Israeli leader Menachem Begin says:
"The return of even one bit of earth to the Arab would be a betrayal of the nation."
The grandiose idea of an Israeli empire controlling the Middle East is now for the first time arousing great popular enthusiasm among Jews everywhere in the world.
Officially Israel is continuing the pretense of keeping the door open to negotiations that might result in return of the conquered territory, in exchange for Arab recognition of Israel and peace treaty.
Jordan’s King Hussein has reportedly already made a secret and desperate offer to Israel: In exchange for the return of the West Bank of the Jordan River, Hussein agreed to demilitarize it, negotiate border adjustments and even waive his insistence upon regaining the Old City of Jerusalem. Israel rejected the offer. Israeli Minister of Labor Yigal Allon bluntly stated:
"The natural border of the country is the Jordan River – a border that would be established only if Israel kept the West Bank areas it took from Jordan."
Gen. Aluf Ezer Weizmann, second highest-ranking officer in the Israeli army, is even more adamant: "We shall stay where we are and bring in Jews. We now have the unusual opportunity to consolidate the state for the Jewish people and help prevent future wars."
"If there is a fourth war," Defense Minister Moshe Dayan gloats, "we are in a position to win more decisively than ever."
And he warned that in the "fourth war" the great cities of Cairo, Damascus and Amman will be annihilated. This is in conformity with the genocidal plan.
Zionist have their eyes set on all of the land between the Nile and the Euphrates. The plan for a "Greater Israel" is as old as Zionism itself.
Israelis bitterly complain that along with the occupied territory that is three times the size of Israel, they have inherited its population of 1,330,000 Arabs.
Aliyah – voluntary relocation to Israel – has been a flop as far as Western Jews are concerned – few of them want to go to the Holy Land of their forefathers. The majority of Jews now in Israel are from Asia and Africa.
The System of government in Israel is a mixture of theocracy and gerontocracy. Full citizenship requires membership in the Jewish religion and Jewish ancestry. Israeli authorities refuse to accept Arabs or "Gentiles" (non-Jews) as full citizens with equal civil, political, and economic rights. Militant Zionists frankly admit that Israel and neighboring Arab nations cannot coexist. They claim that the incompatibility is due to ideological fanaticism. However, the Arab oil lands are fabulously rich.
"We must take steps leading to a long-range consolidation, lest we be considered a temporary, transient factor in the occupied areas," declares Israel Galili, minister without portfolio in the Israeli Cabinet.
The Zionists have invented the term "coercive noninterference" in explaining how they force the subjugated Arabs to cooperate with their conquerors. When the mayor of Nablus announced that he would resign rather than front for the Jews, the Israeli military officers told him that no one would be appointed to replace him, which would result in utter chaos. They mayor had second thoughts, stayed and obeyed the Jewish military commanders. Hundreds of similar examples could be cited.
Arabs Fear Genocide
"The Middle East today is dominated by raw, naked, savage, animal fear. The Arab nations are driven by the fear of mass death, by the fear of Israel’s genocidal intentions toward them. Israel, by bringing in immigrants from all over the world, has upset the demographic balance of the Middle East.
"The first basic fact about populations is that they multiply. They population of Israel is increasing, and the populations of the Arab nations are increasing. In the conflict between populations, either Arabs or Jews must someday end up being driven into arid desert wastes which will not support them, where they will find relief only in the oblivion of death. Israel means to kill the Arab populations and to occupy their lands. The Arabs, driven by fear of death, react powerfully. They seek the protection of a powerful nation, Russia, to which they will become tributary in return for protection…
"For the free world, this is a practically irretrievable disaster," says Benjamin H. Freedman.
We might well rationalize all this as strictly none of our business except that hundred of millions of American foreign aid dollars are being spend for the enrichment of the international Zionist network extending from Tel Aviv to Paris, London and New York. The Israelis are already pumping oil from Egyptian wells and splitting the profits with Rockefeller’s Standard Oil combine. This is only the prelude.
Now for the first time Soviet Russia is successfully penetrating the oil-rich Mideast countries. The Russians have made agreements to explore for oil in Iraq, Iran and Egypt. They have extended bids for cooperative ventures to Algeria, Syria and Kuwait. The agreement with Iraq provides for development of oil reserves in an area taken away from Western companies.
Most of the Arab oil countries are starting oil firms to give them a stronger hold on their petroleum reserves and a bigger bit on profits. They have also recently hiked their royalties they get from the big Anglo-American oil firms.
The Soviets furnish the technical know-how to the Arab oil industry and work out world marketing agreement with the Arab rulers. The Soviet naval fleet is standing in the Mediterranean. The Kremlin has launched an aggressive campaign to establish a protectorate over the Mideast oil lands. Russia finally has a firm grip on Egypt. Syria is now totally dependent on Soviet weapons and the protective arm of Moscow. The Soviets have a facility in Latakia.
Yemen is receiving Soviet arms, Russian advisers are training its army, and Soviet armed forces are establishing base facilities in Yemen. After all the millions the U.S. gave Iran in foreign aid, the ungrateful shah (who has $300 million stashed away in Swiss banks) is co-operating with the Soviets in construction of a natural gas pipeline that would feed Iranian gas to parts of Russia not easily served by Russian gas.
The sub-rosa partnership between Zionism and communism is still a fact. As Israel drives the Arabs into the arms of the Kremlin, Israel expands, fulfilling a grand design and an aggressive plan agreed upon years ago. And like the Arabs, Americans are helpless victims in this international crime.
The late John Henshaw was chief legman for columnist Drew Pearson, who later broke with Pearson. At that time, Henshaw’s expenses were paid by the Anti-Defamation League, a lobby for Israel, which had a "special relationship" with Pearson. Thus Henshaw’s Middle East insights are unique.
Life under Larsen revealed by Antarctic survey
Monday February 26, 05:00 PM By Catherine Brahic
A voyage to explore the marine life beneath a vast sheet of Antarctic sea ice has enjoyed great success, uncovering new species and terrain ranging from barren to teeming with fast-growing life. The barely known ecosystems below Antarctic ice sheets are described as "the last marine frontier" by researchers. The Polarstern expedition found a new species of giant crustacean and sea-cucumbers that had previously only been seen in the deep sea in any number. View a gallery of the incredible (Advertisement) creatures revealed . The investigation was made possible by the collapse of the Larsen ice-sheet in northeast Antarctica, which disintegrated in two stages. First, Larsen A fell apart in 1995. Then, in 2002, a massive chunk of ice, 3250 square kilometres in area and 220 metres thick, broke off. The disintegration of Larsen B made headlines worldwide and was seen as a sign of the dramatic consequences of global warming (see Giant Antarctic ice sheet breaks off ). For biologists, it opened a realm that had been virtually inaccessible. The area under Larsen B has been capped by ice since the last ice age. "The break-up of these ice shelves opened up huge, near pristine portions of the ocean floor, sealed off from above for at least 5000 years, and possibly up to 12,000 years in the case of Larsen B," says Julian Gutt, a marine ecologist at Germany's Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research and chief scientist on the Polarstern expedition. "Until now, scientists have glimpsed life under Antarctica's ice shelves only through drill holes." As part of a new Census of Antarctic Marine Life (CAML), Gutt led a 10-week voyage to the area which used to lie under Larsen A and B. The seabed varied in depth, between 100 metres and 850 m beneath the surface. In order to explore, the researchers sent down a remotely-operated submarine which captured video footage and collected samples. The researchers discovered extremely varied environments in their explorations, which concluded on 30 January. In shallower areas, where the several-hundred metre thick ice shelf had scraped along the bottom, the seabed was barren and carved with parallel grooves left by the glaciers as they moved out to sea. In other areas, the seabed teamed with life. Gutt believes some of these animals and plants have moved into the area since the collapse of the ice shelves. He mentions the great number and density of fast-growing sea-squirts - transparent tube-like animals that attach themselves to the seafloor. Under Larsen B, the sea-squirts are about five years old, which corresponds closely with when the shelf collapsed. He was also stunned to find a great number of sea cucumbers, normally found 2000 m beneath the surface. The researchers are uncertain why these species were found in such shallow waters, but note that both the deep sea and the underside of ice shelves have very poor resources in common. "The sea cucumbers belong to that fauna which I believe were found originally under the ice shelf," says Gutt. Small clusters of dead clamshells on the ocean floor suggested the past presence of a very rare "cold seep" - a seabed vent which would have spewed methane and sulphides. Such vents can create temporary habitats for life in otherwise barren environments. But when such seeps run dry, the communities that rely on them starve. Among the potential new species found during the trip were: - 15 new shrimp-like amphipod species, including one that was 10 centimetres long, making it one of largest ever seen in Antarctica - Four new species of cnidarians - organisms related to coral, jelly fish and sea anemones - Two new species of octopus The researchers have brought specimens back and will now compare them to known species to see if they are indeed new. CAML is run by the Census of Marine Life. It has 13 expeditions planned during the International Polar Year, which launches on 1 March 2007. The Polarstern expedition brought together 52 researchers from 14 countries. Check back later for videos from the voyages.

An eight-year-old boy who weighs 14 stone is waiting to find out if he is to be taken into care.Connor McCreaddie from Tyneside is so overweight he can hardly walk and social services are deciding whether it amounts to child abuse. His mother Nicola McKeown, 35, has blamed doctors for failing to help the family.Connor weighed 15 stone 8lb - four times the weight of a healthy child of his age - before Christmas but has lost 1 stone 7lb since beginning an intensive exercise regime and swapping junk food for healthy alternatives two months ago.Ms McKeown, 35, sought help from professionals and the family have been getting assistance from health workers and a dietician. The family face a child protection conference with North Tyneside Council to discuss Connor's progress in losing weight. The last resort would be for social workers to place him in care but his mother is hopeful this will not happen. She said she had received little help from doctors and urged social workers to allow the family to look after Connor. She said: "I think it's really terrible. They've tried to say that I've neglected Connor and he should come under the child abuse Act, and I think it's really disgusting."Through Connor's weight gain there's been no-one there to step in. He's been going to doctors and stuff, he's been getting weighed, and no-one's actually stepped in and said `Look, there's a problem here, we have to get it sorted.'"So I asked for help and it's been offered but it hasn't been given yet."She said removing Connor into care would be "disastrous" for him."Taking him away from his family when he needs them to help him would be, I think, disastrous for Connor. I think it would make him worse."
Jade Makes Surprise Visit To India
Monday February 26, 03:09 PM
Jade Goody has spoken exclusively to Sky News after making a surprise visit to India, following the Celebrity Big Brother race row.
The star made headlines around the world when she allegedly racially bullied Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty in the reality TV house.
Correspondent Alex Crawford tracked down Goody in New Delhi. Looking relaxed, she said: "Obviously I've said my apologies.
I'm here on a private visit and I'm having meetings with certain people.
"She arrived in India declaring she was "trying to put the Big Brother stuff behind me".
The star - who chose to travel on the Indian airliner Jet Airways - said she had already spent the first few hours of her trip travelling
around the capital as a tourist. "I am here on a strictly private visit," she told Sky News. "I could have had my entire trip paid for and
the people travelling with me could have been paid for but I didn't want that."I am paying for the trip and all the expenses myself. I don't want to be seen to be making money out of what happened."Asked whether she was here to do a deal with an Indian television company in an attempt to rehabilitate her floundering career, her agent Sally Andrews said: "No, this is not a business trip. It is strictly private."They also denied they would be meeting Indian politicians during the four-day visit
On being asked whether the row over her treatment of Shetty had "blown over", the former dental nurse said she didn't want to "make light of what had happened" but things were getting better. She said: "'I only got two hate mail (after the show). People are being all right to me." Goody and her agent were returning from visiting a monument in New Delhi and remarked there had been a "good response" from the Indian public to her presence. At the height of the row, the Indian tourist board in London issued an open invitation to her to come to the country to find out for herself about the culture and the people. Goody has been to India before - to do research on her own brand perfume called Ssssh! The bottling factory is in Gujarat - about 100 miles from Mumbai.

