AKRON, Ohio -- LeBron James' 35,440-square-foot house under construction in nearby Bath Township is shaping up as a castle fit for a king -- with a theater, bowling alley, casino and barber shop.
The house in a suburban location 20 miles south of Cleveland is due to be finished next year. It is being built on 5.6 acres of land purchased, along with an 11-bedroom house, in 2003 for $2.1 million. The Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star and Akron native, whose stated goal is to be the world's first billionaire athlete, razed the house to clear the way for the new one.
A first-floor master suite, which includes a two-story walk-in closet, will be about 40 feet wide and 56 feet long -- bigger than half the houses in Bath Township.
The house has a dining hall, roughly 27 feet by 27 feet, a "great room" at 34 feet by 37 feet and a bigger, two-story "grand room," according to the Akron Beacon Journal, which reported on the blueprints.
The "family foyer" off the six-car garage near the elevator will be dwarfed by a "grand foyer" inside the front entrance with a sweeping, divided staircase leading to four second-story bedrooms. An outer wall will feature a limestone sculpture -- a bas-relief of LeBron's head, wearing his trademark headband.
The property is an oddly shaped tract wedged among lots that average 2.3 acres and houses that average 3,209 square feet. His property is 300 feet wide at the street and 677 feet deep.
The house already has begun to draw the curious.
"People who come to photograph it are disrespectful," said Tom Bader, one of nine immediate next-door neighbors. "They park their car in the middle of the street -- with their doors open! And you're sitting behind them! All I wanna do is go home after a hard day's work."
Sometimes Bader must wait to turn into his driveway because gawkers have driven up, hoping for a better view of James' place.
"As far as LeBron the man goes, I think he's an outstanding individual," said Bader, a graduate of James' alma mater, St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron.
"He's great for Cleveland. I'm proud to have him. I have no issues with LeBron James at all. The problem is the baggage that he unintentionally carries with him."
Bader has discouraged his children's dream that James might have them over to shoot hoops.
"I said, `Honey, I don't think that's going to happen. Besides that, don't ever, ever invite LeBron over to our house to play ball because he's going to twist his ankle and I will have my house eternally egged.'"
While waiting for the home to be finished, James splits his time between a huge apartment in downtown Cleveland and a relatively modest four-bedroom house in Medina County west of Akron. He paid $580,000 for the house in 2005.
LONDON (Reuters) - Powerful motorcycles could have their top speed capped to try to cut the number of riders killed in accidents, an influential group of MPs said on Thursday. Electronic speed limiters, already fitted on some scooters and high-performance bikes, could be required by law if the government adopts the committee's ideas. "Motorcycle accident rates are far too high. They have been for 10 years," the House of Commons' Transport Committee said in a report. "It is time to consider radical action to tackle this problem." Many "superbikes" with large engines have devices that restrict top speeds to 186 mph (300 kph). The committee did not suggest a top speed limit. A total of 569 motorcyclists were killed and nearly 6,000 seriously injured in accidents on Britain's roads in 2005, according to Department for Transport figures. Giving evidence to the committee, transport author Stephen Plowden said he could not see why anyone needed a bike with a top speed of more than 65 mph. However, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) said it would be difficult to use the law to limit the power of motorcycles. "I have a lot of sympathy with having a top limit on the speed and power of motorcycles and cars," said Kevin Clinton, RoSPA's head of road safety. "Although when the EC ... proposed a 100 brake-horsepower limit on motorcycles, they were not able to get it through because they could not show any real reduction in risk from that." The committee said the government should commission research on speed limiters to "stimulate a sensible debate" on the issue. "A case was made to the committee for limiting the speed of the more powerful motorcycles, though some technical issues still need to be resolved," the committee said. The committee said it appeared to be government policy to encourage greater use of motorcycles, despite concerns over safety and the environmental damage. "This may be another argument in favour of reducing the maximum power and speed that is available on these vehicles," the committee reported. The Motor Cycle Industry Association says road safety can be improved by better training, changing attitudes and improving roads rather than just focussing on speed. Technology that interferes with a rider's control could be dangerous, it says. The Department for Transport had no immediate comment.