Mills' Dancing appearance infuriates the disabled
Sir Paul McCartney's estranged wife Heather Mills' forthcoming appearance on US TV show Dancing With The Stars has angered a disabled group in her native Britain, who claim her ability to dance means she is able-bodied. Mills wears prosthetic limb after losing her left leg below the knee following a 1993 road accident in London. After the charity campaigner confirmed she would be a contestant on the show next month, the Federation Of Disabled People claim she has no right to use the blue disabled badge on her Mercedes car, which gives users priority parking in public places and in car parks. The Federation's spokesperson Kathy Gordon says, "Clearly she has mobility so she should refrain from using the badge. It's not fair on other disable people."
Al Jazeera, in English A look at the baffling new force in global news.

Al Jazeera, in English A look at the baffling new force in global news. by Louis Wittig 01/04/2007 12:00:00 AM Increase Font Size | Printer-Friendly | Email a Friend | Respond to this article TUNE IN around 4 o'clock Eastern and the news is feeding from the London anchor desk. The ticker is crawling: DR Congo Loser to Challenge Results . . . Netherlands Moves to Ban Burqa. Co-anchors Nick Clarke and Barbara Serra, in an urbane British accent that osmoses credibility, lead into the hour's top story: Darfur. Break for commercials. Then back, with a plume of soaring, faintly New Age music that's as clean, familiar, and forgettable as a Marriott lobby. The only thing unfamiliar is the logo in the corner: a glowing golden bulb of flowery Arabic script. Welcome to Al Jazeera English. If you're in the United States, you can only watch Al Jazeera English on a computer monitor. Cable and satellite providers have been hesitant to carry the channel, so for now it streams from the Internet. Depending on your connection speed, the video may sporadically freeze or pixilate. And then there is the cognitive dissonance. PLANNED FOR YEARS by its Arabic-language parent as a direct competitor to the likes of CNN International, Al Jazeera English went live on November 15, and, depending on who you ask, either started bringing fresh perspectives to a public fed on developed country-centric news or uncapped a fire hydrant of jihadist propaganda. The new network's Washington anchor, former Nightline correspondent Dave Marash, urges critics to tune in and judge for themselves. But watching only confuses the matter further. THERE'S A DISTINCTIVE new-network smell to Al Jazeera English. In the run-up to launch, network executives lined up big, polished journalism names such as Sir David Frost and Riz Khan. Four anchor desks across the globe--in Washington, London, Doha, and Kuala Lumpur--rotate throughout the broadcast day, each giving their respective regional stories top billing. The plurality of on-air personalities appear to be British. Advertisers haven't moved in en masse. Most of the break space is filled with house promo spots, where confidant voiceovers promise "direct and fearless journalism" and "every angle, every side" of the story, and that "now with Al Jazeera, ordinary people have a voice." Aside from a fuzzily Third World orientation, there's nothing contentious about the vast majority of the programming. Live, looping coverage starts with the same top stories playing on most other news nets. Below the top line are stories that AJE's competitors probably wouldn't mention (i.e. election results from Mauritania). The interview shows do not feature Keffiyehed Islamic scholars calling for a thousand more bin Ladens: The line-up of guests on Riz Khan's One on One, for instance, includes Nobel-winning economists and Bollywood stars. The net effect is less than revolutionary. If not as joltingly distinct as promised, this is still the face of Al Jazeera that its defenders like to defend. Their line is that the network's Arabic-language parent is a world class press that breaks taboos and represents views of the Arab street; AJE translates those, and other perspectives from the "global south" into the world's lingua franca. The implicit suggestion is that everyone is better off for it. ON ONE OF THE DAYS I was watching, the London desk had breaking news from Gaza. A hundred-plus Hamas gunmen had formed a human shield around their leader's house to ward off an Israeli air strike. This began a string of short reports on recent events in the Strip: The U.N. Assembly had voted overwhelmingly to condemn Israel; accompanying footage showed Palestinian bodies. The next item was Israel's bombing of a building that housed (AJE authoritatively asserted) a charity. The broadcast made no mention either of what the Israelis believed the building contained or why the Israelis were attacking in Gaza in the first place.
One of AJE's promos boasts that its only concern is airing what's newsworthy, be it a Bush press conference or a bin Laden video. It was odd then that the Gaza report closed with Hamas Prime Minister Haniyeh ("his government isolated by the Americans") meeting with the former mayor of Santa Cruz, California (pop. 54,593), who incidentally--the cameras got a clear sound bite to go out on--fully supports the Palestinian cause. The next day, AJE aired a short segment on the Islamic Army of Iraq. The publicity video showed disciplined rows of masked men drilling: bursting out from the cover of tall reeds and scanning the horizon with their AK-47s. An off-camera voice described how they fight all foreigners. Their tactics of kidnapping and releasing "grisly videos" were noted as "effective intimidation technique[s]." A group spokesman, his face obscured, gave a boasting quote but doesn't field any questions. If this isn't propaganda for America's enemies, that's only because the definition of propaganda in today's constantly shifting media environment isn't perfectly clear. What is uniquely disturbing about AJE is the delivery: Right after the weather and sports scores, they give reports depicting Hamas gunmen as victims and the Islamic Army of Iraq as Arab minutemen. And as the channel cuts back to ideologically ho-hum stories on Ben Affleck's latest project, it's easy to see how unconsciously this all might be digested. Of course, even this is different from the original flavor of Al Jazeera, whose broadcasts incite violence against Americans, whose panel show guests suggest that the Nobel Prize is a Zionist plot, and whose reporters are doing time in Spanish jail, convicted of aiding al Qaeda. AJE supporters try to claim that the new network is independent from the original Al Jazeera. But as Cliff Kincaid, of Accuracy in Media, notes, both Al Jazeera and Al Jazeera English are funded directly by the emir of Qatar, and three of the four top managers at the English-language channel come from the Arabic one. TAKING A HANDS-OFF APPROACH to Al Jazeera English is, Kincaid continues, akin to giving Tokyo Rose an anchor's seat on NBC radio during World War II. This is not an uncommon reference for the network's critics and it sounds vaguely right. Only Tokyo Rose probably never had U.S. Navy spokesmen on her show to discuss Guadalcanal. Al Jazeera English, on its Inside Iraq program, does. Eventually, the questions that proliferate after an hour of watching AJE can't be contained: What's an enemy's perspective and what's enemy propaganda? How do you classify an outlet that airs deceptive and terrorist-promoting segments, but only for about five minutes of every hour? What if some of its reports have a pro-Western tilt? Does a balance of biases constitute journalistic integrity? If it isn't like having Tokyo Rose on NBC, then perhaps watching AJE is like viewing East German TV news during the Cold War. (It's fun to imagine a channel between NBC Nightly News and the CBS Evening News where a bald, colorless man in a 20-year-old suit delivers the day's top story: Central Committee chairman visits Tractor Factory 225.) Anything like East German TV would instantly discredit itself. But Al Jazeera English isn't really in this ballpark. Partially it's because of the money and the polish. Partially--this is a big caveat for propaganda--it's because AJE does report actual news. Perhaps it should come as no surprise that Al Jazeera English is beyond historical comparison. After all, the war on Islamist terrorists is also, as Americans have been oft reminded, a new kind of conflict. One that requires us to, simultaneously, hunt down and kill terrorists, aid earthquake victims in Pakistan, prevent nuclear proliferation, liberalize world trade, promote women's rights, suppress the Afghan opium trade, imprison terrorists, conserve oil, and win hearts and minds, just to name a few imperatives. The problem isn't that Americans don't understand the various imperatives of this new conflict; or that hawks think the war is A while doves think it's B. It's that most every reasonable person believes that it is A, B, C, D, and E at the same time, with the order of importance changing from day to day depending largely on the news. Without a unified, coherent understanding of what the war on Islamist terror is and isn't, what counts as propaganda in the war--and what's just a free press--will be blurry. Consider the example of a recent Saturday on AJE: Jane Dutton delivered the news from Doha, where the first reports were that female candidates for Bahrain's parliament were doing surprisingly well in the first race they have been allowed to run in. Fifteen minutes later, a news magazine called Listening Post came on. It contained a segment pondering whether reporters in the Palestinian territories were right to embellish and dramatize images of local suffering, or whether Israeli atrocities are so egregious as to need no embellishment. Louis Wittig is a media writer in New York. Correction appended 1/4/07: The article originally misidentified AJE broadcaster Sir David Frost as "Sir Martin Frost."

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has confirmed a 39-year-old Australian citizen has been arrested in Iraq.
The man of Iraqi origin was detained by coalition authorities in Baghdad in mid-October.
"He is being held as a security internee under the authority of The United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1637 for engaging in anti-coalition activity,'' a DFAT spokeswoman told AAP today.
She said Australian consular officials met with the man on November 10 and spoke to him by telephone on December 15.
"He is well," the spokeswoman said.
The Australian embassy in Baghdad had been in contact with US authorities in relation to the detention and officials in Canberra were in touch with the man's family, she said.
However, DFAT could not confirm reports today that the man was Warya Kanie, an Iraqi Kurd refugee who came to Adelaide about three years ago with his young daughter.
The Weekend Australian reported that Mr Kanie left Adelaide about seven months ago after gaining Australian citizenship, telling his family he was going to look for a new wife in Iraq.
Meanwhile, DFAT has advised Australians not to travel to Iraq as consular assistance is limited, particularly outside Baghdad.
Labor calls on government to help
Labor Leader Kevin Rudd said the Australian government should be giving the man as much support as possible.
"Every Australian abroad who finds himself in trouble deserves legitimate consular support from the Australian government,'' Mr Rudd told reporters on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland today.
"That's partly why we pay our taxes, to make sure that when you're overseas at any given time you run into trouble with the law or other sorts of trouble, that there are appropriate levels of Australian government support abroad.

Meteor Threat at the Eglinton
As some of you may have read in the paper, an imminent collision between an approaching meteor and a large mirror in the reception area has forced the closure of this hostel. It is now less than an hour to the end of the final AM shift. The last CD is spinning at the same rate as the meteor - a deliberate ploy. Elizabeth Brown, or LIZ!) has completed her farewell lap of honour round the Crescent in her wee car at roughly one quarter of the speed of rotation of the CD. The freezers are being counted below, the last cash-up has prematurely gone to the bank. Mr Ballantyne was lifted carefully down from the wall. Breakfast was a bit of a Tortilla Special thanks to Xavi, to mark the closure. Blood poured from fake neck woiunds as Hallowe'en was acknowledged, while Durham University law student Ma Yue, from Dailin in NE China, was suitably surprised to have her 23rd biirthday marked by a chocolate cake and singing when she got back from extracting a German tourist visa from next door. The postman left his bag and refuses to contemplate 14 new flats with door entry systems. The afternoon tea arrives on a tray as Ian McInnes(maintenance) maintains the great tradition of hospitality (As long as one of us remains standing, etc, etc). Amaya and Jamie-Lee (this morning's real live Hallowe'en kitchen witch) get back from the Greggs run to keep the dismantling team going. The bedsheet box has seen its last frayed strip of used bedding, the kitchen gas rings have heard their last encouraging spark. The countdown continues. Twenty minutes to three, the witching hour. Marjolaine sits on the tartan carpet with her cats eye lenses still in from the breakfast bloodfest. Nobody ate the sausages. Sandy heads to the Eglinton Account at the bank for the last time. The phone has rung just the once in the last hour, a Newcastle football team hoping to book as they've done every year. They don't believe what they're being told but can't see what we can see. The bedplan is done 0 days ahead, but that will do fine as there's no arrivals list. Anybody want to buy a coloured pencil? But time flies when you're enjoying yourself. A quick glance at the clock tells me it is already three. Editors of the USA Weekly News Tom and Chris chat with David Beckham and Michael Moore about their investigation into the sale by the Scottish Youth Hostels Association of the Eglinton and Brunsfield Hostels to friendly developers who are turning these historic heritage Edinburgh hostels that were donated for the benefit of the youth as affordable accomodation to promote Scotland. The developers expect to make over £13 million pounds profit from each building by turning these historic buildings into 30 flats and selling them for £1 million each. The developers have paid about £2 million for each building which should show them a net profit of about £25 million pounds. It is believed is that the directors of the Scottish Youth Hostels Association will receive a large payment from the developers for their help in transfering these valuable properties to the developers at a fraction of their real value as development sites in the most pretigious part of Edinburgh the Capital City of Scotland.
Walter R B Ballantyre-
Photo supplied to the USA Weekly News by founding members of the SYHA who were personal friends of the late Walter Ballantyre who were asked to keep an eye on the SYHA to make sure that the SYHA should be true to its basic purpose of giving people of limited means the opportunity of enjoying the Scottish countryside.
Walter R B Ballantyre who donated all the over 70 hostels in Scotland to the Scottish Yourth Hostels Association, who gave more than fifty years of distiguished voluntary service to the Scottish Youth Hostels Association (SYHA) and who between 1935 and 1988, held successively, the offices of Assistant Honorary Sedretary, Honoroary Secretary, Vive Chairman, Chairman and Honorary President. And Chariman from 1958 to 1975 he exerted a wise and moderating influence upon the affairs of the association and was always concerned that it should be true to its basic purpose of giving people of limited means the opportunity of enjoying the Scottish countryside. In recognition of this service to his own Association and to the wider international youth hostel movement, he was elected as Honary President of the Scottish Youth Hostels Association (S.Y.H.A.) in 1975 and was awarded the Richard Schirrmann Medal in 1978 and the Order of the British Empire in 1982.
Now Walter Ballantyre has died in 1988, a new breed of directors with completely different aims have emerged. Their names are Victor Hugh Bourne- director appointed 23-10-06; Paul Goldfinch -director appointed 23-10-06; Judith Roxburg director appointed 23-10-06 and Margo Sarah Paterson-secretary appointed 23-10-06. It appears from interviewing staff and members that the aims of these new directors is to turn the original company company known as the Scottish Youth Hostels Association (SYHA) with over 70 vary valuable freehold hostels through Scotland into a private company and form a new company called the SYHA which is effectively a shell comany with no assets for the public image. The original company with hundreds and millions in real estate assets which owns the over 70 Hostels would then be a private company controlled by these greedy people who want to take the use of these assets away from the member sand the wider community and keep them for themselves. It appears that they have moved a long way in carrying out these aims. They have on the 23-10--06 formed a new not for profit company called the Scottish Youth Hostels Association. To do this it appears they lust have changed the name of the old company from the SYHA to another name to make this name available in the United Kingdom. It is impossible to have two companies with the same name in the United Kingdom. So what happened to the original SYHA that Watler Ballantyre formed, donated over 70 freehold hostels to and proudly excerted a moderating influence over for many years to make sure the SYHA would stay true to its basic purpose of giving people of limited means the opportunity of enjoying the Scottish countryside. The directors of the original SYHA, now called another name appear to have tried to sell two of the most valuable properties in the besy part of Edinburgh as cheap as they can to property developers friends who's are planning to turn them into flats with a potential £25 million profit to the developers. It is beleived the Eglinton Hostel and the Brunsfield Hostel have been sold for about £2 million each when there was an offer for about £5 million pounds each. It seems strange that they ywould put these two properties up for tender and accept les that have the price from one buyer than another buyer was prepared to pay. Also it is interesting to note that the other buyer offering £5 million pounds each for these two properties was a genuine not for profit public company who was wanting to keep the two Hostels run in the way they were for the last 50 years to keep their use true to the original basic purpose of giving people of limited means the opportunity of enjoying the Scottish countryside. It apears that hte game plan by the new directors is to sell valuable development properties belonging to the non for profit company as cheap as they can to friendly property developers, and use the cash to purchase other modern properties at the highest price they can from friendly property developers. This would allow the directors of the SYHA to work with these friendly development companies to make millions of pounds in profits for them selves and over a period of time water down the assets of the original SYHA which appears to no longer exist in it's original form. There now is new SYHA formed on the 23-10-06 which has no assets and no income and will be used as a public image that the SYHA is continuing its good work in Scotland. The new company appears the be leaving the assets behind in the old company for the directors and their associates of the SYHA to do what they like with. The USA Weekly News has written to the directors of the newly formed SYHA and Michael Pringle a member of the Scottish Parliament in an attempt to gain some open and frank answers regarding what appears to be a massive fraud on the 30,000 members of the SYHA who have paid their membership money in the belief that they would have continued use the Eglinton and Brunfield Hostels in Edinburgh for many years to come. This appears to have come to a sudden end, unless there is something done to stop Mr Victor Hugh Bourne, Mr Paul Goldfinch, Judith Roxburgh and Sarah Paterson and their associates from carrying out their aims.
At this stage the directors have refused to speak to the USA Weekly News has not even heard from their lawyers to try and stop the media group publishing this information to the world wide community.
Weekly News about these serious allegations against them, which implies to our media group and the general public that these allegations are true. The USA Michael Moore:Stupid White Men :
Online Chapters"The Sad and Sordid Whereabouts of bin Cheney and bin Bush"
A Free Online Chapter addition to "Stupid White Men" by Michael Moore Part One: "What Does a 99-cent Bic Lighter Tell Us About the Bush War on Terrorism?" On September 22, 2001, just 11 days after the terrorist attacks in New York and Arlington, I had to fly. I had actually wanted to fly on September 11, and in fact had a ticket on the 3:00pm American Airlines flight from LAX to JFK. As we all know, that flight never made it off the ground as hours earlier four California-bound flights, two on American and two on United, were hijacked as part of a coordinated suicide mission to attack the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon outside Washington, DC. Stranded in Los Angeles, my wife and I (out there for the annual Prime Time Emmy Awards for our series, "The Awful Truth"), were awakened that morning by my wife's mother, calling us from Flint at 6:15 a.m., L.A. time. I answered the phone and heard her say that "New York was under attack, New York is at war." I remember thinking, "So what's new," but she suggested we immediately turn on the TV. I fumbled for the remote and switched on the hotel room TV. And there it was. The twin towers on fire, black smoke billowing upward. "OK," I thought, "a really bad fire." But then they ran the replay from 15 minutes earlier, of the second plane hitting the south tower. This wasn't an accident. We tried to call our daughter in New York. The phone lines weren't allowing any calls. We tried calling our friend, Joanne Doroshow, who works a few blocks from the towers. Again, the lines were jammed. A horrible panic started settling inside me. Finally, I reached Joanne's office. A woman answered, frantic. I asked if Joanne was there. "NO!" she shouted. "She's not here! We have to go! Ohmygod!" She dropped the phone and I heard a loud roar, like a train. My wife said, "Look at the TV." I did, and I saw from L.A. what I was listening to over the phone: the collapse of the south tower. It would be another four hours before we were able to reach our daughter, and seven hours before Joanne calls us, safe inside her apartment (she had ducked into a building just in time as the cloud of debris rained its way down the street). That night, as we watched the images repeated on the TV, a ticker began running the names of some of the dead who had been on the planes. Along the bottom of the screen came the name, "William Weems." A friend of ours the next morning confirmed that this was, in fact, the same Bill Weems, a line producer from Boston with whom we had recently filmed a batch of humorous TV spots targeting the tobacco companies. Bill was on the Boston-to-L.A. plane. He died as the jet, traveling at 586 miles per hour, slammed into the south tower. He left behind a wife and 7-year old daughter. It was all so unbelievably horrific. The airports were closed and all planes were now grounded. I found a Hertz dealer who would rent me a mini-van for $1,700 -- and 43 hours later we pulled out of our hotel on the Pacific Ocean and began our 2,990-mile journey home to our apartment in New York City. Somewhere around Oklahoma City, the airports were all open again, but my wife did not want to ditch the mini-van and get on a plane. So we continued on home for the next few days, the first ever trip each of us had made driving coast to coast. It was, as it turned out, well worth it, as it gave us a chance to gauge the reaction of average citizens, especially as we passed through Bush and Ashcroft country (The internet letters I wrote – and read – from the road can be found on my website). By September 22, I had no choice but to get back on a plane. I had been scheduled to give a talk in San Antonio, and so off I went on an American flight out of Newark. At the airport there was a newly, hastily put-together list of all the items that I could NOT bring aboard the plane. The list was long and bizarre. The list of banned items included: No guns. (Obviously) No knives. (Ditto) No boxcutters. (Certainly now justified) No toenail clippers. (What?) No knitting needles. (Huh?) No crotchet hooks. (Now, wait a minute!) No sewing needles. No mace. No leaf blowers. (OK, now it's personal) No corkscrews. No letter openers. No dry ice. The list went on and on. A lot of the items made good sense. I wasn't quite sure if terrorists also made quilts in their spare time, and I guess I must have missed the terrorist incident where some poor bastards smuggled dry ice aboard a plane (were they trying to keep their Popsicles cold until they ate them and then used the sticks for their attack?). Frankly, I was a little freaked-out about flying so soon after 9-11 and I guess there was just no way I was going to fly without a weapon for my protection. So I took the New York Yankees-signed baseball that Mayor Giuliani had given me on "TV Nation," put it in a sock, and – presto! Whip that baby upside somebody's head, and they're going to take a little nap. Note to budding terrorfuckers: If you try something on a flight I'm on, I'll Clemens ya. That, or the smell from my ratty sock, is going to do you in.