Father-of-three Andy Jackson has suffered the indignity of becoming the first person to be kicked off the new series of The Apprentice - but says he had no regrets. The former car salesman, 36, was booted off after taking on the role of team leader in a coffee-making task, and his team, Stealth, got knocked out by their rivals. Jackson, from Leeds but now living in Kirriemuir, Scotland, and the oldest of the 16 candidates, lasted on the BBC1 show for just a week. The married father of Adam, eight, Harry, five, and Sam, four, said: "I need to look after my kids. But this has been a stepping stone. "I lost wages and time. Going on the show cost me around £10,000 in wages and I now have to find another job. I am trying to find ways of paying the mortgage at the moment. "But I had to take the risk. I was always a gambling man and if I was in the final 16 of a poker game from 10,000 people I would be a fool not to continue." He said of the moment he was told "You're Fired" by Amstrad boss Sir Alan. "I hated it. But I've had knockbacks in my life and it's about how you pick yourself up and that's what I'm doing. Unfortunately the project manager always gets fired on the first week. "But I'd rather I went because of my own doing - and it was my own doing because I was the project manager - rather than stand back and not manage." Mr Jackson tipped Katie Hopkins, 31, a global brand consultant and single mother from Exeter to win.

SEOU, South Korea -
North Koreasaid it reached an agreement with the U.S. during talks this week on its nuclear program, and the top U.S. nuclear envoy expressed optimism Friday that progress could be made when wider arms negotiations reconvene.
SEOUL, South Korea - North Korea said it reached an agreement with the U.S. during talks this week on its nuclear program, and the top U.S. nuclear envoyexpressed optimism Friday that progress could be made when wider arms negotiations reconvene. ADVERTISEMENT North Korea's Foreign Ministry said three days of talks in Berlin between U.S. envoy Christopher Hill and North Korea's main nuclear negotiator Kim Kye Gwan had been held "in a positive and sincere atmosphere and a certain agreement was reached there." No further details were given. Washington, however, played down talk of an agreement. "I think it's premature to say there is an agreement — premature to say the least," deputy White House press secretary Dana Perino said Friday. Hill said the talks laid the foundation for progress when six-nation nuclear negotiations resume and that he had agreed with his North Korean counterpart "on a number of issues." He declined to elaborate. "I am pretty convinced that we have the basis for a good session of the six-party talks," Hill told reporters in Seoul after meeting South Korean Foreign Minister Song Min-soon and nuclear envoy Chun Yung-woo. The last round of six-nation talks in Beijing in December — two months after the North conducted its first-ever nuclear test in October — ended without any breakthroughs. The negotiating countries, which include South Korea, the U.S., Japan, China and Russia, had been seeking to outline how to implement a September 2005 agreement in which the North pledged to disarm in exchange for aid and security guarantees. But North Korea refused to discuss its arms program and again demanded the U.S. lift its blacklisting of a Macau bank. The U.S. had accused the bank of being complicit in the communist country's alleged counterfeiting and money laundering, leading the bank to freeze North Korean assets worth about $24 million. The North did not directly mention the financial dispute in its statement Friday, but said progress was made in overcoming obstacles to the six-nation talks. "We paid attention to the direct dialogue held by the (North) and the U.S. in a bid to settle knotty problems in resolving the nuclear issue," the North's ministry said in the statement, released by the country's official Korean Central News Agency. A South Korean news report said the six-nation arms talks could resume early next month due to progress made at the Germany meetings. Yonhap news agency, citing an unnamed diplomat in Seoul, said Thursday there is a high possibility the talks would resume in Beijing the week of Feb. 5. On arriving in Seoul earlier Friday, Hill said he hoped six-nation talks would be held again before the Lunar New Year holiday celebrated across Asia that falls this year on Feb. 18. "It's up to the Chinese (hosts) but I would think we'll have a six-party meeting pretty soon," he said. The U.S. is holding separate negotiations with North Korea on the financial dispute, but the last session that was held alongside the nuclear talks in December made no progress.