Though I now felt "safe" with my makeshift weapon, as I continued to fly through the fall and winter, I did NOT feel safe being greeted at airport security by weekend warriors from the National Guard holding empty M-16s and looking like they shop in the same "special needs" department at K-Mart which I visit from time to time. More importantly, though, I kept noticing something strange. The guy in front of me, while emptying his pockets into the little plastic tray to run through the x-ray machine, would take out his butane lighter or matchbook, toss them into the tray, then pick them up on the other side -- in full view of security. At first I thought this was a mistake until I looked at the list of banned items again -- and saw that butane lighters and matchbooks were NOT on the forbidden list. Then came December 22, 2001. Richard Reid, on an American Airlines flight from Paris to Miami, attempted to light his shoes on fire, using matches. His shoes, the police said, contained a plastic explosive and, had some passengers and flight attendants not taken quick action to restrain him, he would have been able to blow the entire plane out of the sky. But his lighter would not light the shoes fast enough, and everyone survived. I was sure after this freakish incident that the lighters and matches would surely be banned. But, as my book tour began in February, there they were, the passengers with their Bic lighters and their books of matches. I asked one security person after another why these people were allowed to bring devices which could start a fire on board the plane, especially after the Reid incident. No one, not a single person in authority or holding an unloaded automatic weapon, could or would give me answer. My simple question was this: If all smoking is prohibited on all flights, then why does ANYONE need their lighters and matches at 30,000 feet -- while I am up there with them?! And why is the one device that has been used to try and blow up a plane since 9-11 NOT on the banned list? No one has used toenail clippers to kill anyone on Jet Blue, and no one has been blowing away the leaves in the aisle of the Delta Connection flight to Tupelo. BUT SOME FRUITCAKE DID USE A BUTANE LIGHTER TO TRY AND KILL 200 PEOPLE ON AMERICAN AIRLINES FLIGHT #63. And this did nothing to force the Bush Administration to do something about it. I began asking this question in front of audiences on my book tour. And it was on a dark and rainy night in Arlington, Virginia, at the Ollsson's Bookstore a couple miles from the Pentagon that I got my answer. After asking my Bic lighter question in my talk to the audience, I sat down to sign the books for the people in line. A young man walks up to the table, introduces himself, and lowering his voice so no one can hear, tells me the following: "I work on the Hill. The butane lighters were on the original list prepared by the FAA and sent to the White House for approval. The tobacco industry lobbied the Bush administration to have the lighters and matches removed from the banned list. Their customers (addicts) naturally are desperate to light up as soon as they land, and why should they be punished just so the skies can be safe? The lighters and matches were removed from the forbidden list. I was stunned. I knew there had to be some strange reason why this most obvious of items had not been banned. Could the Bush mob be so blatant in their contempt for the public's safety? How could they do this, and at the same time, issue weekly warnings about the "next terrorist threat"? Would they really put Big Tobacco's demands ahead of people's lives? Yes, of course, the answer has always been YES but not now, not in a time of national crisis, not NOW, so soon after the worst domestic mass murder in U.S. history! Unless there was no real threat at all. The hard and difficult questions must be asked: Is the "War on Terrorism" a ruse, a concoction to divert the citizens' attention? Accept, if you will for just a moment, that as truly despicable as George W. Bush is, he would not be so evil as to help out his buddies in tobacco land that that would be worth suffering through another 9-11. Once you give the man that – and for once I am asking you to do just that – once you admit that not even he would allow the murder of hundreds or thousands more just so Marlboro addicts can light up outside the terminal, then a whole other door opens – and that door, my friends, leads to the Pandora's Box of 9-11, a rotten can of worms that many in the media are afraid to open for fear of where it might lead, of just how deep the stench goes. What if there is no "terrorist threat?" What if Bush and Co. need, desperately need, that "terrorist threat" more than anything in order to conduct the systematic destruction they have launched against the U.S. constitution and the good people of this country who believe in the freedoms and liberties it guarantees? Do you want to go there? I do. I have filed a Freedom of Information Act demand to the FAA, asking that they give to me all documents pertaining to the decisions that were made to allow deadly butane lighters and books of matches on board passenger planes. I am not optimistic about what the results of this will be. And let's face it – it's just one small piece of the puzzle. It is, after all, just a 99-cent Bic lighter. But, friends, I have to tell you, over the years I have found that it is PRECISELY the "little stories" and the "minor details" that contain within them the LARGER truths. Perhaps my quest to find out why the freedom to be able to start a fire on board a plane-full of citizens is more important than yours or my life will be in vain. Or maybe, just maybe, it will be the beginning of the end of this corrupt, banal administration of con artists who shamelessly use the dead of that day in September as the cover to get away with anything. The latest News from your ABC News Death of the crocodile hunterLive Video Footage of Steve Irwin Mike dolan remembers TV naturalist Steve Irwin, killed by a stingray today Crikey, welcome to Crocodile country," was the sort of phrase that made Steve Irwin famous. That and the fact that he could wrestle a 12ft crocodile with great bravado in front of a camera. Today, however, the khaki-clad Australian died after a stingray's barb pierced his chest while filming in Queensland. The creature is not usually considered a killer; Irwin, 44, is only the third Australian known to have died this way. For decades, he had taken calculated risks with all sorts of wildlife, relying on his knowledge of animal behaviour and personal experience to beat the odds. But the man who became known as 'The Crocodile Hunter' – after his US TV show of the same name– was more than a showman. He was a passionate conservationist and wildlife advocate. It all began in Queensland where he was brought up. While his father Bob was officially a plumber, and his mother Lynn a maternity nurse, the family's consuming passion was rescuing local wildlife. In 1970 the hobby became a full-time job when the Irwins opened a reptile park. Young Steve came to share his parents' obsession with wild creatures, and soon displayed an uncanny rapport with them, able to sense their moods and preferences. Although he eventually claimed the title 'The Crocodile Hunter', Irwin's methods differed drastically to those of earlier hunters. Rather than ending up as handbags, the crocs bagged by Irwin were later released in a new home deeper in the wild, or at the Irwins' reptile park. In 2001, Irwin appeared in a cameo role in the Eddie Murphy film Dr Dolittle 2. This led to a featurefilm, The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course, and a string of documentaries, including The Crocodile Hunter Diaries. Within a few years, he was one of the most famous faces on US TV. Irwin was the type of man who would walk out of a Chinese restaurant if he spotted shark fin soup on the menu. He hated the idea of a threatened species being brought to the edge of extinction because it made a tasty appetiser. He recently agreed to appear on the Australian children's TV show The Wiggles, knowing that children's attitudes towards wildlife were essential to its future survival. "My husband has a unique ability to jump through the TV screen and into your lounge," his American wife, Terri, said recently. "He grabs you and drags you into the wild so you share his wonder and excitement.
PM Two Victorian cops are being investigated over their connection to a hot dog business. In NSW, they are into drugs and bashing Lebanese choccos. In WA they frame bikie gang members and the Mickleberg brothers. In QLD their former commissioner Terry Lewis presided over a systematically corrupt organisation. But here in Victoria, things are REALLY serious. Apparently, the Office of Police Integrity is investigating two cops for...wait for it...operating a hot dog stand! St Kilda senior sergeant Rick Lewis and Oakleigh detective sergeant David Brodie are believed to be involved in Shot Dogs, which operates vans outside some of Melbourne's most popular night spots. A Victoria Police spokeswoman confirmed that the ethical standards department was probing claims that Shot Dogs paid off-duty officers cash to sell hot dogs and marked police cars had been seen delivering bread rolls and other food to vans when supplies ran low. Hold the front page, folks. This is serous shit. Hot Dogs? What next? You'll have cops hanging curtains or cutting lawns on their days off if we're not careful! Migrant ‘plotted Saddam killings’ 22nd September 2006, 7:30 WST An Iraqi migrant living in Perth plotted the assassination of members of Saddam Hussein’s former regime in revenge for the regime murdering his brother and father, a court was told yesterday. State prosecutor Simon Stone told a District Court jury that Khairallah Al Bunajim, 42, helped organise the plot from his Maddington home in a series of telephone conversations with men in Iraq in July 2004. A team of three to five unknown men in Iraq was to assassinate at least three members of Saddam’s Ba’ath Party in Baghdad, Mr Stone said. Mr Stone said Mr Al Bunajim’s telephone conversations were being intercepted by Australian authorities and police arrested Mr Al Bunajim only hours after he helped finalise the assassination plot. Mr Stone was outlining the prosecution case on the opening day of Mr Al Bunajim’s trial on a charge of conspiracy to commit wilful murder. Mr Stone said Mr Al Bunajim and his family came to Australia as refugees in 1996 and were now Australian citizens. The family were living at Lancaster Place, Maddington, in July 2004 when State and Federal police officers in the joint counterterrorism team placed Mr Al Bunajim under surveillance and started intercepting his phone conversations. Mr Stone said 18 of the intercepted phone calls revealed that arrangements were made to buy a motor vehicle and rent firearms for use in the assassinations. Translations of some of Mr Al Bunajim’s intercepted telephone conversations, which were in Arabic, were read to the court yesterday. There were multiple mentions of pistols, cars, money and obtaining addresses. Judge Kevin Sleight instructed members of the jury to disregard any political prejudices they may have had. The trial continues.....

St. Louis named most dangerous U.S. city
By CHRISTOPHER LEONARD,
Associated Press Writer Mon Oct 30, 9:53 AM ET ST. LOUIS -
A surge in violence made St. Louis the most dangerous city in the
country, leading a trend of violent crimes rising much faster in the
Midwest than in the rest of nation, according to an annual list. The
city has long fared poorly in the rankings of the safest and most
dangerous American cities compiled by Morgan Quitno Press. Violent
crime surged nearly 20 percent in St. Louis from 2004 to last year,
when the rate of such crimes rose most dramatically in the Midwest,
according to FBI figures released in June. "It's just sad the way this
city is," resident Sam Dawson said. "On the news you hear killings,
someone's been shot." The ranking, being released Monday, came as the
city was still celebrating Friday's World Series victory at the new
Busch Stadium. St. Louis has been spending millions of dollars on urban
renewal even as the crime rate climbs. Mayor Francis Slay did not
return calls to his office seeking comment Sunday. Scott Morgan,
president of Morgan Quitno Press, a private research and publishing
company specializing in state and city reference books, said he was not
surprised to see St. Louis top the list, since it has been among the 10
most dangerous cities for years. The study looks at crime only within
St. Louis city limits, with a population of about 330,000, Morgan said.
It doesn't take into account the suburbs in St. Louis County, which has
roughly 980,000 residents. Visiting St. Louis on Thursday, FBI director
Robert Mueller said it was too early to tell why some types of crime
were rising faster in the Midwest. Mueller said the FBI is working
harder to form partnerships with police departments to launch programs
like St. Louis' Safe Streets task force, which focuses police efforts
on problematic neighborhoods. The safest city in 2005 was Brick, N.J.,
with a population about 78,000, followed by Amherst, N.Y., and Mission
Viejo, Calif. The second most dangerous city was Detroit, followed by
Flint, Mich., and Compton, Calif. The bad news for St. Louis was good
for Camden, N.J., which in 2005 was named the most dangerous city for
the second year in a row. Camden Mayor Gwendolyn Faison said Sunday she
was thrilled to learn that her city no longer topped the most-dangerous
list. "You made my day!" said Faison, who has served since 2000.
"There's a new hope and a new spirit." Cities are ranked based on more
than just their crime rate, Morgan said. Individual crimes such as rape
or burglary are measured separately, compared to national averages and
then compiled to give a city its ranking. Crimes are weighted based on
their level of danger. The national FBI figures released in June showed
the murder rate in St. Louis jumped 16 percent from 2004 to 2005,
compared with 4.8 percent nationally. The overall violent crime rate
increased nearly 20 percent, compared with 2.5 percent nationally.
While crime increased in all regions last year, the 5.7 percent rise in
the 12 Midwestern states was at least three times higher than any other
region, according to the FBI.
Online Christmas shoppers cost companies billions
Monday October 30, 07:38 AM
LONDON (Reuters) - Businesses could lose more than seven billion pounds
in the run-up to Christmas as employees waste company time browsing the
Internet for presents, employment experts said on Monday. Lured by
increasingly sophisticated Web sites designed to keep consumers online
for as long as possible, more than two million people took up Internet
shopping in the past 12 months, the Employment Law Advisory Services
(ELAS) said. It calculated the potential cost in lost company time by
estimating an average of half an hour a day spent shopping online at an
average hourly wage of 12.50 pounds. "For many employers, every hour a
member of staff spends looking for Christmas presents online is an hour
they should have spent working," said Peter Mooney of ELAS. ELAS'
prediction of nine billion pounds in Christmas Internet sales this year
chimes with other recent forecasts for booming online shopping. Hitwise
UK, a leading tracker of Internet trends, has already forecast record
Christmas online purchases as better delivery times and improved search
engines encourage shoppers to browse cyberspace rather than visit
crowded high streets. Industry body IMRG said in August UK Internet
sales outpaced total spending in shops by 10 times as traditional
retailers such as supermarket giant Tesco start to compete for Internet
business with online sites like Amazon. ELAS advised companies to lay
down rules for staff now to help limit the distraction of cyberspace's
seasonal offerings.
Turkish club's players and staff struck by lightning
ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Six
players and a member of the backroom staff at Turkish second division
leaders Alanyaspor were injured when they were struck by lightning at
the training ground on Tuesday. Two of the players were seriously hurt
and remained unconscious, general manager Mevluthan Cavusoglu told the
state-run Anatolian news agency. The team had been preparing for a
league match on Thursday against Mersin Idmanyurdu. Cavusoglu said
Alanyaspor may seek a postponement of the game. Alanyaspor are four
points clear at the top of the second division.
Productivity growth skids to standstill
WASHINGTON - Growth in productivity — the key ingredient for rising
living standards — skidded to a standstill in the late summer while
workers' wages and benefits shot up at the fastest clip in more than
two decades.
The
combination of slowing productivity and rising wages was seen as a
formula for inflation troubles down the road. It could keep the Federal
Reserve from cutting interest rates any time soon and possibly lead to
another increase. Productivity, the amount of output per hour of work,
showed no growth at all from July through September. Growth was just
1.3 percent over the past 12 months, the weakest showing in nine years.
The cost of wages and benefits measured by each unit of output grew at
an annual rate of 3.8 percent in the third quarter. Employee
compensation climbed by 5.3 percent over the past year. That gain
matched a 12-month increase ending in late 1990 and was the fastest
since a 5.8 percent rise in the 12 months ending in the fourth quarter
of 1982. Both the extent of the weakness in productivity and the size
of the increase in unit labor costs caught analysts by surprise. They
said the numbers were certain to raise concerns at the Fed about future
inflation risks. Higher wages and benefits are good news for workers.
But such increases can trigger inflation if companies pass on the
higher wage costs by making products more expensive. Rising
productivity allows companies to pay their workers more from the
increased production rather than having to finance the wage increases
through price increases. "If rising unit labor costs are passed on in
higher prices, that would mean stubbornly high inflation and no rate
cuts from the Fed," said Nigel Gault, a senior economist at Global
Insight. Companies could pay the higher salaries from their profit
margins, which have jumped in recent years, but that would mean less in
returns for shareholders. The weak economic news pushed stocks lower
for a fifth consecutive day, the longest stretch of declines since June
2005. The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 12.48 points to close at
12,018.54. Wall Street had hoped the slowing economy would translate
into Fed rate cuts, something put into doubt by the slowdown in
productivity and rising wage pressures. Investors were also concerned
about a mixed sales performance in October at major retailers. Many
shoppers apparently took a breather last month after a shopping spree
in September. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. reported a meager 0.5 percent rise
in same-store sales in October. The company said it would trim prices
to gain market-share in such areas as toys and electronics. Consumers
would benefit during the holiday shopping season but the move could
mean lower profit margins as other stores struggle to compete. In other
economic news, orders to U.S. factories for manufactured goods rose by
2.1 percent in September. While that was the biggest increase in six
months, it was heavily influenced by a huge surge in demand for
commercial aircraft. Outside of transportation products, factory orders
actually fell by 2.4 percent. The Fed raised interest rates 17
consecutive times through June of this year in an effort to slow the
economy enough to bring inflation pressures under control. The Fed has
left rates unchanged for three straight meetings, hoping it has done
enough to brake economic growth. But the significant slowing in
productivity growth and the continued rise in wage pressures could
prompt the Fed to resume raising interest rates to fight inflation,
analysts said. At the very least, it will mean a prolonged period
before the Fed feels safe in cutting rates. "The Fed will not be easing
anytime soon unless the economy absolutely falls apart," said Stephen
Stanley, chief economist at RBS Greenwich Capital. Since 1995, the U.S.
has enjoyed a decade of strong gains in productivity. But as the
economy has slowed this year, productivity has slowed, too, even as
unit labor costs have risen by rates of 3 percent or more in each of
the past five quarters. The 1.3 percent rise in productivity over the
past four quarters ending in September represented a significant
slowdown compared with rates averaging more than 3 percent annually
from 2002 through 2005. "Productivity is not growing fast enough to
keep labor costs from pressuring firms," said Joel Naroff, chief
economist at Naroff Economic Advisors. "The labor cost numbers raise
concerns that it may take quite a long time for inflation to settle
down and decline significantly."
Former Army private indicted
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A former
soldier in the 101st Airborne Division was indicted Thursday in the
rape and death of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and the slayings of three of
her relatives last March.
Former Army private Steven D. Green, 21, was charged with murder,
aggravated sexual assault and conspiracy, among other offenses, in the
federal indictment. If convicted, Green could face life in prison or
the death penalty, a Justice Department statement said. Green's defense
attorney, Patrick J. Bouldin, said that he hadn't seen the indictment
but that his client intends to plead not guilty and "firmly stands
behind that plea." The incident occurred March 12 in Mahmoudiya, Iraq,
a village about 20 miles south of Baghdad, where Green was stationed
with the division's 502nd Infantry Regiment. The indictment alleges
that Green and others raped the girl and burned her body to conceal
their crimes. The indictment also alleges that Green and four others
stationed at a checkpoint nearby killed her father, mother and
6-year-old sister. Green was discharged from the Army in May 2006 for a
"personality disorder," according to military investigators, and will
be tried in U.S. District Court. Green's lawyer said he is in custody
but would not reveal where. Nine soldiers from the 101st Airborne are
accused of wartime atrocities stemming from the division's yearlong
deployment, which ended in September.
Senators criticize IRS filing program
By JIM ABRAMS, Associated
Press Writer Thu Nov 2, 5:53 PM ET WASHINGTON - Leaders of the Senate
Finance Committee say a deal between the Internal Revenue Service and
private tax preparers that allows people to submit returns by computer
is too restrictive and discourages electronic filing.
Sens. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, and Max Baucus, D-Mont., said declines
in participation in the Free File program show it is not working. "If
the tax preparation industry cannot provide free basic filing services
without hidden costs and traps, perhaps it is time to consider having
the IRS provide a direct filing portal to enable all taxpayers to file
electronically without cost," they wrote IRS Commissioner Mark Everson
on Thursday. A recent report by an internal watchdog at the Treasury
Department noted that fewer people were using the program after
renegotiating of the contract between the IRS and the private industry
that went into effect in January. The IRS contends that report
misstated the intent of Free File, which was to help a limited number
of people with the most simple tax returns. The agency said a survey in
June showed "an overwhelming level of taxpayer satisfaction with this
program." A record 70 million taxpayer transmitted returns through a
computer this year, but only 3.8 million used the Free File program.
That compared with about 5 million the previous year, when some private
software companies offered their programs to everyone. The new contract
limited eligibility for free tax preparation software to 70 percent of
taxpayers, which covers people not earning more than $50,000. Grassley,
the committee chairman, and Baucus, the top Democrat, said
participating companies have used the Free File Web sites to market an
array of other products with little oversight from the IRS. They said
one site contained a link for taxpayers to purchase a tax preparation
franchise for $15,500. The senators noted that the Treasury inspector
general praised the new contract for extending the program to allow
Free File users to file for extensions. But they said companies are not
obligated to provide the extension form on their Web sites until April
1. But under a now-disbanded program, taxpayers had the option of
filing that form electronically to the IRS by telephone starting in
early February. Congress has been ambivalent about direct electronic
filing. Grassley's committee last June backed legislation making it
possible for individuals to file returns by computer without buying
commercial software or paying a professional preparer. But the House
objected to the IRS competing with private tax preparation software
companies. The House this year voted to prohibit the IRS from
developing or providing free electronic tax preparation outside the
Free File program.
TAXWATCH Before death do we part Tax errors in divorce agreements are costly:
Here's how to avoid them
By Eva Rosenberg, MarketWatch Last Update:
10:50 AM ET Sep 25, 2006 LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) --
Despite a divorce agreement that specifically said neither party shall
pay or receive alimony, one reader, Divorced in New York, was hit with
a $5,000 tax bill from the Internal Revenue Service for some phantom
alimony. Even though the IRS had a copy of the divorce agreement in
hand, the agency insisted on assessing the taxes. Why? Because this
woman's ex-husband presented canceled checks to prove he made payments
to her in the amount reported as alimony. The IRS didn't really care
that it wasn't alimony. What were the payments? They were her portion
of his monthly pension, as granted to her in the divorce.
Unfortunately, the state was sending the money to Divorced's
ex-husband, with the withholding already pulled out, and he was sending
to her half of the net. Then, on his tax return, the ex-husband was
deducting his full payment as alimony, and pocketing her share of the
refund. This problem could have been avoided if the attorney had set up
a QDRO, says Patricia Powell, a certified financial planner and chief
executive of The Powell Financial Group Inc., in Martinsville, N.J.
What's a QDRO? A qualified domestic relations order. Properly prepared,
it instructs the pension plan to issue a check directly to the ex-wife
for her share of the income. With a QDRO, an ex-spouse can decide
whether to get a lump sum rolled over to her IRA, cash it out and pay
taxes, or continue to get monthly payments. She can designate how much
she chooses to have withheld from her check. And, getting credit for
her full share of the withholding, if Divorced had reported the pension
income properly on her own tax return, she would have owed no tax. This
is a typical error when couples indulge in do-it-yourself divorces,
said Lynne Gold-Bikin, chair of the family law practice group at Wolf,
Block, Schorr and Solis-Cohen LLP in Norristown, Penn. Even seemingly
simple divorces are more complex than they appear. They involve
knowledge of both divorce law and tax law. Gold-Bikin says that if
you're not a tax-law expert, you should get one to review the divorce
agreement and settlement. If your divorce doesn't get a tax tune-up,
what kinds of errors are apt to occur? Here are some common problems.
Deceptive equality Often, assets appear to be evenly split based on
fair market value. Everything looks all nice and equitable, but one
person just got stuck with all the taxable assets, while the other
walked off tax-free, warns Powell. One of the biggest traps for women,
especially mothers, is that they often give up their right to
practically everything in order to keep the house and avoid moving
their children. Here are some tax rules to consider: Pensions, 401(k)s
and IRAs are taxed at ordinary income rates. With the high distribution
added to your other income, this can throw you into the top tax bracket
of 35%. Stocks and investments often get long-term capital gain
treatment - limited to 15%. The house looks like a good deal with that
$500,000 personal residence exclusion. But once your ex signs it over
to you, you've instantly lost half that cushion. If the appreciation on
your residence is substantially more than the $250,000 personal
exclusion, Powell advises you sell the house while you're still married
and can use the full $500,000 joint exclusion. Then, split the money
and buy your own home in the same neighborhood, which will now have a
higher tax basis (basis is the cost, for tax purposes). Note: In most
states, property tax keeps up with the increasing market value of the
home. In California, due to Proposition 13, property taxes are based on
the original purchase price. Before you do this in California, run the
numbers to see whether the increased annual property tax payments on
the new home might cost you more than the potential capital gains tax.
Cash is valued at face-value for tax purposes - there is no tax on
cash! How can you avoid the problem of "deceptive equality"? Powell
suggests you sell off the assets with the high tax values and split the
cash. Or if that's impractical, balance the split based on the tax
costs. Have your certified financial planner or tax professional review
the assets' tax bases to help you reach a truly equitable split. The
vanishing alimony trick Alimony recapture can be a common problem,
cautions Gold-Bikin. IRS Publication 504 explains what the recapture
is: "You are subject to the recapture rule in the third year if the
alimony you pay in the third year decreases by more than $15,000 from
the second year or the alimony you pay in the second and third years
decreases significantly from the alimony you pay in the first year."
Why is this recapture needed if the divorce agreement is properly
drafted? Gold-Bikin said this often happens when the alimony payments
aren't made on schedule. If several payments are missed in one year,
then made up in another year, it's easy to see that $15,000 swing take
place. Or if payments are stopped altogether and there haven't been
three years of regular alimony payments, that would also trigger the
recapture. Why does this matter? Because the person paying the alimony
will lose the deduction. And the person who received the money may go
back and file amended returns for all the alimony years - and get
refunds. Read that last sentence again if you're dealing with a
deadbeat former spouse. You may have a refund coming! How can you avoid
this problem? Gold-Bikin recommends you adhere to the alimony payment
schedule.
Royal trip axed over security fears
The Prince of Wales and the Duchess
of Cornwall have been forced to cancel a visit to the North West
Frontier Province of Pakistan due to fears over the royal couple's
safety. Islamic leaders have called for nationwide protests on Tuesday
after the Pakistani military carried out its deadliest operation yet
targeting suspected militants in the region. Missile-loaded helicopters
fired on a madrassa - an Islamic college - which is said to have been
used during recent weeks as a terrorist training camp. The strike on
the school in Chingai, a village in tribal region of Bajur in NWFP,
killed 80 people. Charles and Camilla were set to travel to the city of
Peshawar, which is the capital of the province, on Tuesday morning.
They were due to be shown around a moderate madrassa there, but the
Pakistani government advised their security teams to call off the day
outing because it was too dangerous. The Prince was said to be
extremely disappointed. The trip to the moderate
Markaz-ul-Uloom-ul-Islamia madrassa was viewed by aides as perhaps the
most important engagement of the tour. It was central to the message of
religious tolerance Charles is promoting. Madrassas in Pakistan, where
young Muslims go to learn more about their faith, are often seen as a
breeding ground for terrorists, but the Markaz-ul-Uloom-ul-Islamia is
progressive and incorporates English lessons into its curriculum. The
Prince and the Duchess are expected to stay in the capital Islamabad,
but it is not known what their movements will be.

Capello content after narrow win Thu 02 Nov, 12:00 PM Wednesday's
Champions League victory over Steaua Bucharest was mission accomplished
as far as Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello was concerned.Having beaten
Steaua 4-1 in Romania two weeks ago, Real were expected to cruise
through the return meeting at the Bernabeu and all-but guarantee their
spot in the next phase. Real did make it through to the knockout stages
- courtesy of their 1-0 win over Steaua and Lyon's victory over Dynamo
Kiev - but it was far from straightforward for the Spanish giants.
Steaua gave as good as they got in the Bernabeu and only a freak own
goal from Banel Nicolita 20 minutes from time allowed Real to claim the
win. For Capello though, that was enough. "We're happy to have
qualified for the next stage. We suffered until the very end because
Steaua have pressurised intensely, and they really hurt us, especially
in the first half," he said. "They came to play with three attacking
players. But the most important thing was going through." Real's win
saw them move to nine points from four games, three behind leaders Lyon
who have the only remaining 100 per cent record in the tournament after
Karim Benzema's early goal saw off Dynamo on Wednesday. Real and Lyon
clash at the Bernabeu in the next round of fixtures on November 21, and
that game could well decide which team finishes top of Group E. "The
match against Lyon is important because it's better to be first than
second," said Real midfielder Guti, who felt his side could have made
life easier for themselves against Steaua if they had made the most of
their chances. Ruud van Nistelrooy spurned a couple of opportunities -
including blazing a second-half penalty over - while Ivan Helguera
missed an open goal and Robinho wasted a breakaway with a poor
attempted pass. There were other opportunities as well, and Guti
believes his side are not the finished article just yet. "We had many
chances to score more goals (against Steaua), but we're satisfied with
the result and with having mathematically gone through," he added. "As
long as the team is winning, we have to line up the same starting XI.
Still, our game needs to improve and we need to maintain more ball
possession."
Celtic boss laughs off Beckham link
Monday October 30, 11:38 AM
Celtic manager Gordon Strachan has laughed off a report that he could
look to sign former England captain David Beckham. Beckham, who is in
the final year of his contract, has yet to put pen to paper to a new
deal with Real Madrid. And the 31-year-old midfielder is being linked
with a possible move to the Scottish Premier League champions, who
opened up a ten-point lead at the top of the table with a 2-1 win at
Kilmarnock. Beckham has said that he does not want to play in the
Premiership again and Strachan said: "I can see the scenario. Victoria
(Beckham), myself and Lesley (Strachan's wife) sitting in the Tunnock's
cafe in Uddingston (Lanarkshire). "I know the rhubarb tarts are great
but I don't know if it's enough to bring Becks and Victoria up here.
"What I said was that he is still a very good player and he can play
for five more years but I can't imagine it and none of you can. But
it's kept me on my toes this morning. And you wonder why I try to keep
myself to myself and don't speak off the record."
Do estate-tax reductions apply to foreigners living in the US?
By Steve Dinnen
Q: Under former estate-tax laws, foreigners living in the United States
didn't have the right to pass on large sums tax free to their spouse.
Congress assumed that surviving spouses would skip the country to
escape the tax bill. But does the new law that increased estate-tax
exemptions on assets passed on to nonspouse US citizens apply to
foreigners, too? R.F., Boston A: The rules regarding noncitizen spouses
have not changed, says Gary Altman, a certified financial planner in
Rockville, Md. The only thing the 2001 tax act did was increase the
amount that passes free of federal estate tax.
Every resident or citizen of this country has the right to pass that
amount (currently $2 million) free of estate taxes to anyone they want.
If a person has more than that, he or she can give what is leftover to
their spouse estate-tax free, because of the unlimited marital
deduction. But if that spouse is not a US citizen, the estate is
subject to tax on everything above $2 million, Mr. Altman says. So the
noncitizen spouse, in this case, is treated as not being a spouse.
Congress has allowed for a special form of trust, called a qualified
domestic trust, that will defer the estate tax on the assets over $2
million until the noncitizen spouse later dies, no matter where he or
she ends up living. Many individuals with noncitizen spouses are
confused about these rules, says Altman. That makes it very important
for people who live or own real estate in the US to plan their
financial affairs to avoid estate taxes. Q: How do you compare Treasury
Bills with TIPS and Series I Savings Bonds for earned interest, tax
treatment, and safety? J.F., via e-mail A: T-Bills, TIPS, and Series I
Bonds are all subject to federal taxes. But they're exempt from state
and local levies, says Doug Bender, managing director at McQueen, Ball
& Associates in Bethlehem, Pa. Earned interest may be calculated
differently for each type of security. All are guaranteed by Uncle Sam,
so safety is not an issue. As Mr. Bender explains, Treasury Bills are
short-term instruments (less than one year) that are issued at a
discount from maturity value. The difference between the purchase price
and the maturity value is your income. For example, a $1,000 face value
T-Bill purchased for $950 will generate $50 in interest if held to
maturity. T-Bills are very liquid, with yields that are comparable to
and sometimes superior to money-market rates. Treasury
Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) pay a rate of interest that's set
when they're sold. The interest is paid on the principal of the
security, which will vary with the rate of inflation. The principal is
adjusted monthly based upon changes to the Consumer Price Index for
Urban Consumers (CPI-U), as issued by the US Bureau of Labor
Statistics. As the principal is adjusted, interest payments may rise
with inflation or fall with deflation. The fixed rate of interest is
paid semi-annually and based upon the original principal or the
inflation-adjusted principal, whichever is greater. TIPS are issued at
regularly scheduled auctions in maturities of 5, 10, or 20 years and
are available in minimum denominations of $1,000. A longer-term
investment, TIPS are ideal for tax-deferred accounts or Roth IRAs,
Bender says. I-Bonds are sold at face value with a minimum investment
of just $25. Earned income is the combination of a rate that's fixed
for the life of the bond, plus a variable rate, which is based on
changes in the CPI-U and is adjusted semiannually. Interest on I-Bonds
may be earned for up to 30 years from their issue date, and it's paid
out when they're cashed in. But there's a one-year required holding
period, and if you redeem them within five years of issue, you forfeit
the most recent three months of interest. I-Bonds have
inflation-protection aspects similar to TIPS. You can buy no more than
$30,000 worth of them in any given year. Bender believes that I-Bonds
are well suited to smaller accounts. Their tax- deferral feature -
taxes need not be paid until they're cashed in - is attractive. But
their penalties for early withdrawal and lack of transferability makes
them inappropriate for investors who need flexibility. For more
information on all of these investments visit www.treasurydirect.gov.

Rolling Stones Fan
can't get no satisfaction
A Rolling Stones
fan is suing the band for $26m after they cancelled a concert in
Atlantic City. The October 27 gig was called off four hours before it
was scheduled to start because of Mick Jagger's ongoing throat
problems. Rosalie Druyan has started legal proceedings, accusing Jagger
and the rest of the band of fraud and acting in bad faith. She said it
cost her and thousands of fans money on non-refundable hotel bookings.
Her lawsuit says Jagger sought medical attention before the concert and
knew he would not perform but did not disclose it in time for
ticket-holders to cancel travel reservations. Ms Druyan bought a pair
of tickets on the internet for $575 (£300) and said she was not
notified about the cancellation until it was too late to cancel her
$300 (£157) hotel reservations. The band has rescheduled the concert
for November 17. Meanwhile, the Stones have cancelled an upcoming
concert in Hawaii so Jagger can rest his voice. The November 22 gig was
meant to end the second North American leg of the "Bigger Bang" world
tour. Other dates have been moved around to allow Jagger to recuperate
from his throat problems.
Orbiter to Look for Lost-To-Mars Probes Leonard
David Senior Space Writer SPACE.com Wed Nov 1,
8:45 AM ET A super-powerful camera orbiting Mars may help discover the
fate of long-lost spacecraft that never phoned home after reaching the
red planet.NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) is now circling
that puzzling world, equipped to assist in determining whether life
ever arose on the red planet and characterize its climate and geology,
as well as prepare for future expeditionary crews to land there. But
another sharp-shooting skill of MRO is catching sight of past
probes--craft that ran into trouble and died in the line of Mars duty.
That includes NASA's gone but not forgotten Mars Polar Lander and the
British-built Beagle 2. MRO is outfitted with an array of equipment,
including the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE)
camera--built to provide the most detailed view of Mars' surface to
date. From Mars orbit, MRO can take zoom-in images of objects on the
surface of the planet, checking out features that are about the size of
a small dining room table. Ugly ending NASA's Mars Polar Lander was
shot toward the red planet in January of 1999, only to be lost on
December 3 that same year as the probe neared its south pole
exploration target. What truly happened to the craft and its exact
whereabouts remain best guesses. An investigation of the loss concluded
that the most probable cause of the failure was due to the generation
of bogus signals when the craft's legs were deployed high above the
martian landscape. Those spurious signals are thought to have produced
a false indication that the spacecraft's outstretched legs had actually
reached Mars. That misread of its true altitude may have resulted in
Mars Polar Lander prematurely shutting down its set of descent engines.
Then, it is thought, the craft fell to an ugly ending within Mars'
south pole region. "We'll search for Mars Polar Lander when the
lighting conditions are good. Right now it's too dark down there," said
Alfred McEwen, Director of the Planetary Image Research Lab at the
University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. He is MRO's HiRISE principal
investigator. As for when the first opportunity to utilize HiRISE to
look for Mars Polar Lander, McEwen told SPACE.com that he hasn't
focused on a time frame as yet. "It's a matter of both illumination
angle and atmospheric conditions." Seasonal snows The Mars Polar Lander
site is on the edge of polar night right now, as Mars is not quite
half-way through its southern winter, explained Richard Zurek, MRO's
project scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena,
California. Zurek said that even when spring comes again to the
southern hemisphere on Mars--February 8, 2007--the seasonal snows made
largely of carbon dioxide ice will still cover the high southern
latitudes. These won't be gone from the area until the latter part of
May of next year, he added. "Right now, MRO is focusing on the high
northern latitudes, providing information for the Phoenix mission to
use in selecting their landing site," Zurek told SPACE.com. That will
be the main focus for MRO until the end of the calendar year, he said,
as Mars moves into late northern winter and observing conditions
deteriorate over the north polar area. NASA's Phoenix lander is to be
launched next year, the first in a series of Scout-class spacecraft. It
is also a resurrected Mars Polar Lander mission but this time headed
for Mars' water-ice-rich northern polar region. One busy bird Early
next year the focus will shift to looking at Mars Science Laboratory
(MSL) candidate sites, Zurek pointed out. MSL is a hefty wheeled rover
to be dispatched to the red planet in 2009. "MRO will look at a few of
those even before the end of the year, as southern spring and summer
are seasons when dust suspended in the atmosphere is more extensive and
opaque," Zurek continued. "Of course, unless there is a
planet-encircling storm this year, there will still be good seeing over
many areas, but local activity and regional storms introduce a more
random element and a more diffuse background haze. So, MRO will try to
get an early look in areas that are more prone to obscuring dust
activity." It's clear that MRO is going to be one busy bird as Mars
researchers hope to work through a list of roughly 50 or more Mars
Science Laboratory targets prior to a landing site workshop in October
2007. Other views Zurek said that scientists also hope to snag some
early views of the Viking Lander 2 site. That NASA spacecraft
successfully set down in Mars' Utopia Planitia in early September of
1976. Doing so will help calibrate interpretations of higher latitude
data being collected for the Phoenix lander mission, he said. "We also
hope to get back for a second view of Victoria Crater to pair with the
one just taken in order to produce a stereo image before lighting
conditions change too much," Zurek said. NASA's Opportunity Mars rover
has wheeled itself into position to begin studies of that large
feature. The space agency's other doing-just-fine Mars rover, Spirit,
is also a likely target - but one that is not as urgent as some of the
other MRO targets on the "to do" list, he observed. But first, MRO must
focus on the near-term needs of Phoenix and Mars Science Laboratory,
Zurek emphasized. "And second, we should not forget that MRO is
supposed to do more than look at places that we already know. It also
seeks new places that may prove to be even better destinations for
future missions and to test our present understanding with new data as
we explore more of the diverse planet that is Mars," he added. Beagle 2
wreckage or ? Similar to the Mars Polar Lander loss was the plight of a
British-built Beagle 2 probe. It was deployed from the European Space
Agency's Mars Express on December 19, 2003. Mars Express remains busy
at work as it orbits the planet. Beagle 2 was targeted to land in
Isidis Planitia via parachutes and airbags to cushion its touch down.
The probe was a science instrument-packed 152 pound (69 kilogram)
device that never uttered a peep from the surface of Mars. "Depending
on our success with Mars Polar Lander--and with landers with fairly
well-known locations--we will eventually try for Beagle 2, but that is
a much greater challenge due to its smaller size and the greater
uncertainty of its landing ellipse," Zurek said, noting that his
opinions are his own and do not represent the view or policy of JPL.
Indeed, it might be a stretch for MRO to spot Beagle 2 as it is only a
few feet wide. Late last year, Beagle 2 wreckage was thought found in
imagery relayed from NASA's Mars Global Surveyor - claimed by some to
show that the craft came close to success. But others in the Mars
photo-interpretation community contend that no incontrovertible
evidence exists in imagery to support Beagle 2 being discovered.
Resolution resolve "MRO may hopefully resolve what happened to Beagle
2," explained Mark Sims, the project's mission manager at the Space
Research Center's Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of
Leicester in the United Kingdom. MRO has enough resolution to perhaps
directly image the lander and certainly enough to image any debris or
components, like airbags, parachutes, etc. That is, assuming that such
gear is not covered by dust. Now nearly three years after Beagle 2's
landing, hardware dusted over may no longer be recognizable, Sims told
SPACE.com. "We understand that the HiRISE team intends to image the
Beagle 2 landing ellipse at some point in the mission," Sims said.
However, for obvious reasons, he added, doing so is not a high priority
for MRO, given top-of-the-checklist need to image sites for Phoenix,
Mars Science Laboratory, and other future missions. "We, however, look
forward to what MRO might detect as it would be good to ascertain how
close to a successful landing Beagle 2 came," Sims noted. Mineral
fingerprint Using MRO as a spotter scope for vanished Mars probes is on
the schedule. But the spacecraft also totes another "eye spy" device
for finding spacecraft gone astray. Along with HiRISE, MRO's Compact
Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) is now up and
operating too. It is able to identify minerals on the surface of Mars
and is one of six science instruments aboard MRO. CRISM investigations
are being led by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics
Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland. Spacecraft hard landings, like in the
case for Beagle 2, can churn up a rather large area of soil in the
process. CRISM might locate signs of different minerals in the upturned
crash spot that don't match those of the surrounding terrain. JPL's
Zurek said that this kind of CRISM data would be like having a mineral
fingerprint pointing to the spot where Beagle 2 plopped down. Images:

Hostels to friendly developers who are turning these historic heritage
Edinburgh hostels that were donated for the benefit of the youth as
affordable accomodation to promote Scotland. The developers expect to
make over £13 million pounds profit from each building by turning these
historic buildings into 30 flats and selling them for £1 million each.
The developers have paid about £2 million for each building which
should show them a net profit of about £25 million pounds. It is
believed is that the directors of the Scottish Youth Hostels
Association will receive a large payment from the developers for their
help in transfering these valuable properties to the developers at a

the USA Weekly News by founding members of the SYHA who were personal
friends of the late Walter Ballantyre who were asked to keep an eye on
the SYHA to make sure that the SYHA should be true to its basic purpose
of giving people of limited means the opportunity of enjoying the
Scottish countryside.
Walter R B Ballantyre who donated all the over 70 hostels in Scotland
to the Scottish Yourth Hostels Association, who gave more than fifty
years of distiguished voluntary service to the Scottish Youth Hostels
Association (SYHA) and who between 1935 and 1988, held successively,
the offices of Assistant Honorary Sedretary, Honoroary Secretary, Vive
Chairman, Chairman and Honorary President. And Chariman from 1958 to
1975 he exerted a wise and moderating influence upon the affairs of the
association and was always concerned that it should be true to its
basic purpose of giving people of limited means the opportunity of
enjoying the Scottish countryside.
In recognition of this service to his own Association and to the wider
international youth hostel movement, he was elected as Honary President
of the Scottish Youth Hostels Association (S.Y.H.A.) in 1975 and was
awarded the Richard Schirrmann Medal in 1978 and the Order of the
British Empire in 1982.
Now Walter Ballantyre has died in 1988, a new breed of directors with
completely different aims have emerged. Their names are Victor Hugh
Bourne- director appointed 23-10-06; Paul Goldfinch -director appointed
23-10-06; Judith Roxburg director appointed 23-10-06 and Margo Sarah
Paterson-secretary appointed 23-10-06.
It appears from interviewing staff and members that the aims of these
new directors is to turn the original company company known as the
Scottish Youth Hostels Association (SYHA) with over 70 vary valuable
freehold hostels through Scotland into a private company and form a new
company called the SYHA which is effectively a shell comany with no
assets for the public image. The original company wil hundreds and
millions in real estate assets which owns the over 70 Hostels would
then be a private company controlled by these greedy people who want to
take the use of these assets away from the member sand the wider
community and keep them for themselves. It appears that they have moved
a long way in carrying out these aims. They have on the 23-10--06
formed a new not for profit company called the Scottish Youth Hostels
Association. To do this it appears they lust have changed the name of
the old company from the SYHA to another name to make this name
available in the United Kingdom. It is impossible to have two companies
with the same name in the United Kingdom. So what happened to the
original SYHA that Watler Ballantyre formed, donated over 70 freehold
hostels to and proudly excerted a moderating influence over for many
years to make sure the SYHA would stay true to its basic purpose of
giving people of limited means the opportunity of enjoying the Scottish
countryside.

Madonna's new man
It seems one little motherless Malawian's got to get Into The Hollywood Groove pretty quickly: Madonna and Guy Richie are to be his new Mother and Father. The adoption's Causing A Commotion - plenty of people are Hung Up on the idea that one-year-old David Banda will be Little Boy Lost when he swaps his dilapidated orphanage for Madonna's mansion. But Malawian court officials say they'll be checking to see if the change proves to be Paradise or if Intervention is needed. "Madonna was granted an interim order to adopt the child, which means that there's going to be a subsequent hearing by the same court to either allow her to adopt the child or not. This also means that she has been put on observer status to see how she will relate to the child, and people from social welfare will have to observe that."
Mummy Madonna
There's new reports Madonna's adopting a baby boy from Malawi, with the father of a one-year-child saying she's officially adopted his son. "I am the father of David, who has been adopted. I am very very happy because as you can see there is poverty in this village and I know he will be very well looked after in America." Madge's reps had been dismissing the adoption speculation to justify the singer's visits to Malawi, but the latest talk has her spokeswoman saying a statement will be made in the next 48 hours.

The media organizations then used computers to sort and tabulate votes, based on varying scenarios that had been raised during the post-election scramble in Florida. Obesity linked to lack of childhood sleep
Rising levels of obesity may be linked to a lack of sleep in childhood, researchers have claimed. Children and adolescents are getting fewer hours of sleep than they used to and this affects the levels of hormones that control appetite and energy expenditure, the study found. Dr Shahrad Taheri from Bristol University blames shorter sleep periods among youngsters on increased use of televisions, mobile phones and computers. His research suggests that most TV viewing by children happens near bedtime, and can disrupt sleep. Writing in the Archives of Disease in Childhood from the British Medical Journal, Dr Taheri said that removing electronic gadgets from children's bedrooms could be part of a strategy to tackle obesity. "Sleep is probably not the only answer to the obesity pandemic, but its effect should be taken seriously, as even small changes in energy balance are beneficial," he said. "An obesity prevention approach in children and adolescents that promotes a healthy diet, physical activity and adequate sleep could be adopted. "Good sleep could be promoted by removing televisions and other electronic items from children's bedrooms and ensuring a strict, regular bedtime routine. "Ensuring adequate sleep in children and adolescents may not only help fighting against obesity, but could have other added health and educational benefits - for example improvements in academic performance."
Probe into £1 billion bank loan insurance blackmail-
Probe into £1 billion loan insurance blackmail-customers ‘forced into taking useless policies..
A Major Investigation of “rip off” insurance policies sold by banks and building societies was ordered today. The Office of Fair Trading said consumers are paying £1 billion a year too much for policies supposed to protect then if they fall ill, have an accident or lose their jobs-but which in reality are often completely useless. Lenders almost always try to sell the highly lucrative policies when customers take out a personal loan or a credit card, and in some cases, also when they arrange a mortgage. In many cases customers are effectively being blackmailed into policies because they are told they will not get a loan if they do not take out the insurance. Britain’s competition watchdog today launched its biggest ever investigation into the way banks and building societies “conned” billions out of customers for insurance. In one of the biggest single “scams” ever identified by the Office of Fair Trading it was revealed that customers are being “ripped off” to the tune of £1 billion a year by high street banks, credit card companies and insurers. The damning report has found has found millions are being sold unsuitable policies and mislead about how much they will cost. In many cases they are effectively being blackmailed into policies because they are told they will not get a loan without the insurance. Sales of the so-called payment protection insurance (PPI) has grown massively in recent years with seven million policies sold annually – business estimated to be worth around £5.5 billion. Today OFT chief executive John Fingleton said the evidence tit uncovered was so alarming that the industry had to be referred to the Competition Commission for a full investigation. He said, “Following the work we have undertaken it is clear that many consumers are failed by PPI- insurance which gives them a poor deal and often less protection than you think.” A review of PPI carried out by City watchdog the Financial Services Authority found three major areas of concern. They are: 1. Customers not being given clear information about how much the policies will really cost and not making it clear that they are optional. 2. Customers not being told that there are exceptions to the policies that mean they often will not be able to claim. Staff are not bothering to find out whether the policies are suitable for the customers. 3. Customers are often steered towards up-front single premiums because they are more profitable. Today’s OFT report highlights the enormous extra costs borrowers can be saddled with by taking out PPI. For example a £5,000 pound five-year loan advertised at 6.1 per cent APR had an actual interest rate of 22 per cent when PPI was added on.

OFT slams banks over debt cover
By Naomi Caine Have you got insurance to cover your loan payments? If so, it's probably no good. A damning report into the £5.5 billion market for payment protection cover by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has accused insurers of "failing consumers". The OFT now plans to refer the matter to the Competition Commission. Consumers are routinely sold payment protection insurance when they take out a loan or mortgage. The policies are supposed to cover your debt payments if you are ill and cannot work. There's nothing wrong with that, you might think. But you'd be wrong. The sale of payment protection insurance (PPI) is dominated by the big banks, which often foist the cover on customers when they are negotiating loans. Sales staff do not always make it clear that the cover is optional - or that you can buy it from another insurer. The hard sell is perhaps no surprise: sales staff can earn high rates of commission for pushing PPI. High cost of cover The dominance of the banks, plus the high commission rates, make PPI expensive. It can more than treble the interest rate on some loans. Norwich and Peterborough's loan rate, for example, jumps from 8.5% to 26%, according to figures from uSwitch, a comparison website. The higher interest rate bumps up the monthly payments on a £10,000 loan by £78. If that weren't bad enough, some companies automatically add the insurance premium onto the quote for the monthly debt repayments, making accurate costs comparisons difficult. Nick White, head of personal finance at uSwitch, says: "It's not surprising to see that the Competition Commission is now involved in this investigation as the high-street banks currently account for 80% of all PPI policies sold. Consumers are not shopping around and looking at the standalone policies that represent much better value for money." PPI might be expensive, but it is often riddled with exclusions. The claims ratio is estimated at 15% to 20% by the OFT. Compare that with a claims ratio of 74% on motor insurance and 55.2% on household insurance. Paula Houghton, personal finance campaigner at Which?, the consumer group, says: "Bad practice is rife in the PPI market. It is simply not delivering adequate protection for consumers. Policies are complex, often inappropriate and offer poor value." The Financial Services Authority (FSA), the regulator, has conducted its own review into PPI. It is the regulator's second probe into the industry. Last year, it warned companies to clean up their act or face tighter controls. But nothing much seems to have changed. Clive Briault, managing director of retail markets at the FSA, says: "Major weaknesses remain, which go to the heart of the culture surrounding PPI sales. Many firms are still not giving customers clear information. It is not being made clear that PPI is optional and customers are not getting full information about how much the insurance will cost. Customers are still not being made fully aware that there may be parts of the policy under which they cannot claim." The study identified particularly poor standards among firms such as motor dealers and retailers. The FSA has pledged to get tough on the worst offenders, and has threatened stricter regulation of the sale of PPI if the industry does not make improvements. Fears of mis-selling But there are already seven million policies in circulation, which could mean mis-selling on a grand scale. White says: "At best, the excessive cost of PPI for minimal benefits makes it bad value for money. At worst, mis-selling means the most vulnerable people are parted from large amounts of money under false pretences, and left more exposed to debt. This is particularly worrying at a time when personal debt has reached record levels, and continues to escalate." Campaigners want insurers to introduce summary boxes - as adopted by the credit card industry - to ensure that all costs are clear to the consumer and they can make proper comparisons between policies. They would also like to see a ban on the inclusion of PPI in loan quotes, to stop high pressure and unfair sales tactics. However, a clampdown on PPI could signal the end of low loan rates. White says: "The high price of PPI is clearly subsidising the low loan rates on offer. I would not be surprised to find that the knock-on effect of a clampdown on the dubious selling practices and high pricing surrounding PPI policies will result in a steady increase in interest rates." Top tips It could be many months before any changes are introduced by the Competition Commission. In the meantime, consumers should follow some basic tips. • Remember that PPI is almost always optional - you should not be refused credit if you decide not to buy it. • Do you really need insurance? You might already have some cover or savings to tide you over in case of illness or unemployment. • Make sure you are clear about any exclusions. • Check what you will get back if you cancel the policy or repay the loan early. • You don't have to take out PPI with your lender - shop around to compare benefits and prices. Andrew Hagger of Moneyfacts says: "Companies such as Paymentcare and British Insurance offer similar cover to mainstream lenders at a much reduced cost to the customer, without charging interest on top, or hitting them further in the pocket with poor value rebates on cancellation."
The Rev. Ted Haggard,
Key Evangelical quits
amid gay sex claim
By CATHERINE TSAI, Associated Press Writer COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
The leader of the 30 million-member National Association of Evangelicals, a vocal opponent of same-sex marriage, resigned Thursday after being accused of paying for sex with a man in monthly trysts over the past three years The Rev. Ted Haggard, a married father of five who has been called one of the most influential evangelical Christians in the nation, denied the allegations. His accuser refused to share voice mails that he said backed up his claim. Haggard also stepped aside as head of his 14,000-member New Life Church while a church panel investigates, saying he could "not continue to minister under the cloud created by the accusations." "I am voluntarily stepping aside from leadership so that the overseer process can be allowed to proceed with integrity," Haggard said in a written statement. "I hope to be able to discuss this matter in more detail at a later date." He also told KUSA-TV late Wednesday: "Never had a gay relationship with anybody, and I'm steady with my wife, I'm faithful to my wife." The allegations come as voters in Colorado and seven other states get ready to decide Tuesday on amendments banning gay marriage. Besides the proposed ban on the Colorado ballot, a separate measure would establish the legality of domestic partnerships providing same-sex couples with many of the rights of married couples. Mike Jones, 49, of Denver told The Associated Press he decided to go public with his allegations because of the political fight. Jones, who said he is gay, said he was upset when he discovered Haggard and the New Life Church had publicly opposed same-sex marriage. "It made me angry that here's someone preaching about gay marriage and going behind the scenes having gay sex," said Jones, who added that he isn't working for any political group. Jones, whose allegations were first aired on KHOW-AM radio in Denver, claimed Haggard paid him to have sex nearly every month over three years. Jones also said Haggard snorted methamphetamine before their sexual encounters to heighten his experience. Haggard and his attorney, Martin Nussbaum, did not return calls Thursday night from the AP. Jones said that he had advertised himself as an escort on the Internet and that a man who called himself Art contacted him. Jones said he later saw the man on television identified as Haggard. He said that he last had sex with Haggard in August and that he did not warn him before making his allegations this week. Jones said he has voice mail messages from Haggard, as well as an envelope he said Haggard used to mail him cash, though he declined to make any of it available to the AP. "There's some stuff on there (the voice mails) that's pretty damning," he said. Haggard, who is about 50, was appointed president of the evangelicals association in March 2003. He has participated in conservative Christian leaders' conference calls with White House staffers and lobbied members of Congress last year on U.S. Supreme Court appointees after Sandra Day O'Connor announced her retirement. After Massachusetts legalized gay marriage in 2004, Haggard and others began organizing state-by-state opposition. Last year, Haggard and officials from the nearby Christian ministry Focus on the Family announced plans to push Colorado's gay marriage ban for the 2006 ballot. At the time, Haggard said that he believed marriage is a union between a man and woman rooted in centuries of tradition, and that research shows it's the best family unit for children. "Homosexual activity, like adulterous relationships, is clearly condemned in the Scriptures," the evangelicals association says on its Web site. The Bible says homosexuality is a sin that "brings grave consequences in this life and excludes one from the Kingdom of God." Haggard's resignation from the NAE seems unlikely to do lasting damage to the organization, an umbrella group for a diverse and independent-minded membership. At his own church, Haggard's decision to step aside — if it became permanent — would have a more profound effect. "One would hope and pray that this matter would be resolved expeditiously and quickly and he can be restored back to being the pastor of the church and the leader of the NAE," said Michael Cromartie, vice president of the Ethics and Public Policy Center, a conservative Washington think tank. New Life Church member Brooks DeMio, 44, said he thinks Jones is a liar and can't believe Haggard would engage in sex with a man. "He loves the Lord, homosexuality is a sin and that's not Ted," DeMio said. "His desire is to serve other people and uphold the word of God. ... I don't know him well enough to give a complete character description, but I know him enough to know it's not true." Carolyn Haggard, spokeswoman for the New Life Church and the pastor's niece, said a four-member church panel will investigate the allegations. The board has the authority to discipline Haggard, including removing him from ministry work. "This is really routine when any sort of situation like this arises, so we're prepared," Carolyn Haggard said. "The church is going to continue to serve and be welcoming to our community. That's a priority."
Bindi steps up By Elaine Ford.

Bindi Irwin left her cherished Australia Zoo for a spell to honour a promise her dad Steve made to present the top award at the Nickelodeon Australian Kids' Choice Awards in Sydney. The Crocodile Hunter's eight-year-old daughter and her mum, Terri, stuck close together in their first night out since her tribute at her dad's memorial service two weeks ago. Bindi got to present the "Fave Aussie" award to singer Guy Sebastian. "I am the smallest presenter, but I get to give the biggest award." A smiling Terri says it was good to have a focus on the special night and that Bindi's appearance would've made her dad proud. "Bindi's been looking forward to this for a long time, so we're really glad to be here."
Irwin's death will never air, says wife
Wed Sep 27, 2006 3:49 PM BST
By Michelle Nichols NEW YORK (Reuters) - Footage of "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin's death will never be shown on television, his wife said in her first interview since the exuberant naturalist was killed by the serrated barb of a stingray's tail. Asked in an interview with the ABC News program "20/20" whether the footage of Irwin's September 4 death would ever be aired on television, Terri Irwin was blunt and emphatic. "It won't be. No. No. What purpose would that serve,' she said, adding that she had not looked at the footage of her husband's death. That footage shows Irwin swimming above a stingray, while filming a documentary off Australia's northeast coast, when it lashed out and speared him in the heart with its barbed tail, according to Irwin's manager, John Stainton, who said Irwin pulled the barb from his chest before losing consciousness. U.S.-born Terri Irwin said her 44-year-old husband knew he would not live a long life. "He'd talk about it often. But it wasn't because of any danger from wildlife. That was never a consideration. He just felt life could be dangerous," she said in the interview, to be broadcast in the United States on Wednesday evening. Irwin's family and friends held a private funeral at his beloved Australia Zoo -- where he was also buried. A public televised memorial service was held at the zoo's "Crocoseum" last Wednesday. His 46 "Crocodile Hunter" documentaries were watched by 200 million people around the world and his death prompted an international outpouring of grief.
Stars and ordinary Australians farewell Irwin Wed Sep 20, 2006 1:46
BEERWAH, Australia (Reuters) - A khaki-clad choir, Hollywood stars and thousands of ordinary Australians bid farewell to "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin at a memorial service for the TV naturalist at his "Crocoseum" on Wednesday. The service, broadcast live around Australia as well as across Asia and the United States, brought the nation to a standstill 16 days after Irwin was killed when the serrated barb from a stingray's tail pierced his heart. "Please don't grieve for Steve. He's at peace now, but I'd like you to grieve for the animals, for the animals have lost the best friend they ever had, and so have I," Irwin's father Bob told the service. A koala slumbered in a gum tree next to the stage and Irwin's tearful U.S.-born wife Terri held their young son Robert in her lap as Irwin's family said their public goodbye. "My daddy was my hero, he was always there for me when I needed him," Irwin's eight-year-old daughter said after walking onto the "Crocoseum" stage to a standing ovation. "We filmed together, caught crocodiles together and loved being in the bush together. I want to help endangered wildlife just like he did," she said, her finger running over the words as she read her farewell. A crowd of about 5,000 people at the "Crocoseum" in Irwin's beloved Australia Zoo in tropical Queensland state were entertained by popular Australian children's group The Wiggles in a largely upbeat service. Australian folk singer John Williamson led fans and a khaki-clad choir of Australia Zoo workers in a rousing rendition some of Irwin's favourite songs, including "True Blue" and "Give Me a Home Beneath the Gum Trees". Taped video tributes were played from Irwin's Oscar-winning actor friend Russell Crowe, Hollywood stars Kevin Costner and Cameron Diaz, talk show host Larry King and U.S. singer Justin Timberlake. Prime Minister John Howard said Irwin touched the hearts of millions around the world, while Crowe said in a taped message from New York that Irwin's death "was completely unfair". "We've all lost a friend, we've lost a champion," Crowe said. In a final tribute, Australia Zoo staff spelled out Irwin's catchphrase "Crikey" in yellow flowers as Irwin's truck was driven from the "Crocoseum" for the last time to end the service.
